“Worthwhile stay near Macerata”
Reviewed 12 November 2013

A local friend recommended this hotel after the farmstay we had booked the night before phoned the next morning to say they could not accept our reservation as clients from Booking.com took precedence!! At the end though we felt we had more advantages staying at San Claudio because of its proximity to Macerata and the freeway. The hotel opened for business in 2000 after restoration, and is part of the Abbey of San Claudio complex. It is reached via an impressive avenue of cypress trees with fields of cereals and vegetables on either side giving a feeling of being in the countryside. There is secure parking for hotel patrons. We had a corner room which was fairly quiet, we could hear the pizzeria/bar located across the laneway when we had our window open, but once closed all was fine. The room featured wooden beams, air conditioning, safe box, hairdryer and TV. The only negative detail was that the outside door handle fitting was attached too closely to the edge of the door, resulting in us nearly catching our fingers when closing the door behind us. There is a lift, handy for luggage. Guests can enjoy the lounge area furnished in leather settees, TV and books.
Buffet breakfast included cereals, fruit juices, mineral water, yoghurt, pastries, cakes, cheese and small goods (these were average), toaster and choice of cappuccino, espresso or tea. There is a small terrace with seating outside, and we enjoyed watching two cats frolic in the garden beds whilst having our breakfast. Being a 3 star hotel, we can say it is very good value and we can certainly recommend it.
The concierge booked a restaurant in Macerata for us and explained how to arrive and park.
We dined the first night in the hotel restaurant (under separate management) and we hope to write a proper review with photos. It was excellent.
We hope to return to Macerata during the concert season at the Sferisterio, the famous arena located in the old part of the town.

Lovely Hotel in the back of a centuries old Abbey. Staff is wonderful, particularly Fabrizio who checked us in upon our late arrival in the evening, rooms spacious, clean and with all amenities. Didn't have the continental breakfast so can't comment on that.
Unfortunately the restaurant was closed when we were there, to our disappointment.
The only black mark is the complete lack of room insulation.
You can hear everything that is going on in the hallway and in the adjacent rooms.
Overall however this was a very pleasant experience, at the right price and would stay here again.

Not counting the wonderful restaurant within this hotel, Hotel San Claudio was a very welcomed stop on our 10 day trip in Italy. This was our first time in Italy and we spent about 2 nights in each location. San Claudio was our second stop. Beautiful countryside, lovely rooms, national parks nearby. Ok, now the food! Wow, the restaurant within the hotel was amazing. Regional dishes perfectly done, and the waitstaff helped us pick out a variety of sumptuous dishes. And when our bill arrived, oh, so very reasonable and I mean reasonable. Don't miss this hotel!
