“Perfect for a weeks escape and relaxation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2014

We booked a private villa at the RHR in order to have a weeks total relaxation - and it certainly meet that objective perfectly.
It appears that the main business of the location is as an events venue (large weddings etc) however, that doesn't impact the quality of the location as a hotel.
The top things worth mentioning :
- The level of service & staff attitude is exceptional
- The level of cleanliness is superb
- The food is really good with a decent selection (half board menu)
If I was to look for any improvements :
- Maid service to begin slightly later
- Beds should be more comfortable (too hard for my liking)
The setting is fantastic, up on the hill and away from the (in my view) hell on earth that is the main strip on Malia - however, don't be put off travelling down into the small old town for a meal or drink.
Food & drink at the hotel is reasonably priced and excellent quality. The spa is well appointed as is the gym (but the mens changing rooms are slightly showing their age)
The private villa are amazing, great views, perfect pool and beautiful terrace to spent time relaxing (or in our case having room service for lunch).
One of the criticisms I have seen is that non-residents (which are mainly young lads & girls staying down on the strip) are allowed to accessed the pool and they can get a bit loud etc. We spent our last day (between check out at midday and transfer at 20:30) at the main pool and although they were visitors (lads plus some locals) it had no negative impact on our day.
One other point is entertainment : The Crete evening on Sunday was really good, the DJ at poolside on Sunday afternoons (which can be heard throughout the complex) may not be everyones taste and the Pianist/Singer etc which accompanied dinner every night were ok-ish but lacked variation (seemingly same playlist everynight).
To summarise, for a relaxing week with good food, great private pool at a reasonable price and amazing staff this is a really good choice ... we will be returning

Room Tip: Villa with Private Pool

could not stop grinning as we were shown around our villa by the lovely receptionist.amazing facilities, massive fridge freezer with complementary wine, water and fruit, sofa bed, dining table and chairs,tv,storage space, toilet and shower room.then up a spiral staircase to a lovely bathroom with jacuzzi bath and shower, twin beds,tv,big wardrobe with plenty of hangers and a safe.lots of storage space and extra pillows too.lovely balcony with table and chairs.then theres the garden.....lovely private swimming pool, table and chairs, sunbeds, fruit trees and a fantastic view of a distant sea.air conditioning very good but the only decent channel on the tv was news...not that this was an issue to us.i would live here forever if i could.
we went bed and breakfast as we wanted to experience all the authentic tavernas in the old town but the food in the restaurant was so delicious we ate here 5 nights out of 7.the menu is a little vague so i just asked the waiter if it was vegetarian and if it was i tried it and was never disappointed.the linguine with capers and olives was my favourite and i had this twice.the creme brulee is delicious as is the orange tart which is more like a very moist sponge cake.my husband loved the sea bass, the steak and the salmon linguine and i have never seen him smile so much about food.the breakfast was good and i had greek yogurt with fruit and honeycomb every day and also sampled all the greek items too.if you are after a full english greasy fry up every day then you will be disappointed but there is alot of choice and they cook fresh omelettes to order. the waiting staff are all a delight and my husband even went to thank the chef personally for all our amazing food.
if you have a room and not a villa then the communal pool is very good.i only ever saw about 10 people around the pool at one time and there are plenty of sun beds.i liked having our own pool though as i got up at 7.30 in the morning and did 60 lengths and had a sunbathe before a hearty breakfast.
the gym is amazing and is very well equipped but you will sweat.
the hotel does provide for children but i wouldnt take mine as its a lovely place for relaxation.it has a play area in the restaurant and a pool but no slides in it,just a fountain.they would get bored very easily.i would like to suggest that maybe on the spare piece of land behind the villas you could build a mini golf course or a garden because it is a bit of an eyesore and many people have used it as a rubbish dump.
the location is up a very steep mountain which we enjoyed the walk down every day but hired a taxi to get back up for 7 euros at the rank at the bottom.
malia itself was not as bad as it has been made out to be but there are a lot of nutters on bikes and quads so watch where you are going.
we hired a quad for 3 days and went exploring up the mountains and to elounda which is quiet and beautiful.be aware that you wear a helmet though as the fine is 350 euros.
visit milos and cretan family restaurant if you can find them as they are very nice.
i always like to visit different places every year but now i have discovered this hotel we are planning to go back next year too.it was a perfect holiday after we got over the hire car disaster at the airport.we lost our deposit with europcar but we had so much more fun travelling on the bus, hiring the quads and a trip on a jeep safari so it worked out for the best.we booked with on the beach and flew with easy jet and it was excellent.

Room Tip: we had superior villa number 305 and it was amazing but we hear the views are better in the presiden...

The hotel is a great one and service and food are so good. It is on top of a hill so you get a good view. The swimming pool is clean. We went there in May 2013 so it was not a busy season so it was the perfect time to us.

Whilst I'm someone who rarely writes reviews, given the amazing experience we had together with how helpful I found the reviews on here I thought it was only right to share our experiences.

We stayed in the 2 bedroom villa with our 2 little boys (3.5 and 1.5). Villa inside is very spacious with 2 good sized bedrooms upstairs and a large open plan kitchen, eating, living space downstairs. Outside you have the private pool with a shaded eating area together with the breathtaking views of the sea. The villa is cleaned fully every morning and in the evening they supplied us again with fresh towels and took away any rubbish we had from the day.

The hotel staff were incredibly friendly and always happy to help. Whenever we called reception there was always someone round at the villa within 5 minutes with whatever we requested. Next door the dining room there is a soft play area for the kids with an English speaking child minder (Marita) to watch the kids. Our kids loved it and Marita was great looking after them and always happy to help.

The hotel gardens are well maintained and everything is kept in pristine condition to give the hotel a real luxury feel about it. In response to some of the previous comments, their was a large wedding on the Saturday we were there with around 800 people invited apparently! However, this did not disturb us at all and was fun for the kids to watch! The wedding apparently ended at 7am but we were totally oblivious!

Finally, we used a car company called gorent(www.gorent.gr). They were incredibly helpful and great to deal with and had the best prices,so will highly recommend to anyone who wants a car. Given the hotels position to anyone who wants to get around (town, beach sites etc) a car is highly recommended.

Given the great time we had we are hopeful of returning next year!

My wife and I stayed at The Royal heights in 2013, and we really had a great time. We enjoyed ourselves so much last year that when we wanted another break this year we had no hesitation to book the Royal Heights again.
We very rarely visit the same Hotels again ( Not sure Why ), but we did and book again and it did not disappoint.
They really do look after you well here, with great food. We were given ( as a return visitor ) a complimentary Massage at the Spa, which was great.
We were a bit worried as there was a Wedding at the Hotel on the Saturday Night. The Hall at the venue holds up to 1500 people, but there was no need to worry at all.
Peace full, Quite, good food. This really is a great place to stay. Looking forward to staying again Next year.

Room Tip: The main hotel suites are completely fine. Not sure I would spend the extra money on a private Pool...

Both me and my wife have just returned from a 12 nights half board stay at the resort . Dont really know where to start. From the moment arriving the staff were so eager to help and cant do enough. Even the manager (who worked relentlessly hard throughout our whole stay) carried our bags to the room. We stayed in a one bed villa which couldn't be faulted on any level and a nice little touch of complimentary wine, water and fruit didn't go amiss. The food in both the restaurant and pool bar is of fantastic quality and plentiful and the veiws are to die for. However all being said it is all of the staff which make this hotel so attractive. They cannot do any more to help you and are so friendly. We are already going back later in the year, it was that good!!!
N.B top tip over endulge in the cocktails at the pool bar. They are the best, made by a hard working talented genius.
