“"I HAVE RETURNED" !!!!”
Reviewed 2 June 2018 for a stay in May 2018

Great to have been back to Carole and Richard's lovely home for another three nights in the Pool House. They have truly done a wonderful job in creating the perfect location for a restful holiday in beautiful surroundings. Weather was perfect -- pool was a little chilly but hey; it's only May so will let them off this one! Can heartily recommend this venue and will look forward to me next visit.

Thank you so much for your kind words!
It was lovely to be able to welcome you back and we thank you for the kind delivery of 'extra strong cheddar cheese'!! Plus other bits we miss so much!
We're delighted you enjoyed the rest of your 'tour' home and very happy your tyres remained in tact this trip!
We hope to be welcoming you again some day soon and thank you for choosing to stay with us again this year.
With our very warmest wishes
Carole and Richard

“Friendly run Gites”

Had the pleasure of staying for three nights in the Upper School House. Well situated Gite, close to Aubeterre. The weather was lovely, good enough to eat outside. Carole is very knowledgeable and helpful and recommended a restaurant for lunch at Bardinac, and it didn't disappoint - no menu but 5 courses of great rustic French fayre including wine for 14 euros a head - amazing value. A trip to St Emilion is a must, a great atmosphere at lunchtime in the square, and lovely streets to stroll through. The Gite is well equipped, although we didn't cook as the temptation to eat out was too great!!! The master bedroom is lovely, very quiet and a super comfy bed!! The lounge is light and airy. Thank you for your hospitality, help and valuable advice. We look forward to a return visit sometime in the future.

“Home from home”
Reviewed 5 October 2017 for a stay in September 2017

This was our 3rd visit to the School House and the welcome & facilities were as usual 1st class.
Late September/October is a wonderful time to visit the Charente with Saint Romain being an excellent base from which to visit the famous wine areas of the Bordeaux region. This is the season of beautiful colourings with the vineyards looking like fields of gold. So many beautiful places to visit.
Thank you, Carol & Richard, for yet another wonderful stay & we'll look forward to returning next year.

Just wonderful to have you both here again and thank you for your kind words! It is a beautiful time of year and with the temperatures still in the 20's, as you say, a fabulous part of the world to visit.
We're delighted you chose to holiday with us again and we too look forward to next year and your annual pilgrimage to the Charente, and in particular Saint-Romain. Xx

“Family Holiday”
Reviewed 31 August 2017 for a stay in August 2017

Our Family and some Friends took over the whole property, and therefore used Upper & Lower School House + the Pool House. Lovely area, 2 doors away from the local supermarket - if a large group you need to think about a bulk order the day previously to obtain sufficient bread etc. Owners went out of their way to ensure everything was to our satisfaction, and nothing was too much trouble. Pool got a lot of use, as did the BBQs. Next big Town is Chalais, not too far to drive to and many shops to use. Could have stayed much longer if we could have.

We're so happy you enjoyed your holiday and having the exclusive use of the whole complex; it does lend itself nicely to this type of family/friend holiday!
It was a pleasure seeing your grandchildren's swimming progress so positively and we hope that they will have very happy memories of their achievements at The School House.
We be delighted to welcome you all back and truly hope our paths will cross again very soon!
Until then, once agsin, thank you for choosing us and adding your review. We're very grateful

“Aaaaand relax!”
Reviewed 10 July 2017 for a stay in June 2017

Stayed in the Pool House gite, ideal for two people and just two steps to the fantastic (and maintained daily) pool. An oasis of tranquillity in the sleepy village of St Romain. Lovely welcome from the delightful hosts, Richard and Carole, a mine of information about the surrounding area. Very well equipped accommodation, including dishwasher, DVD player, Freeview and a private barbecue. Plenty of parking and a shop and (excellent) restaurant on the doorstep. Ideal base to relax in while exploring the region. Would we return? Definitely.

“Chillsville”
Reviewed 23 April 2017 for a stay in April 2017

We have just returned from a week in the pool house and had the most relaxing time ever. Richard was the perfect host and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The property has everything you need and we slept so well in the very comfortable bed. Aubeterre is beautiful and we enjoyed the walk there and back(c 30mins). Dined at the hotel in Saint Romain twice and had the most wonderful food and hospitality. All in all we can recommend this place for a totally relaxing stay and Richard and Carole are the perfect hosts. We will return

Thank you for your kind review and generous words!
It was an absolute pleasure having you both staying in the Pool House and welcoming you to this beautiful part of France.
We're so glad you had a really peaceful and relaxing holiday and slept well! We know how incredibly important this is!
We'd also like to congratulate Trevor for not only braving the swimming pool so early in the season but for definitely being the earliest to ever swim in any given year!!! The water, as you now know, can be a little cold during April!!!
We so hope you will return next year and we look forward to catching up again and the occasional glass of wine, should you wish!
With kind regards and best wishes,
Carole and Richard

“With Misty eyes..”
Reviewed 15 February 2017 for a stay in August 2016

With misty eyes we begin our annual search for the next holiday and I think it's a testament of Richard and Carole that we still remember our last holiday a year on. We visited in peak season 2016 but the sleepy hamlet of saint romain is so laid back and quiet you would not know it. The location is fantastic for exploring - the beautiful aubeterre is a short hop away- the walk there is lovely but on a very hot day with young kids and an unimpressed wife probably needs better planning...the dordogne is on the doorstep really and there are some lovely places to visit. Whilst the coast is doable for a day trip we did not bother as we loved the local river beaches - chilling out and picnicking . When we were not out we chilled by the lovely shared pool and garden. We may have been very lucky but we met some really lovely other families whilst we were there and enjoyed the shared nature of the garden etc. We would also echo all the comments about the hosts who were fantastic and helpful- clearly a work of love and attention. We stayed in the bottom apartment which was lovely( there are 3 parts that can be rented separately or together) - the only minor thing we had not realised was that it's on a split level from the garden so it meant one of us always had to keep an eye on the kids ( 3 and 6 at the time) so we could not prep a meal whilst the kids played. All pools are alarmed in France but it was just a peace of mind factor! Overall a fantastic thoroughly enjoyable holiday and if we ever return to the area we know where to look up first !! With love and kisses the Mearnsies

What a wonderful surprise to receive this amazing review today!
We are totally 'chuffed' that you still remember your holiday last summer and still have fond memories - thank you so so much.
We enjoyed meeting you and your lovely family, your children are adorable and an absolute credit to you both!
We have always considered ourselves very very lucky with our guests, as we've always been blessed with kind, caring, well mannered and sociable families! Yours is no exception!
We hope our paths may cross again one day but until then, from us both, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts; we truly appreciate it!
Kindest regards to you all
Carole and Richard xx
