Great to have been back to Carole and Richard's lovely home for another three nights in the Pool House. They have truly done a wonderful job in creating the perfect location for a restful holiday in beautiful surroundings. Weather was perfect -- pool was a little chilly but hey; it's only May so will let them off this one! Can heartily recommend this venue and will look forward to me next visit.
Had the pleasure of staying for three nights in the Upper School House. Well situated Gite, close to Aubeterre. The weather was lovely, good enough to eat outside. Carole is very knowledgeable and helpful and recommended a restaurant for lunch at Bardinac, and it didn't disappoint - no menu but 5 courses of great rustic French fayre including wine for 14 euros a head - amazing value. A trip to St Emilion is a must, a great atmosphere at lunchtime in the square, and lovely streets to stroll through. The Gite is well equipped, although we didn't cook as the temptation to eat out was too great!!! The master bedroom is lovely, very quiet and a super comfy bed!! The lounge is light and airy. Thank you for your hospitality, help and valuable advice. We look forward to a return visit sometime in the future.
This was our 3rd visit to the School House and the welcome & facilities were as usual 1st class.
Late September/October is a wonderful time to visit the Charente with Saint Romain being an excellent base from which to visit the famous wine areas of the Bordeaux region. This is the season of beautiful colourings with the vineyards looking like fields of gold. So many beautiful places to visit.
Thank you, Carol & Richard, for yet another wonderful stay & we'll look forward to returning next year.
Our Family and some Friends took over the whole property, and therefore used Upper & Lower School House + the Pool House. Lovely area, 2 doors away from the local supermarket - if a large group you need to think about a bulk order the day previously to obtain sufficient bread etc. Owners went out of their way to ensure everything was to our satisfaction, and nothing was too much trouble. Pool got a lot of use, as did the BBQs. Next big Town is Chalais, not too far to drive to and many shops to use. Could have stayed much longer if we could have.
Stayed in the Pool House gite, ideal for two people and just two steps to the fantastic (and maintained daily) pool. An oasis of tranquillity in the sleepy village of St Romain. Lovely welcome from the delightful hosts, Richard and Carole, a mine of information about the surrounding area. Very well equipped accommodation, including dishwasher, DVD player, Freeview and a private barbecue. Plenty of parking and a shop and (excellent) restaurant on the doorstep. Ideal base to relax in while exploring the region. Would we return? Definitely.
We have just returned from a week in the pool house and had the most relaxing time ever. Richard was the perfect host and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The property has everything you need and we slept so well in the very comfortable bed. Aubeterre is beautiful and we enjoyed the walk there and back(c 30mins). Dined at the hotel in Saint Romain twice and had the most wonderful food and hospitality. All in all we can recommend this place for a totally relaxing stay and Richard and Carole are the perfect hosts. We will return
With misty eyes we begin our annual search for the next holiday and I think it's a testament of Richard and Carole that we still remember our last holiday a year on. We visited in peak season 2016 but the sleepy hamlet of saint romain is so laid back and quiet you would not know it. The location is fantastic for exploring - the beautiful aubeterre is a short hop away- the walk there is lovely but on a very hot day with young kids and an unimpressed wife probably needs better planning...the dordogne is on the doorstep really and there are some lovely places to visit. Whilst the coast is doable for a day trip we did not bother as we loved the local river beaches - chilling out and picnicking . When we were not out we chilled by the lovely shared pool and garden. We may have been very lucky but we met some really lovely other families whilst we were there and enjoyed the shared nature of the garden etc. We would also echo all the comments about the hosts who were fantastic and helpful- clearly a work of love and attention. We stayed in the bottom apartment which was lovely( there are 3 parts that can be rented separately or together) - the only minor thing we had not realised was that it's on a split level from the garden so it meant one of us always had to keep an eye on the kids ( 3 and 6 at the time) so we could not prep a meal whilst the kids played. All pools are alarmed in France but it was just a peace of mind factor! Overall a fantastic thoroughly enjoyable holiday and if we ever return to the area we know where to look up first !! With love and kisses the Mearnsies
