As you can read from other reviews, Maria Rousse is fairly near to the strip at Malia, but not close enough to get overtaken by all the goings on. The rooms are basic, but larger than similar properties we have stayed in elsewhere in the Greek Islands. Our bathroom had solid shower screens, which means no shower curtain flapping about and sticking to you. The kitchen has a fridge, two hotplate electric cooker, but also electric kettle and toaster which was nice to see. Kitchenware was decent quality, and very usable for doing your own cooking.

As is usual, we were cleaned every other day, and the towels provided were always a decent size, clean and reasonable new. Our room had double-glazed windows, and also external shutters. These were effective at keeping the heat and sound out.
We opted for the air-conditioning (80 euros for 2 weeks), but I could imagine that this would not be needed for a slightly cooler time of the year. There is also a balcony for each apartment, as far as I could see, with table and chairs.

There is lots of room to put sunbeds out around the pool and on the grassed area, and mostly enough sun-brollys to go around. The pool is fairly small, and 2.8M deep at it's deepest, with only a fairly small section which is shallow enough to stand in. There is no children's pool.

George and Barbara, and the rest of the staff, are always very friendly and helpful. We also made use of the facilities in the main building to have a final shower and change before leaving for the airport, and were able to hang onto our room towels to do this, which was very handy.

For us, football holds no real interest, but it's on the TV's in the bar most nights at the start of the season.

We booked this about 3 weeks before departure, as it came up at a good price, and were not disappointed.

There are plenty of places to eat out in Malia, although you might find that getting Greek food can be difficult :-) , but if you go into the old town, there are tavernas there. One place I would not go back to is the Alexis Taverna, which is just in a side street opposite the church, and the Chinese restaurant just down the strip was not great for it's all you can eat buffet, but these were the only two instances where the food was not that good.

I stayed here with my friend between the 19th and 26th August 2014. We are both young so wanted to be near the strip, but far enough away to be able to sleep and chill out. This place is just fantastic! The strip is no more than a 4 minute walk, but you can hear no noise when back at the hotel room! The staff are so great! Especially when my friend had a few too many, the severity guard, Tony (i think) helped her up the stairs, and made us feel safe and secure all week. He is extreamly on the ball! All the staff are very helpful and friendly and always have a genuine interest in what you have been up to. We liked to stay around the pool most days, it's so chilled out! There is also so music playing in the back ground, so nice to hear that too. The food served here is also excellent! And very good value for money. The drinks are a little expensive, but there is a super market meters away, so best of buying some things there. Rooms were spotless. On one occassion, when me and my friend felt a little poorly (from the alcohol) the cleaners came in. However they seen we were unwell, and so just emptied the bins and replaced the towels and left us to it. All in all, we had a fantastic stay here, and if I was to come back to Malia, there would be no where else I would stay! Great for families and young ones like us too!

Just got back today, what a brilliant place to stay. I must omit though when we first pulled up and was told this was our destination, I thought they had got it wrong, we were looking at a alley way with corner shop, it all looked far away from what we had seen in the brochure. But our doubts were soon forgotten when we walked about 500 yards and entered what I can only describe as beautifully looked after and cared for complex. Everything so clean and tidy, our 3 bed apartment was huge, and so clean, we had all the basic equipment necessary for self catering. Barbara and George were perfect hosts, nothing was to much trouble for them or their staff. We appreciated that the main strip was 'lively' in the evenings, but we walked down to the beach on a couple of occasions in the daytime, and it was OK, again very clean. Yes there is the occasional loud noise from the party goers returning home, but they never really interfered with us, if I had a complaint about being woke up, it was the early morning dust carts, collecting rubbish from the complex. We found many good restaurants in the old town, so there was no need to go to the strip, it like two different worlds. We really enjoyed our week at Marie Rousse, the other guests were great, and we made some good friends, there was always someone ready to chat. The food was very good, and the service very quick and efficient.

Room Tip: The rooms surrounding the pool, seem to the best, as the pool was not over crowded during the day an...

**We stayed in a twin room**
The hotel is basic (It is self catering) you get a tiny table top, 2 ring stove, a kettle and a fridge (the plates and cutlery are in the cupboard above the sink). There's a little shower and sink in the bathroom with the toilet. There is plenty of storage, wardrobes, bedside tables and large dressing table with stool. the balcony will either point out to the sea or in towards the pool. the pool is lovely. It goes from shallow to very deep. It is brilliant in the heat of the day, lovely and cool. The bar is cheap and the snacks are yummy and cheap too. there is plenty of room around the pool and on the grass, just watch for ants (unavoidable not their fault) the staff is lovely, and more than happy to help you with your Greek pronunciation. The location is perfect for distance from the Strip. Far enough that you don't hear it all night, but close enough to get home, while drunk in heels( or so my neighbours told me) The beach is about a 10min walk away, there is a supermarket very very close. (A Spar) and the best BBQ ribs place right next to that. (Called Gringos) there isn't much to do for kids, so i wouldn't take my family, but as a girls only get away 100% would go again.

Room Tip: All rooms are good, but if you have trouble with stairs make sure to ask for one on ground level, th...

After reading the reviews my wife and I decided to to give a Greek island a try.
George and Barbara and the rest of the staff made this probably one of the most welcome stays we have ever had on holiday, the rooms are basic but suited our needs perfectly.
The madness of the strip is 100 metres down the street which suited our 14yr old daughter and her friend the PR's are pleasent and not to in your fac.Old malia is across the road from the top of the strip.
Prices are reasonable and competitive a the Maria Rouse the food is a good standard and the people balance staying was a good mix of young party goers, families and couples.
A mini market 20 meters away a supermarket 175 meters away (on strip). If we go back to Malia I certainly wouldn't stay there again.

We loved this hotel, it's a lovely family run business, everyone wants you to have the best holiday. Not only is it clean (extremely clean) but beautiful around the pool & bar area in the evening with the lighting and lanterns. Pool was Crystal clear & the perfect temperature & the food was reasonably priced.
It's close to the night life as well as local shops, bars & restaurants. 10 minute walk to the next town Stallis (which is totally family orientated) with lots of things to do during the day or night. The old town is also a short walk away and although slightly more expensive it's still good value for money & absolutely beautiful.
A big thank you to everyone at Maria Rousseau, we had a fab holiday x
