“ella jungle inn”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 March 2014

we came across the Ella jungle inn by chance and it turned out to be a nice surprise. The room was beautiful with a fantastic view. The shower room is made from rock and the shower is warm and powerful. The food is moderate but you get a lot for your money. We had breakfast on our balcony which was wonderful watching the sunrise. Some of the staff struggle with english but will do anything to help and make your stay comfortable.

Room Tip: Ask to see all available rooms as we got an upgrade for free as they were not full.

Amazing experience in the sri lanka jungle.
Our house was a little bit to close from the road, but if the noise is not a problem for you, it's just incredible. And we were very well served, with a delicious meal and the breakfast was great.
The team of the hotel is just nice !

Room Tip: Better to choose the room in the forest, but there are for 2 or 3 max.

Beautiful place in the middle of the Jungle. Ca. 20min away from Ella by Bus or Tuk Tuk. We had a beautiful view over the jungle including sunrise (depends on the bungalow). Lot of animals in and around the Bungalow. Monkeys making noise all night long (jumping on our bungalow).Poor and slow service. Bad management, no travel information. Food was ok, but no choice of menu.
In case of better management and service this would lead to a wonderful place.

Room Tip: Ask for the bungalow with the view over the jungle.

Firstly I can recommend all travelers to be careful about location of chalets. When we arrive to hotel they accommodate us to nice modern one but close to main road where is horrible noise. After asking to change it they send to us for one night to old one chalet where live many animals with us (mice, cockroach, etc). This chalet was very old styled and was possible to see that not so many travelers stayed there. Next day we asked to change this chalet ones again. Finally we receive beautiful two stored chalet which you can see in pictures on booking.com web page. Second issue we had with quality of food which ordered in hotel restaurant. In summary my feeling from this hotel is that in past this could be magnificent hotel with great atmosphere but in recent time is far away to expected standard a there is no value for your money. I can't recommend it because I was able to see in Sri Lanka better hotels for the same money.

I stayed here with my daughter for two nights. Our room was amazing with a fantastic view over the forest, but as you are staying alongside nature it is natural that you will get unwanted visits in the night. It was unfortunate that there was a power line down nearby and no electricity all one night so they ran an extremely noisy generator all night which meant a very sleepless night. The breakfast was tasty but very unorganised. Ella jungle is a long way out of Ella but It is not necessary to take a tuk tuk into town as there is a very good bus service .

Room opened in the middle of the jungle so you have all the insects and animals with you, wind too, and service is not existing. I had to cause a scandal just to have a blanket cause nobody cared .... Incredible ! Very far from the village center and nobody will tell you how to go there, or what to do in Ella. I don't speak about food and breakfist which are just horrible.

It's a pity because this village is very beautiful !

The building is beautiful which only goes to raise your expectations and make the reality more sharp.

We stayed in the family room in late december 2013. The greeting was warm, perfect English spoken by the lady owner and it is a stunning development... but it all went down hill from there.

The family room is right next to a busy main road which means the open to elements approach is not appropriate - any jungle or animal noises are obliterated by traffic noise. The buses and lorries struggling up the hill outside meant sleep was neigh on impossible until late at night and we were woken at 5am. The outside space is unusable as a result - i bet no one as sat on the nice teak chairs for more than a minute!

After stripping off to brave the elements for a shower I was also annoyed to find the bolier was broken so got dressed again and walk across the busy road to get someone to fix it. they did do that pretty quickly thankfully but you wait ages for the water to heat up and then there's only enough hot water for one shower at a time...in a family room that's surprising.

You have to cross the main road to go to reception and the restaurant. The restaurant is the worst bit of all yet promised so much. Dining next to the frantic main road in an open plan restaurant doesn't work - why didn't they build just one wall to block out the traffic noise? The restaurant is stunning to look at, contemporary fittings with a cathedral like air and very 'now' but the food and service provided warrants only a crude shack by the roadside. We arrived mid washing of the floor at 7.30 and the furniture was all over the place - good it's clean but not at prime eating time! We were the only ones in there for the first 40 minutes yet it took over 25 mins to take our order (when we literally went to reception to ask for someone), there's very little on offer to drink, the beer arrived warm and they thought that was fine. Strange! The food was slightly warmer than the beer. Our daughter's macaroni cheese was pasta with a single slices of processed semi melted cheese on top. Our local chicken curry was small, warm at best and bony - probably the worst we had during three weeks in Sri Lanka. The rice was enormous but lukewarm (despite being the first served that evening although we did leave with our stomachs in tact). Glasses and place mats were dirty. Service was shockingly slow and they just didn't get what a restaurant is meant to provide. At one point i seriously considered just getting up and cooking it myself and wondered if that was supposed to happen. Four of the staff carried on a loud conversation right next to our table yet none thought to serve us.

To top it all it took them 30 minutes to work out our bill at the end of the evening and we only had six things.

It's beauty promised so much but that just meant the fall was all the greater. it's not cheap and there are far better cheaper places up the hill in Ella where you can walk to some really rather good restaurants. We were told the whole place was refurbished less than a year ago and we wonder if it changed its name for good reason!

Avoid!
