Reviewed 7 August 2014

I've stayed in around 12 hotels in malia over 17yrs this was the best I stayed there July 23rd 2014 with 2 boys 11yrs old12 yrs old also my 16 yrs old daughter was the best ever everything!rooms and beds where cleaned daily. Breakfast would suit anyone if you can't find something there no matter what culture it's got something for everyone.

As a group of six girls we chose to pay slightly more and stay in one of the 'nicer' hotels on Malia strip; we were disappointed and regret staying in this hotel. The staff were rude from the moment of arrival, rooms were all mixed up with another group of holiday makers, whom were forced to move and vacate the room they'd been promised. Once we were settled in our rooms we sat on our balcony after unpacking, the maids proceeded to throw water at us from another balcony for no apparent reason which on our first night set the tone of our holiday we felt unwelcome from the outset. The next day we were approached by the hotel receptionist and asked to leave the hotel as it was a 'family hotel' and we weren't the kind of people they wanted staying there due to the noise coming from our room the previous night. We spoke to the hotel manager who told us if we payed him 500 euros then we could stay; something we had to pay as we could not afford to go elsewhere. We spoke to a further group of boys who were staying there and had been warned numerous times to be quiet, we had received no warning and felt like we were taken advantage of due to us being a group of girls. We were watched and made to feel uncomfortable and unwanted for the rest of our stay. Our rooms were basic one of which was infested with ants in both the bathroom and kitchen area, something which nothing was done about. Our rooms were not cleaned often and in both rooms we had to buy our own toilet paper as they were not replaced as they should have been. A further group of girls stayed in the room next door to ours and after their first night had all their money, phones and chargers robbed which resulted in them leaving the very next day, making us again feel uncomfortable leaving our belongings and passports in our room. We did not eat at the hotel for lunch or dinner however we chose to eat breakfast there once and were thoroughly disappointed in the food on offer, despite the fact that we had payed for it we ate out rather than spend time there. Overall we were devastated with the service we received at this hotel and it no doubt ruined our holiday. According to the hotel staff it was a 'family hotel' it was not and was full of younger holiday makers like ourselves not families. I would not recommend this hotel for families due to the fact that the hotel is on the strip and music and young people can be heard until the early hours, i also would not recommend to younger people due to the kind of treatment we received.

We booked this hotel with high hopes as it seemed one of the better hotels located close to the strip. The hotel itself was not to bad as for the price and area we did not expect the Ritz.

Upon arrival we was given our room key and the staff requested that we give them our passport numbers but did not specify a reason? i still am bemused why they needed this info?
We was not directed to our room just told "follow the stairs end room" which felt a little unwelcoming and left us feeling that our custom was not valued.
Following us returning when we came back from our first night out we met a guy who seemed the night security who didn't go for the obvious choice of "welcome to the Philoxenia" or "How was your night" he instead went for
"if we have 1 single complaint about you boys you are gone there will be no apologies just made to leave" Which for us set the tone for the rest of our stay and just left us feeling as though we was not wanted and being monitored for any excuse to kick us out.

Our Balcony door did not lock and there was light-bulbs missing which we reported but it never got any fitted?
The air-con system was fine when it decided it wanted to work but all in all the actual room and its facilities were not far off what i expected as i highly doubt people will visit Malia for its culture and relaxation. If you are looking for a family orientated holiday then id certainly look far afield as the majority of people here are 18-22 and everything is aimed towards us.
The female member of staff on the reception desk was helpful and turned out to be a diamond in the rough for us as she assisted any issues and helped us secure another night in our room due to complications with our flights.

I couldn't comment on the food provided as i never got up for it just went straight the beach when i woke up.

My views are that if you are young look elsewhere potentially and apartment or someone that runs club 18-30 which is aimed at people in your age range and to ensure you get the full experience and if you are outside this category or looking for someone to take the family then look elsewhere or if you are set on Greece then from what i have seen and speaking to people on the holiday then stay at Hersonissos, it had nicer beaches more shops and higher standard hotels and was much more suited.

We are a couple in our 50’s & we stayed at this family run hotel for Ten Nights from 28th May 2014
From our late night arrival through to our afternoon departure the staff here catered for our every need, absolutely nothing was too much trouble.
Breakfast is buffet style with fresh fruit, crusty bread, bacon, eggs any way you like them & if you like something you don’t see they will try their best to accommodate.
The rooms are nice with free air con a balcony, powerful shower with loads of hot water, rooms serviced every other day with nice clean towels.
Free wifi in the reception & bar area is very handy. The drinks in the bar are very reasonable priced & served by happy friendly staff.
The pool is large deep & clean.
Security is second to none with 16 channel 24 hour monitoring & the staff all know just who is coming & going, we didn’t even feel the need to use the optional room safe that is there for a few euros per day.
The location of the hotel is great, it is quiet so you get a good nights sleep on the comfy beds plus it is only a 4 min walk to the beach. The area where the night life goes on is just around the corner but far enough away to not be able to disturb you.
All in all a great experience, when we go back to malia we will not hesitate in booking this hotel & we would recommend it to anyone.
A big thank you to all of the staff from Dave & Helen xx

Great holiday !!! We booked a holiday to Malia 2 weeks before we wanted a travel on 2nd April, unaware that the season wasn't due to start until late May. We booked in at the Philoxenia arriving at 11pm on a Thursday night. We arrived to see that the staff of this family run hotel were waiting up, ready with drinks by the pool to greet us, the only residents of the hotel that week (as it was so early in the year) however, the owner George and all the staff made it clear that nothing would be too much trouble during our stay and told us to ask for anything we needed. The newly refurbished room was beautifully decorated and very comfortable with everything we needed (great shower). The hotel is far enough away from the main strip to ensure a good night sleep but close enough for food and drinks when required. The beach was 3 minutes walk away. During the week of our stay, the staff and facilities were excellent, one evening they invited us to dine with them and we had traditional Greek Meze which was delicious. We need to give a special mention to Mamma's breakfast and hospitality, she was a star and we cannot wait to visit again next year. Lorraine and Justin

I'm not doubt that Philoxenia hotel is the best hotel in Malia. Perfectly located hotel is near major street and sea. So cozy, clean rooms with fantastic view! We were 4 and had so much fun here!
I'd love to come back to this hotel someday!

2nd time at this hotel and again it was brilliant! It is by no means the ritz, which I think some wrongly expect on here, but it is great for holidays with friends! The hotel is clean and secure, with the world greatest security guy mike, who can be stern and scary at first but is a little pussy cat at heart! He loves the old '50 euro fine' threat which I was actually punished with, but he is only trying to keep the place civilised! I have visited resorts such as magaluf and Ayia napa and hotels there are no where near the standard of philoxienia! The staff are also very friendly and welcoming, making your holiday even more enjoyable!
