There are many hotels near the historic centre of Macerata. But if you drive past them and into the "centro storico", it is well worth the trouble of having to cope with narrow and steep streets. Just drive slowly and follow the road signs to the hotel. And then you find a nice front court where the car can be parked (after the compact principle, with car keys left in the reception). Good rooms and an extraordinary breakfast, better than the ordinary Italian drab breakfast, complete the picture. It is well placed near the central square of the town, and here one can eat a good pizza.

I stayed here on a trip organised by Travel Editions, so did not personally book this hotel. The quality of accommodation varied considerably from room to room - my own was in middle range, very small with extremely 'tired' and dated decor. Website detailed all rooms as having in room safes, but mine and many others did not. Manager advised me to leave valuables in hotel safe; when I attempted to retrieve them in early evening I was informed that no-one had a key and that I would need to wait until following morning. After protest and intervention by tour manager I finally regained my items some hours later. Most unsatisfactory.
On a positive note, the hotel enjoys a central yet quiet location, and all the staff are extremely friendly and helpful.

We stayed five nights with a special interest group. The hotel is well tucked away, and we would have had trouble finding the place if left to our own devices. But well worth seeking out if you enjoy a small hotel with friendly service.

The staff are very helpful and do everything they can to ensure you have a pleasant stay, it’s not without its shortcomings. We had a decent sized room. Sadly, due to a glazed tile floor, it’s not what you could call cozy. The heating was only on for two of the five nights we were there. This was rather annoying, as the aircon unit that could have been used for heating, was not working either. So with hard tiled flooring, combined with no heat, made for a slightly less than cozy experience.

Talking to others in our group, it appeared that some rooms are certainly not as good as others. Some had a smell of stale smoke in them. It seems that the rooms on the top floor have been refurbished whilst those on other floors may not have been. The TV channels include BBC World Service and CNN. An unexpected treat was that the free wifi was reasonably fast.

Although there was no cooked fare on offer for breakfast, there was a reasonably good selection of cereals and the usual continental breakfast available.

The real disappointment was the bathroom. It's not that it was too small, but rather the layout. In common with a lot of Italian bathrooms there was a bidet taking up too much of the available space in a key position. So the toilet was in a corner very close to the shower. The shower cubicle was so cramped that it was a squeeze to get into. Once in the cubicle, it was impossible to bend down, any movement meant you where touching the screen sides. Another annoyance was that there was not enough shelf space to place wash bags etc. The only saving grace was the decent sized basin and good lighting.

Overall, a pleasant small hotel, with nice staff, but could be much better with a little thought.

This hotel is just inside the old town, very close to churches, museums, palazzi, and the main piazza. The welcome was warm, and service pleasant throughout my stay, with happy, smiling staff. Opposite the lobby is a small bar area. My first floor room was compact, but comfortable, and somewhat old-fashioned. I'm glad I paid a little extra for a room with a lovely balcony, it was nice to relax out there after a day's sightseeing, or drink some prosecco before going out to dinner.
The room had a comfortable queen size bed (sheets only, no duvet), a big wardrobe with three drawers, and a bedside table with drawers - so plenty of storage space. There was aircon, a flat screen TV, and a minibar, but no safe ( you could store valuables and monies you didn't need during your stay in a sealed envelope in the hotel safe). The bathroom was quite small, but with a good shower - unfortunately no space for my toiletries, I had to store them on the little desk in the room.
The breakfast buffet was limited, but more than adequate: juices, cereals, yoghurt, fresh fruit, breads and biscuits, ham, salami, and cheese, cakes - more than enough.
There are no swish, modern hotels in the old town, so I would recommend this friendly place as the best there is.

Stayed one night at this family-owned hotel. It is very nice, clean and definitely great value for the money. Nice and helpful staff. Had no problems finding it. It is located by the Arena Sferisterio, which is an amusing place and worth while seeing, as the rest of the Macerata. NIce place!

Whenever I'm in Macerata I always stay at albergo Arena. It is very central, and the uphill walk from the station and the difficulty of finding it is worth the effort.
The hotel is good value and I have no problems at all with the rooms and the general atmosphere. The breakfast is much better than you will be offered in most Italian hotels, and the service at reception is also very efficient and welcoming. Highly recommended.

We stayed there for few nights. We tried both hotels of the same owner. The first room we got was big, nice and clean. When we changed hotel we got a small room but with Italian delicacy ! Simple (but tasteful) breakfast but didn't expected more in this price. Nice location, in few minutes you are in the center. They offer free fast internet access. In Arena, find out the elevator before carry your luggage to upper floor
