“Exquisite and luxurious”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 July 2013

Very luxurious hotel in the small lovely village of Cassel, on a hill, with a wonderfull view on the countryside. Extremely friendly staff. The rooms are super: clean, spacious, luxurious, bright.
Nice outdoor swimming pool and garden with chairs and deckchairs.
Cosy lounge and bar with many excellent whiskies. Breakfast is rather expensive for what it is. But all the same it is highly recommendable. Women will like a beauty treatment in the hotel's beautysalon, men will like a relaxing massage.
The hotel has no restaurant but offers roomservice with simple meals (spaghetti..)

Room Tip: The rooms on the gardenside have spectacular views over the countryside.

There aren't many places to stay in this town that is a little off the beaten path for tourists. Each room has a unique personality. If you need something in the evening, your French language skills need to be pretty good because there are not english speakers working around the clock. Our business group had some meals catered at the hotel and the food was excellent. A boulangerie within a block made breakfast a breeze. Depending on the night of the week, may be a challenge to find an open restaurant in the town, but we always managed to find at least one open and all were pretty good.

Room Tip: Each room has a personality. Not sure there is a good tip, but tell them if you have a feel (femini...

I stay there every couple of months or so during business trips to the region. It's a very lovely building and retains a lot of it's history and old world charms and the setting is lovely. It has wonderful views across the countryside from the restaurant and terrace. The town of Cassel is nice and has several decent restaurants. It is also great to walk to the top of the hill for the views and to visit the old restaurant there.
The hotel itself is ok and the rooms are all individually themed and decorated. Some a little esoteric and quirky and some a little more plain. All have nice touches and but not everything quite seems to flow - sunken baths at the end of the bed (that you can fall into in the dark), mirrors on the ceiling, toilets behind curtains etc. OK nothing to worry about. It's all clean and works and it is nice to stay in a beautiful old chateau in rural France.
Breakfast is simple, no choice, but is adequate. The food in the evening is not worth staying in for especially when there are good restaurants in the town just a couple of hundred meters away.
The place is at it's best in the summer when the outdoors pool comes into play and the terrace is a great place to have breakfast or an evening cocktails.
The people are nice and friendly and its a pleasant place to stay for the odd night or two. Beyond that quirky becomes a bit irritating. Oh and the wifi is very hit and miss beyond the reception area or unless you leave your bedroom door wide open!
Very limited car parking (4 cars) in the front courtyard accessed via a very tight entrance but there is more parking at the back which is a bit tricky to find and then a hike up several outside stairways and across lawns to get to the hotel (ok if it is not raining). More parking available in the town square.
Nearly 4 stars but misses on a few simple things .....

Room Tip: Rooms at the back have nice views (but poor wifi).

I once popped in to ask for a brochure just after the Shoebeque had opened, and was offered a glimpse into almost all of the individually-styled rooms. I couldn't wait for an opportunity to stay there, and now I have!
Friendly staff, historic building (residence of Marshal Foch during early part of World War I), attractive decor, on-site parking, and a 2-min walk from the ancient cobbled main square of Cassel, perched on a hill above the Flanders plain.
We had the Foch suite, with a decor slighty more sober than some of the others. Vast windows looked south over the plain; the bed was huge, and very comfortable; kettle and Nespresso coffee machine provided (though we were rather incompetent at using the latter, and only produced something like dishwater); separate bathroom with shower and roll-top bath (slightly disconcerting to find no door on the loo, but you could shut the door to the whole bathroom area so not a major problem).
No restaurant in the hotel, but plenty of eateries within walking distance. Many of them are closed in the evenings in the early part of the week, though.
The Shoebeque is expensive, though worth it for a special treat. I thought, however, that the breakfast was overpriced at 17 euros a head, especially as my partner is diabetic and had to forego jam, pastries, pancake. He just had coffee, a bit of fruit, and begged some cereal (cornflakes only on offer); luckily we had a supply of bananas in the car to supplement the menu.
Great place though. Would definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: The Foch suite has great views - and a vast double bed.

We were meant to stay in their cheaper B&B but got upgraded to the 4* hotel for the same price, which was a real bonus. The hotel is in a great location and the village of Cassel is charming. It has lots of restaurants to chose from. We didn't eat in the hotel as guessed it would be pricey. We had our breakfast included which I think was meant to cost 14euro, which would have been a bit steep for what you got. However the dining room does have fabulous views over the countryside. The hotel itself has lovely grounds and pool

We stayed when attending a wedding in a nearby location, what a great choice!

The hotel is set in lovely surroundings, we saw a few different rooms and cottages as we were a big party and all the rooms are really really well thought out, some with great views over green fields and the service is amazing.
Everyone we came into contact with was helpful and kind and smiling. We had several members of the family stay here and everyone agreed that it was really really good. There is no restaurant in the hotel but i highly recommend their breakfast- pastries, juice, hot drinks, crepe, fruit salad, some cheese and ham all served in the lovely main room overlooking a stunning view. There are many good restaurants just 5 minutes walk in the centre of town (Cassel is a lovely old town , set high up on hill, one of the nicest towns we've visited in the North) on a Sunday where most things are closed, you can also get a take away pizza in town or Frites and hamburger which were surprisingly good!! We also booked a catered family Brunch for about 30 people and had it in the main room in the hotel and can honestly say it was really the highlight of the visit, in terms of quality of service, food, surroundings and price. I did make use of the Spa and found the treatments ok not great but just OK. Their pool and sauna however are fabulous and if you happen to visit on a sunny day then spending time there is so relaxing and romantic.
I would recommend this hotel with out hesitation and in fact we're already planning our next stay there. We can't wait to got back so such a stunning, relaxing and romantic place.
