“Private tour on a quiet Sunday”

Kinellan Tea Factory
Reviewed 22 February 2014

Fascinating tour when the plantation was technically closed which actually made it more special. It was so interesting to see how tea goes from the leaf and ends up in our cup. At the end walked up to the shed and had a lovely cup of tea with the man who showed us around! Delightful...

the tour cost 350 and it lasts 5 minutes! The man was in a terrible rush, we thought he had to take a sxxt at the toilet! He spoke a bad english and he didn't know how to answer to our question.. just repeating the same Sri- english words. really doesn't worth the money! Never go on Monday because he said that the leaf had still to come.. Maybe if we had warned before starting the tour we would have not gone... we were offered a cup of the at the end but we were still pissed off about the tour and we didn't enjoy that much!

This tea factory was fabulous! Our tuk tuk driver in Ella didn't think it was open to the public but our guesthouse had advised us to go there so we asked him to drive us anyway. Kinellan was open and they gave us a private tour where we interacted with the staff, took photographs and enjoyed a delicious cup of their tea in the gardens. We were then able to purchase the tea which was great. Our driver waited for us and was very patient, he had quoted us 200 rupees but we gave him 300 for his patience and time. This tea factory is a must-see in Ella.

First of all the price is now 350 rs. "Tour" takes less than 10 minutes and they were unable to answer any questions. No free cup of tea at the end. Any other tea factory is better; this is a rip off.

We arrived mid afternoon and I guess the guides were off duty. We were therefore taken around by the manager (I guess) who was fine but he hurried us at all stages through the tour of the factory and the processes. We got to see inside on 2 levels and saw the ladies working away - and he showed us some sign boards explaining the types of tea. So no complaints but he did rush us throughout. We were able to take pictures (as long as we didn't dawdle which had him saying "come on, come on")
I was surprised with tea ready for packing on the floor of the factory that we did not have to take our shoes off, as we were walking on the same surface as the tea. That seemed to lack hygiene as we had walked in off the road.
But overall I gained a decent idea of the processes that the leaf goes through and we also had a 'free' cup of tea thrown in with the entry price.
So I have given a 'very good' rating. it was certainly better than 'average' which is the next mark down.
