Take a view for your self. The traditional local food is delicious. Prepared and served in the best atmosphere by the family. It is a relief to come back after visiting the touristic Amalfi Coast. Take a hike in the mountains and cool down in the neighbouring pool.

It doesn't get much better.

We booked 12 nights at Agriturismo Antico Casale in late May. Great experience!!! Beautiful view from the clean, comfortable room over the Sorrento bay. Great meals cooked by one of the brothers from their local food. This is the best choice in the Sorrento area, if you like nature, hiking and you would like to visit all the attractions, including Pompei, Amalfi coast. Last but not least the family is very friendly and helpful.

My husband and I booked 3 nights at Agriturismo Antico Casale in late May. Just wonderful! Clean, charming, friendly family-owned, great meals from their local food. English-speaking manager. This is the best choice in the Sorrento area!

We stayed here for 5 nights in August 2012 with our 2 children aged 7 and 8. We had the family suite on the top floor which consisted of one large room with a large double bed and a large sofa bed, a small room with a small double sofa bed (where our children slept together comfortably) and a large bathroom (with a hand held shower). We loved our stay here.

Salvatore was extremely helpful (even driving to our hotel in Sorrento to collect us) and nothing seemed too much trouble. Salvatore's brother, Angelo, is an amazing cook and we found the meals to be incredibly good. We ate at the Casale for 4 out of our 5 nights - dinner is served around 8.30pm - and were never disappointed. We had 3 courses plus a bottle of the family's own wine and a glass of their own liqueur - our children too were delighted with the food on offer... The breakfasts were also great with a fair amount of choice. The grounds of the Antico Casale are quite crowded and there wasn't much space to wander around (but it was so hot it wasn't really a problem). There was a terrace where we could sit and read etc - and there is a table tennis table downstairs in the eating terrace as well.

We used it as a base to travel to Positano (the bus stop is at the end of the road, about 1/2 mile away) which is around 20 minutes away though the journey is quite winding and the buses quite busy. Positano is absolutely beautiful though and well worth the visit. Sorrento was also very accessible on the bus.

There is a sort of leisure club almost opposite the Antico Casale. For around 25 euros a day (for the whole family) we could become members. We actually did this for 2.5 of our 5 days - it was a fantastic pool with slide etc and lots of sun loungers - there was also a volleyball pitch (where our son played with some local children) and a small, very reasonable cafe. It was very relaxing and, as it was incredibly hot and we had had a very busy holiday up to that point, a really lovely place to end our holiday.

The only downside to the trip was the noise at night. Although it is a very quiet side road, the traffic was quite noisy any time a car did pass. Also there is a very noisy local dog (the owner's dog was less of a problem) and also the cockerels started crowing from about 4am. It was too hot to sleep with the windows closed so we ended up sleeping with the windows open but then waking with the cockerels and shutting the windows then for the last few hours of the night. It was a minor annoyance and didn't spoil the holiday for us at all (the children didn't wake up at all with the noise, only the adults!)

If you want a relaxing stay in a family home with exquisite home-cooked meals (with nearly all home-produced food) close to Sorrento, Positano, Vesuvius, Pompei, Herculaneum...... - and with excellent (but definitely not intrusive) help from the owners - then this is the place to come!

Antico Casale has the feel more of a B&B than an agriturismo. Perched on a hill with a beautiful view, there isn't the sense of space or freedom/anonymity that we've come to associate with agriturismos in which we've stayed in Sicily and Tuscany (evident when you park in what I can only assume would've been the back garden once - it's tight! - and then enter through the family's dining area to access the house.)

However, it's good value with really spacious rooms (ours was at least, though sadly no sea view - we booked quite late), far enough out of Sorrento to escape the heaving masses of tourists though close enough to drive in for dinner if you're willing to take on the Italian drivers who don't make the five-ish mile (8km) trip easy, quick or remotely enjoyable! Unfortunately the restaurant wasn't open during our visit - though my understanding is that it isn't a restaurant but instead being cooked for by the host - which meant we ate in town every night as nothing is within walking distance. This nightly rush hour trip might've made the drive into Sorrento more arduous than it needed to be...

However, its location is a good starting point for exploring the Amalfi coast, as you're just at the start of the road, without needing to battle through town, and it's a drive well worth doing for the postcard-worthy views if you can bear the windy roads. (Tip: we couldn't find anywhere to park, or even just stop, in Positano or Amalfi but found ample parking and amazing views in Ravello.)

Our main host was Salvatore who was very helpful in recommending good places to eat and where to park in town and giving us advice about getting around. His brother, whose name we've forgotten, (sorry!) showed us to our room and their parents and dog were evident at times though other than that, there wasn't too much interaction, which we like.

The set-up does feel basic, from the parking to the rooms: there is decent wifi, though only in the communal areas, not in the bedrooms; the TV in the room has no English, German, or any other language channels, only Italian; the breakfast is quite limited, though if you like homemade jams you'll enjoy the selection; and the shower is on the cooler side of hot, and the air con the warmer side of cold. However, generally everything works as it should and for €70/night, it does the job well.

We stayed here for 5 nights in July. I agree with the bulk of the comments in previous posts; the view is amazing, food good, owners very friendly, rooms spacious and clean, but it is not peaceful, at least at this time of year. There is a dog near by who barks a lot (the owners also have a dog who sometimes 'replies' but he isn't really the problem), when traffic goes by the house it is loud (the noise seems to bounce off the wall on the other side of the road) and there is some sort of club/venue just up the hill which had events on for two of the nights. If you could have the windows and shutters closed it would reduce the noise, but when we stayed it was too warm to do this and there is no AC. If noise does not bother you, or you go at a cooler time of the year, it may not be a problem.

Room Tip: The website gives accurate information, La Camellia is a suite with a wonderful view, no balcony.

This is a fabulous address that strikes the perfect balance between a warm, family-based welcome, a spectacular yet peaceful setting, a perfectly affordable price, and aesthetically appealing yet cosy furnishing and interior decoration. Ideally situated between the must-see sights (Pompei and Herculanum, Capri, Sorrente itself and the Amalfi Coast villages), it lies just a few minutes' walk up from a bus-stop with the public service that will take you anywhere you want to go in the region. There's a castle with beautiful grounds open to the public during the daytime just behind, as well as a swimming pool to which you guests can enjoy access at a special rate. Varied and tasty breakfasts, plus home-made evening meals on request, made with garden-fresh produce. Easy Jet flights down to Naples and then either a pick-up service or the bus, and you'll find yourself in just the right spot for a varied and delightful short break - or a longer stay if you possibly can!

Room Tip: All five are great, but a sea view is the ultimate!
