“Unforgetable holiday”
Reviewed 21 July 2013

We spent a week in Ikaros with 3 children at different age (2,7,12). All of us enjoyed the stay, with the support of very kind service team we felt ourselves really good. The pools, beach are clean, never crowded. Only one point, that in the spa area there are only cold water pools available, could be better a warmer jakuzzi for example. The sandy beach is just perfect. All the resort area is very clean, for us the food was excellent always with a wide variety of different types.
We were in family rooms (2 rooms to each other with common balcony) they could be a little bit bigger (included baby bed we were quite tight). we chose all inclusive, we think it worth.
For one day we rented a car, it was almost the same price if we could walk to the nearby local rentals (but it was one of them at the reception:))
Evening mini-disco, local night-bar and restaurant programs were quite good, well organized.
Generally it could be said Ikaros is a deserved Hotel for 5 stars....
Congrats for the management and we can promote this hotel to anybody honestly.

We were in the village 5-12 July, a party of 11 : 6 grown ups and 5 children (2, 10, 12 and 2 of 17) and enjoyed the place so much that we decided to travel only a little (never been to Crete before).
We had full days of enjoyment, starting with our lovely rooms (we had two superior rooms for ourselves (748, highest level in the village and a wonderful view) and for our daughter + husband + 2 yrs boy, room 756, some sea view and a pool for the building), one regular room for the young lovers (17 yrs both, room 746, close to the pool), while my son + wife and his two daughters had two regular rooms in the main building, with sea view (168 and 169), the enormous choice for breakfast, the great pools, spa, sauna and indoor pool, the bars, children's playroom and playground, children's pool, and the wonderful beach. The location, the site and everything around were a source of endless pleasure, mostly for the younger generation but also for all the others.
The village is highly recommended for a wonderful, pleasant and relaxing family vacation. This is probably the best family vacation that we ever enjoyed. We will certainly return !

All in all we had an excellent holiday experience in this family friendly Kreta resort. The rooms are spread out in several two story buildings located in a beautiful garden and pool landscape directly at a terrific sand beach. Everything was up to our expectations, If only the food would be better.

Dear Trevor,

we really enjoyed reading your comment.
Our guests opinion does mean a lot to us and we are happy to hear, that you had a good time staying here with us.
It is a pitty, that you were not happy with the food. We have such a big variety in the Main Restaurant with the different theme menus. For special wishes, there are furthermore our three A La Carte Restaurants.Usual we get good feedback concerning the food.
We hope to see you again one day soon.

We started our holiday with a real bad start, arriving at 5am at the airport rather than 18h the evening before because of a lousy airplane company (I won't mention their name, Transavia, oops to late, just did) that doesn’t know how to deal with problems caused by being more than just a little late, no information whatsoever given, no excuses, no nothing. (In fact leaving a week later, same company and again arriving late in Paris, and again no excuses)

Luckily for us the Hotel Ikaros in Malia, Crete does and even though we arrived about 11 hours late and at an unearthly hour a taxi was waiting for us to take us to our hotel from the airport,

30 minutes later we ere dropped of at the reception, where we were kindly greeted by the night porter, it started well, as he was extremely kind, saying "I know that you must be very tired but if you could kindly just fill out the registration form with your name, address and passport number I will show you to your room so that you can get some sleep" he even asked if we wanted to eat anything, what a nice way to start at last our holidays

9:30am with only a couple of hours sleep,'too stressed and tired to sleep well' we went to get some breakfast, again a nice welcome by one of the managers saying “welcome and enjoy your stay with us, we hope to make you feel welcome and that your stay should be a good as your own home if not better”, just great,

Breakfast in the sun, this year in France it has been such bad weather and so to be given the choice of eating outside in a blazing sun at 27° was just to good to be true.

The food was great, its self-service except the coffee, and the choice is just unbelievable, you can eat salad, cheese, fresh fruits, home made pancakes, porridge, bacon, eggs, sausages, and so much more, I must admit I can't understand people coming to Crete and eating the same food as at home, get a life you people and do as the Romans do, bacon & eggs are great but when at home in England, so our first breakfast eating local fresh fruit, healthy food, the feta cheese is just great, the local yogurt for instance under an already hot sun was just great,

The hotel offers swimming pools, four in all, and a private beach, so after breakfast it was straight to the beach, with free towels provided by the hotel, these can be changed as and when you like, so you can always have a clean towel, and on the beach the sun beds and parasols are provided of course

Lunch can be had in the same room and terrace as breakfast or in a more cosier restaurant, or one of the smaller restaurants, the one we chose was almost on the beach itself, with a lovely view, of the see and the beach which is where we decided to go, the choice in this restaurant is smaller than the others, but its fine for lunch, for the hogs, there are chips, pizza etc but they also have a choice of fresh fish that is cooked when you order it, so barbecued fish and fresh vegetables it was with some local wine, and boy was it good.

The evening meal is like breakfast, a vast choice of meals, at least two chefs cooking, fish or other delicacies as well as other choices, it fact there is too much to choose from, and although we were trying to be reasonable you just keep going back for more and different food

The service is well just perfect, the servers speak pretty good English and reasonable French so there is no problem with communication also they are very helpful and always smiling,

In fact anywhere in the hotel the service is perfect, it was not limited to the restaurants

The hotel itself is cleaner than clean, the rooms are perfect, the size of our room was on the big size, and again so clean, even outside in the allées, garden, around the swimming pools, everything is so clean, they do take care of the hotel and its surrounding

After a full week's stay to be honest there is nothing than can be criticised

So a holiday better than average, you do not need to leave the hotel, they provide everything that is need for a better than perfect holiday

We have been lucky enough to stay at some fabulous hotels the world over and this is right there with them.
We stuck the pin in the map for a quick week in the sun and took advantage of a Voyage Prive offer, not much caring whether five star meant five star - and we stumbled across a true gem that we'd love to go back to.
Although there are around 250 rooms, they are laid out so imaginatively that each has its privacy and the stonework and flowers make wandering between them feel like wandering around a pretty Mediterranean village rather than a hotel.
Our room was 'standard: sea view' and it would be stretching it slightly to say we had any sea view but it was a lovely, clean, modern room with a spacious patio and we were more than happy.
Like a recent reviewer, we arrived close to midnight after delays and expected to crash out but we were shown to the restaurant, where a fresh buffet awaited us and tables were set, with wine at the ready. This attention to customer need continued throughout the holiday.
There were three large adult pools (not heated, so a bit eye-watering on entering) and two children's pools. One of the children's pools had lots of slides and play equipment, so that was where families gathered. It got a bit boisterous but this was no problem as there were lots of places to escape to.
In fact, one of the unusual thing about this hotel is that there is always somewhere to sit and enjoy some peace - whether one of the other, quiet, pools, the spacious Daidolos bar, with its different levels of decking overlooking the beach and sea or the lounge bar with its garden and inside seating areas.
People did have the annoying habit of reserving sunloungers but this is a problem the world over. We could always find somewhere to sunbathe, nonetheless.
The beach looks a little crowded on photos but there is room aplenty and (for nervous swimmers or those with children) it gently slopes into the sea with no rocks and you have to go a fair way out to get even waist deep. When we were there there was always a very welcome onshore breeze and this created a few waves but it was perfectly safe and good fun.
Like everywhere else in the hotel, the beach was as a clean as a whistle. The chap looking after it was on patrol all the time, picking up any litter (including cigarette ends - eeugh! - what is wrong with dirty people who drop these on beaches?) and straightening the sunloungers for the next occupants. The whole hotel was like this. A table was vacated and it was cleaned and straightened for the next family. Someone finished drinks and they were cleared immediately.
The main restaurant could get a little noisy at night when occupation was high and tetchy and over-tired toddlers decided to let everyone know of their presence but it has 20-ish tables outside, and these overlook the beautifully well-tended gardens, the pools, the sea and the mountains. It felt like a very special setting.
I am a picky eater and I loved the food. It was the best 'buffet style' restaurant we've encountered anywhere. Breakfast included everything from smoothies and fresh fruit to stodgier fayre and bubbly with strawberries (every other day) and lunch and dinner were just as good. Everything was fresh, chilled (when meant to be), hot etc. I developed a serious feta cheese addiction. A small army of staff in the restaurant do an amazing job and quickly learn what you like to drink, how you like your coffee etc. Maria is worthy of special mention, a lovely lady who would grace a five-star hotel anywhere in the world.
If you are all-inclusive you can switch to one of the other restaurants once during the week for a meal and the views of the sunset and sea from Ayeri are stunning. You can also eat at different locations as often as you like, with a discount.
One improvement I'd suggest is that, while the range of drinks you can enjoy on a-i is extensive (proper coffee, too), you can, for example have a Kir with flat wine but not a Kir Royale with sparkling wine, which is 8.9 Euros. This didn't strike me as the sort of place anyone would abuse the system and drink lots. We didn't see anyone over-indulging. Why not make it truly all-inclusive?
The best compliment I can give this hotel is that we totally lost track of time. Flight delays meant we had little over six days, but we felt like we'd been there for ages and came back totally chilled out and relaxed. Our pick up was 2.10pm on our last day. All-inclusive ends at noon but (because we lost a day) the hotel allowed us to enjoy lunch and a late check-out with no fuss.
Running an operation like this requires good management and great staff. We hope our praise is passed on. I'd be happy to answer anyone's questions if I can.

My boyfriend and I have just returned from a week at the Ikaros resort and it was perfect. The staff are so incredibly friendly and the whole place is spotlessly clean. The grounds and gardens are beautiful and well kept and the layout is well thought out. For best value for money I would go for the all inclusive package over half board.

We arrived just before midnight due to a change in our flight time and not only was the night manager friendly and thorough, he showed us through to the restaurant where we were invited to eat at a cold buffet especially for us. It was touches like this throughout our stay which means if we ever return to Crete for a relaxing break we would not hesitate to book the Ikaros again.

We stayed for two weeks mid may. This was our first stay at the ikaros beach but definitely will not be the last. This is a truly 5 star resort. Nothing was too much trouble for the wonderful, friendly staff. Everywhere in the hotel is spotlessly clean and the buffet food never became monotonous. For a real treat dine in the Ayeri restaurant - wonderful food and plenty of ambience. We are hoping to return next year.
