We stayed here for two days in July and were made very welcome by the owners. The room was clean and spacious and the hotel is ideally situated in the town square. We had half board so a continental breakfast, which was good, and then a choice from the a la carte menu in the evening. An amuse bouche, starter, main and dessert. All very enjoyable and certainly very good value. I would certainly recommend a stay here if you are in the area.

We stayed for just one night (a Sunday, so no chance to try the meals), and had a choice of rooms; we couldn't resist a room overlooking the square, despite other's warnings of noise. It was fine; we lowered the shutters and this kept out most of the noise and the light, and we had a good night's sleep (despite the jetlag after nearly 40 hours awake). Our hostess was as friendly as other reviewers have noted, and it was all so easy.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the square are quiet enough with the shutters down, and have a great view!

We've stayed here many times over the last 9 years. Always a warm welcome from Nathalie, who owns this hotel with her husband Luc (who does the cooking). Nathalie speaks excellent English and is very helpful. Front bedrooms have a magnificent view over the Grand Place - I note some reviewers have commented on noise from traffic on the cobbles but this has never bothered us.Our room was spacious, very clean and nicely decorated. Breakfast is pre-ordered the night before which results in excellent fresh pastries and bread picked up each morning. An excellent small hotel with a lovely personal touch. We'll be back!

Room Tip: First floor at the front

This is the very best small hotel in France that we have ever used. Lots of character with wonderful quirky wood floors. Rooms are large and comfortable. Breakfast was wonderfully French with all the right ingredients. Our dinner memorable and what ever do not miss the five desserts on a plate! The host speaks English and is charming; nothing is to much trouble!

We stayed at Hotel Restaurant Le Foch in Cassel for our overnight trip to France and would gladly recommend it to anyone. Our room was wonderfully spacious with a large bathroom and separate dressing room too. Overlooking the main street it was not at all noisy on a Saturday night and we could enjoy the golden evening sun streaming in through our windows. We took advantage of the half board option and the starters were mouth-wateringly delicious and the beef rump on offer was of excellent quality. Dessert was a delicious quintet of dainty miniatures. The hosts do an excellent job and offer an extremely warm welcome. Well deserving of the tripadvisor award.

This is an excellent example of a traditional small French hotel, in this case run by a charming couple, Nathalie (front of house) and Luc (in the kitchen), in the centre of Cassel. Our room was large by any standard; more like a studio with its large round table, light and airy with large windows and decorated in traditional style. It was very comfortable. Unlike so many traditional hotels, a bathroom had not been squeezed into the room. Rather, an adjacent room had been converted, creating an enormous bathroom and comfortable antechamber. Yet following the honourable tradition of small hotels in France, the plumbing was suitably idiosyncratic! The room overlooked a lively and interesting cobbled main street, but one which was quite quiet late at night. The restaurant served traditional French fare but with a modern twist. It was excellent. Although this was a one night "stop over" the hotel would make a good base for an extended visit to a fascinating area of France especially for those on pilgrimages to significant WW1 sites. This is the first traditional small hotel in France which has "ticked all the boxes" for well over two decades. Very good value for money.

Nathalie and Luc own and run Hôtel le Foch; Luc is the chef. Together, they provide what is, to many of us who know France, the typical French hotel. However, to use the word "typical" is a misnomer. Le Foch, in the centre of Cassel, combines a care for the guests who are staying, with a menu which surprises and delights those who stay for dinner.

107€ is surprising for evening meal, bed and breakfast. The food is of a very high standard. Chicken livers in Madeira sauce are the perfect starter, and where else would you have, as another of the starters, a dozen (yes - a whole dozen) escargots? As for the main course, jarret de veau, rump steak, selle d'agneau....all melt in the mouth. It is difficult to describe the desserts, which consisted of 5 or 6 separate items. Suffice to say that they were to die for.

Nathalie's welcome was very friendly, but never too much. Her English is excellent, for those of us who can speak some French, but who need the reassurance of an English speaker. Our room (Room 1 overlooking the square) was warm and comfortable, but if you like the conformity of a chain hotel, it's not for you. After all, we've never stayed in a Novotel where the en suite bathroom has its own French windows and balcony - bizarre!

Criticisms? The 21 stairs to the first floor were steep and rather difficult for poor old Grunt whose knees were playing up. I hate to think what the mile of pavé leading to the village centre did for our suspension! These criticisms are minor, however, when we are speaking of a hotel run by a couple who know their business, who know their guests and who set out to make their stay a happy one.

Merci, Nathalie et Luc et à bientôt! Next time we need a short break in Northern France, we'll be back!
