We went as a family group of 11 (from 16yrs to 76yrs!) and overall we had a fantastic holiday and may well be back despite usually preferring to try different places.
HOTEL: The rooms were average/good, the maids cleaned the bins daily and we had new towels several times each week. The kitchen had 2 hot rings, microwave and the fridge had a freezer compartment which was handy to make ice, we didn't cook as ate out but I suppose a toaster might have been handy. The aircon was expensive (my husband cant remember but thinks it was around £100-£120 for 2 weeks) but needed as it was still 28 degrees at night, I think it also kept the mossies away as we weren't bothered by them at all. The staff were fabulous, very friendly and helpful in booking restaurants and taxis etc. The pool, pool area and pool bar were lovely with great views of the mountains behind the hotel and we spent more days there than we usually do on a holiday. They serve food at the pool bar from 9-9.30 and I can recommend the bacon rolls, yum!
BEACHES: Late teens/early 20's may prefer the louder beaches in Malia, our favourite was up in stalis by the Zygos bar (nice clean toilets!) but there are lots of beach areas to choose from. We found that the cost of 2 sunbeds + 1 umbrella varied from 3Euros to 6Euros depending where you went. The beaches were sandy and the sea warm, the waves varied from day to day but there were lifeguards and watersports.
RESTAURANTS: Our favourites for food were the Brasserie in Malia and San Giorgio (best Kleftiko we've tasted) in Malia Old Town. In Stalis there are numerous restaurants that back on to the sea, if you walk through them you can get a lovely table overlooking either the sandy beach (eg Mythos) or overlooking the rocks (Creta)
CAR/BIKES: One of our party had 2 quad bikes from Eurocar each of which broke, they offered an upgrade to a car which was fine. (Note: I would not recommend this resort if you have children as it really is Quad bike city and some of the driving has to be seen to be believed.)
TRIPS: The young ones went on a boat trip to Dias Island which they loved and also to Aquasplash waterpark (dont forget the high factor). We drove to “Ag Nic”, it is just as scenic as the pictures and a great place to wander round the shops and have some lunch. We also went on the Happy train, this is a tourist train that runs on the road and has a few different routes around the area, it was great fun.
One point that needs mentioning is that the Hotel is stated as being in Stalis in the Thomson brochure, it is NOT in Stalis it is in Malia (the Greeks will confirm this) It is likely that they say this to encourage a different clientele, the Stalis holidaymakers tending to be older, couples, families etc and the Malia being stag and hen parties. Having said that the hotel itself is in a quiet road, the problems for us only arising in going out at night, it was a 10 min stroll to the centre Malia but Stalis took us 30 mins and a lot of quad bike dodging as there are no pavements in the main. We got fed up of this after a while so got taxis which cost 8 euros each way.

Socrates is a 3.5 Thomas Cook star resort situated between Stalis and Malia. It is a thoroughly well run and organised resort consisting of self catering apartments set round a pool and bar. The staff there were extremely friendly and welcoming and the resort was very well cleaned, the rooms and communal areas were almost spotless. The rooms are big and well furnished, all with balcony and the bar does average food. The resort is pretty quiet as it is set back from the main road between Stalis and Malia and would be ideal for families. There are pool toys, child pool etc.

Socrates is close to bars / cafes / restaurants and is about 10 minute walk from the epicentre of Malia or 20 minutes from the centre of Stalis. The beaches nearby are packed with sunbeds etc but a mile or so to the East long stretches of undisturbed beaches can be found.

Would def. recommend this, excellent value for a really pleasant resort.
