Since we were touring France, Figeac was on our route and we were not actually staying there. We arrived shortly before midday and soon found a place to park. We found our way to the centre only to find not only the Champollion museum about to close but the tourist office had also just closed for a two hour lunch break as they do in France. Not to be daunted, we looked around for a suitable place for lunch which was a self service place in a corner opposite the tourist office. The caramelised pork was absolutely delicious and melt in the mouth and freshly cooked. As it was a small place, taking your own cutlery and being called when ready was not a problem.
There were benches around this square and I think they are well used by people waiting for the tourist office to open. Sure enough at 2.p.m. on the dot, the doors opened and the staff quickly
carried out their business. We were given a map and shown what to see. We were then able to see the Champollion museum and have a wander around this delightful town. When we left in late afternoon, people were crawling around with their cars trying to find a parking spot and at least two cars were eyeing up our space with the first one swiftly appropriating it. My advice is to come here in the morning if you are to have a chance to park

This is a delightful place in which to spend a day. Firstly go to the Office du Tourisme where you can obtain a written guide (we chose one in English). We followed the easily marked signposts around a trail of significant buildings and locations.
There are sites from the 15th century, 2 delightful churches and a range of streets with exceptional architectural features. It is an easily followed route which has approx 28 points and easily accomplished in 1 1/2 hours.
The town itself is a tasteful mixture of old and new. One can shop for nice things or simply marvel at the history of the town.
One must visit the Museum of Champollion, (who was instrumental in solving the mystery of hieroglyphics via the Rosetta stone), a native of Figeac.
