La Specola was a connoisseur's gem: an understated combination of rustic charm with aristocratic elegance. The perfect getaway for the discerning traveler who seeks to retire to an Italian, Medieval lakeside village in the comfort of an unassuming but sophisticated pied-à-terre.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The spacious and comfortable apartment not only offered stunning views over lake Bracciano and the medieval rooftops, but provided a tasteful interior that is curiously poised between stately and cosy. We found ourselves torn between exploring the surrounding regions and simply relaxing "at home", playing the piano, reading a book, enjoying the view, or taking tea while our children alternated between playing cards or the Playstation (provided in the apartment) under the gaze of ancestral portraits.
The modern commodities were very adequately appointed without detracting from authentic European charm.
The cobbled stone streets, stairs and ascent may prove to be a challenge to some less fit, but add to the charm of the experience. In typical Italian fashion, the apartment provides a washing machine, but no drying machine, though drying clothes was easy with a rack.
Those seeking the sterile American standards for kitchens or bathrooms may prefer a Hilton, or to stay home, but La Specola is a subtle experience of European privilege and discernment. We look forward to returning.
