We stayed at La Fauvelle en route for Barcelona, choosing it for its proximity to the autoroute, interesting website and good reviews. We weren't disappointed at all. The rooms are spacious and not fussy; the beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are wonderful - everything works well. After a long drive the hotel fwas relaxing and delightful. We fell asleep to the sound of the stream which used to power the machinery of the former factory. We woke to our 'private vineyard' and grapes for a pre-breakfast snack!
The pool and its surround is lovely - very refreshing after a hot day. The gardens and courtyards are beautiful - lit by candles after dark and so romantic. There is so much attention to detail at La Fauvelle.
We ate the table d'hote and found it delicious and well presented (especially Mario's mama's piri piri chicken!!). The wine was so good that we later went to the chateau to buy some! The little visit to St Colombe was interesting - a beautiful village and very friendly wine growers. We also visited Castelnou which is rather touristy but very pretty.
So, overall La Fauvelle gets the big thumbs up - so much so that we changed our plans for the return journey so we could stay there a second time! The staff were all helpful and friendly - nothing was too much trouble and it was good to see how they proudly used local produce for meals. Mario is a delight - full of enthusiasm and warmth and is so efficient.
Lastly just a word about the buildings. We love converted buildings anyway but this hotel is fabulous, bringing former industrial buildings back to life. The conversion is amazing and there are lots of lovely touches in the complex. The sense of space is wonderful, the art is astonishing and the furniture is a perfect combination of ancient and modern.
