Nice rooms , clean and a great view. The owner, Podi , is a great host and our stay here was awesome! We will be back! We recommend the green hill for those who appreciate a calm environment where birds sing and people smile….

We stayed here for 2 nights, it was a little bit of a walk down to the town but ask about the short cut (its a nice walk anyway and quieter), a bit hard to find. The prices have changed since the lonely planet, we were quoted a price by email but then when we checked in it was a higher price, he apologised and we payed the original price (honest mistake I do believe!) - Podi is a very nice guy and the staff are friendly as well. The food is very good, the wifi on/off a lot, good bathroom but hot water ran out after a short time. The cottage looks nice but was too expensive for us. The view alone is a great reason to stay here.

Room Tip: Not sure if the cottage is value for money at current price

First, all of you Lonely Planet users, just forget the rates quoted in the guide. It just isn't so. The views are superb, though, with Little Adams Peak, Ella Rock, and a waterfall, the valley opening up in front of you as you sip your morning tea. To get to the guesthouse, you have to negotiate a muddy track after the tuk tuk drops you off, which would be very difficult if you had large luggage. We had booked an "old" room over the phone for Rs4500 a night, breakfast included. There are "old rooms", and "new rooms", the newer "family" room being more expensive. When we arrived in the late afternoon, the owner tried to up-sell us to a new room because the one we had booked was not ready. At US$60, but he would give it to us for US$45. Umm, no thanks, we'll just wait for our room to get ready. He was dismayed, and virtually insisted that we take the "new" room at the discounted rate, which was higher than what we had reserved. I did not want to pay more than the price we agreed on over the phone, and it didn't matter to me which room it was. He was visibly disappointed, and the whole exchange was odd.

Other notes:

Rice and curry dinner was very good, but also very expensive. There is no view after dark, so you may want to just stroll into town, there is plenty to choose from.

The hot showers never got warmer than barely warm.

Breakfast was really nice, a hot dish and fruit, with the wonderful view.

Bring your own beer if you will want some, they do not serve it any longer.

There is construction debris all over the place, and it does detract a bit from enjoying the view.

Surprisingly, there is serious traffic noise from the road going through the valley.

When we paid our bill after our two night stay, strangely, the owner did not have change to give us. It was not a huge amount of change owed us, but it just added to the feeling of money sleaziness that you may need to deal with if you stay at Green Hill. On my next visit to Ella, I will stay elsewhere.

Room Tip: "new" rooms have a terrace just outside the door, "old" rooms have the terrace a...

While not really a cheap place, Green Hill has one of the most amazing views over the Ella valley ever. The owner is a nice guy who has also driven us to the south. A great place to be situated while exploring Ella and surroundings.

A little hard to reach, but it is definitely worth the 5 min hike along the trails from the main road in Ella. The view on Ella's rock from the spacious terrace is something you will remember.
Rooms are simple, clean and very quiet, and the breakfast was delicious.
Hikes to Ella's rock can be arranged with a guide (2hrs) while the Little Adam's peak is just 45 mins away (no guide needed).
100% recommended.

Great place to take in the views of Ella gap. Had dinner there the first nite. Was great. Excellent rice n curry. Close to little Adams peak. A little bit of a walk to the hotel from the road. Car cannot get to the door. Staff helped with luggage. Spent Xmas nite hanging with the owner and his friends and shared some drinks before we went out for dinner. Would definitely stay here again.

The comfortable terrace on Green Hill hotel offers world class view over the green mountains and valleys of Ella. It's unforgettable beauty the same way as the Lord of The Rings movies shot in New Zealand. The owner is a nice and cool fellow who can help with anything. The rooms are quite basic - and you pay double up compared to the hotels downtown Ella. The food is pretty good, but not as good as the best restaurants anywhere else - and still, the prices are almost twice as high as the other places. PS. Green Hill is the only hotel in Sri Lanka so far that doesn't have a free soap on the bathroom ... Greed?
