“Not worth the premium prices”
Reviewed 12 January 2013

We stayed here over New Year 2012. Having stayed at other P&V premium resorts, we expected standards to meet our previous experiences.
The building itself is far more attractive the the rest of Flaine, however is isolated and is not strictly ski in-ski out, as advertised.
To ski out is easy. Getting back to the apartments is more tricky. One has to be back before the lifts close at 1615 and the Tourmaline run that must be skied in order to be on the correct route is very busy, can be icy and is an intermediate run. At the end of the day, the queue for the Grand Vans lift (to the Tourmaline) was crazy. We waited 25 minutes and gave up one day.
If you don't ski back, then you need to squash onto a bus or walk uphill for 15 minutes.
The apartment was smaller than a classic apt in other resorts, though we'd paid for a superior category. Windows, kitchen and furniture were grubby and internet access was abysmal. We were also not allowed individual internet passwords and were told we had to share (4 people in a superior apartment for 6)!
I liked Flaine, but would not pay premium £'s to stay there again.

We have stayed at a variety of P&V properties before and this one felt considerably better built and presented than any of them - you can tell it was originally built by Intrawest! The apartments were clean, comfortable and pretty well-stocked.

A couple of minor issues stop it from getting full marks:
- as often-mentioned, the WiFi is woeful, which is a problem when trying to distract tired kids.
- the check-in was a bit chaotic
- the sofabed was a little fragile and creaked LOUDLY.

However, these were definitely outweighed by the positives. In particular, the location is not a problem, as I had feared it might be. To get to the main lifts and ski school you go down an easy green, up a short chair lift, then down an easy blue - anyone with a weeks' previous skiing can do it in ten minutes or so. ESF collect the beginner kids and kindergarten from the hotel in a minibus and one of the ESF instructors meets the intermediate and above kids at the back of the hotel to ski them all down. Beginner adults can catch the navette from right outside the hotel. We just caught the bus back every day, as the ski back is more complex (and we're lazy!) - it stops at the hotel.

Spar deliver your shopping for free, bread and croissants arrive each morning and in the evening, once the Navettes stop, the hotel has minibuses to take you into town and back for free. The staff are very helpful.

As for Flaine itself, the skiing was good, but if you want frantic apres-ski, just go elsewhere, as it's a family-based resort with predominantly self-catering apartments and very little nightlife. Research your resort and pick one that suits you. We were a mixed ability group of four adults (ranging from cautious-blue-runs to highly-experienced-blacks) and four kids and we all found skiing that suited us well, and we mainly wanted to eat in, so it was great for us. If you want great restaurants every night, loud bars or clubs, look somewhere else.

If you're driving from the UK, it's the easiest drive we've ever had to a ski resort and the hotel's parking is well worth the €75.

When you do eat out, Brasserie des Cimes is highly recommended!

Room Tip: Definitely worth the extra to get a front-facing room. Floors 0-2 are on the same levels as the park...

Ok here it is, Flaine is a horrible concrete jungle but the sking is good. The apartment was spacious enough for 4 adults and 2 children - with two of the adults on the sofa bed - but there was plenty of room in the main bedroom to store everything for a family of 4. Things to take in the case: Dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid toilet roll and kitchen roll.
Ski IN/OUT - Ski out is simple - even the complete novice was doing it on day 3 of the stay (i'm talking about someone who had never worn a pair of skis before) Ski IN on the other hand is a completely different ball game . It's ok if you are a confident blue skier , but if you still have a few wobbles on blue then it is quite a challenge at the end of the day. I did it a few times but also couldn't face it at others.
The Pool/tub are very welcome at the end of the day but be ready for crowds - I had my foot in a strangers lap on more than one occasion.
Staff were friendly and helpful but we didn't ask for much so I don't know how they coped with requests.
Best tip for lunch are the panninis in the supermarchet in the forum .

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing he front and if you have children i'd go as high as i could in terms of...

Just returned from New Year in Flaine. Lots of snow and the skiing was excellent. The apartments allow skin in/ski out although as other reviewers have mentioned the ski-in is rather lengthy as you must use the 'Grande vans' lift which is a blue slope but pretty long. The apartment we had was a 2 bed and was perfect for a family of 4, the lounge had a folding bed so would accommodate 6 but might be a bit cramped. The apartment was spotlessly clean and positioned with a view of the pool so we could judge when to take a dip.
Staff at the desk could not be more helpful, they assisted with all manner of enquiries with a smile and I could not fault them.
One slight gripe - only 2 English language tv channels (BBC & CNN), an in house pay per movie set up would be perfect for those nights when you are so exhausted that a pizza and movie are what you need. Flaine itself was was well set up with a free shuttle bus service although after 4pm the bus was extremely busy!
If I were returning to Flaine I would not stay anywhere else.

Snow was great ...lovely ski area ...Not direct fault of Montsoleil Apartments ...but Flaine is a seriously ugly town ...with few authentic apre ski facilities .We won't go back.
Apartment itself clean , spacious. Pool and Jaccusi very welcome after days skiing.
Only 5 minute walk to town...but can be seriously difficult to reach if carrying equipement.
WIFI hopeless ..
Needs a Bar/Restuarant .Not un happy with Apartment or Staff

Room Tip: Facing to front of Hotel offers lovely views

Stayed over New Year and have found the accommodation and facilities very good, with a very well equipped and spacious apartment, for the alps. Finding locker rooms for kit and the ability to ski in and out all day was a treat. Have not missed carrying skies and poles back to staying on this trip!
The spa area and the outdoor pool, along with the great views was very welcome after a day on the slopes.
We found the staff very helpful and amongst other things sorted out restaurant reservations, pizza deliveries and lots of questions from enquiring teenagers. Wifi was not a major issue as others have mentioned, bearing in mind that this is not a business hotel, where we have experienced worse 'paid' for internet services, then this added value offer.
The only downside is the resort, where was everyone News Years eve?? There is no apres ski at all, this resort needs some bars and atmosphere, or this residence could open one?

We are currently staying in a "premium" apartment, as we do in other P&V resorts when Skiing. (Arc 1950 particularly) the apartment is dirty, small and tired. We have had to deep clean the kitchen as there was grease and food splashes everywhere, the crockery etc all needed cleaning, the balcony is a disgrace with food waste and bird droppings encrusted everywhere (took some scrubbing!) There was bubblegum on the headboard in one bedroom, one of the bathroom fittings is broken, the hot water is intermittent (yelping in the shower!) and the windows are filthy. For the hotel staff, everything is too much trouble but they are smiling when they say no, which i guess is refreshing. The internet/wifi is unusable and you have to share a log in with your family/friends as they ration the codes. The pool table is broken. If you have beginners in your group, the long piste to return to the residence is pretty challenging for them at the end of the day when it gets heavily tracked out/mogulled and it's quite long too (tourmaline). We wont be back. The management of this residence would do well to visit their colleagues elsewhere.
