“A lovely base from which to explore Puglia”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

We spent 4 lovely days at the Masseria on a recent visit to Puglia and it was very special. Other travellers have talked about the beautiful setting which is indeed very sympathetic to the surrounding countryside and the wonderful accomodation (we slept in a trrullo ) but it is the staff who in my opinion set this place apart! From the owners to the gardener each staff member is gracious and friendly with excellent advice re sightseeing, dining etc. You feel as if you are staying with friends!I am a fussy traveller and I would recommend Masseria Fumarola unreservedly!

Room Tip: The rooms are all different and all are very attractive

We visited Fumarola after a very stressful first six months of the year and were looking forward to some downtime. The hotel is tucked away on a side road from Martina Franca and completely peaceful and relaxing.

The staff were welcoming, accomodating and nothing was too much to ask (including our request to switch rooms for one with a bath), both rooms we saw were generously sized with living and sleeping areas. Breakfasts and dinners at the hotel were excellent and evening drinks were served with little pizza-style nibbles.

I've seen some reviews talking about it being a little too quiet but i think that may be a result of not realising the type of venue/size - if you're looking for a peaceful retreat then this is the place for you.

Our stay at Fumerola was nothing short of perfect. We stayed there for 5 nights during the first week in May. We debated writing this review as we’d actually like to keep this place to ourselves but as we rely on tripadvisor for recommendations thought it only fair to share our views! The hotel was spacious, peaceful and relaxing – There weren’t many other guests staying as it was low season but we imagine that if the hotel was full it would still feel private. We stayed in a suite in the old part of the building, and it was fantastic staying in our very own “trulli’. We had our own fireplace, and living room all of which were kept spotless. The hotel has been tastefully decorated and is well maintained.

The service was outstanding, with all the staff being very friendly and going out of their way to make sure we had a great stay. The little details were not lost on us – like proper freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast and homemade focaccia fresh from the oven to have with drinks. Wifi service was included and reception was excellent - it worked throughout the hotel, even down to the pool. The pool was really relaxing, and the area around the masseria stunning. There were some short term improvement works to the pool area going on while we were there, and expected to finish by the middle of May. The works were done with consideration to hotel guests, and didn’t detract from the peaceful nature of the hotel and didn’t bother us at all. We were also extremely impressed by the food- dinners were delicious and filling and the breakfast spread was simply the best start to the day – About 5 different selections of cake (!), the usual pastries, ham , cheese, cereal etc and freshly prepared strawberries, kiwi etc.

We will definitely be back there next year as this hotel was faultless, and represented the best value stay we had during our two weeks in Puglia.

As many reviewers have said, this is truly a beautiful place to stay. We were there very late in the season (Mid October) and so were one of maybe two couple on the grounds, which lent a unique sense of tranquility that might not exist if every room was full. Grapes hung from the pergolas and leaves were changing in the crisp fall air.

It's not super-easy to find, even with directions, but the staff makes everything else easy once you arrive. Golf carts bring your luggage in from the crushed gravel lot, right into the room. Every question and detail was answered - every need met.

The Trulli-styled roofs (yes, your room goes all the way up) are a unique feature that adds to the charm. The grounds are whitewashed and covered in olives, grapes, rosemary and bay, and surrounded by working farms.

For us, the location was a great feature, allowing us to explore this part of Puglia from a gorgeous, comfortable home base. The suites are rustically charming - warmly lit, with authentic details and homey touches, capped by modern amenities. The breakfasts are bountiful and full of variety (expect standard Italian breakfast fare, lightened by yogurt, fruits, oatmeals, cereal and hard-boiled eggs). We took our other meals in the surrounding villages, which are many, and varied. But if you are looking into this part of the country, you know that.

While surrounded by beautiful and unique towns, you are out in the country, make no mistake. It's a good 20 minute drive to anywhere, down twisting, unlit country roads. And don't trust your GPS or phone map - many (many many) of the "roads" those maps show are half-lane animal trails fit only for knee-high boots. Stick to the main roads, and ask for directions! Learn from my wrong turns :) Even sticking to the main roads, as an American I felt like a little old lady compared to the natives who burned around the dark corners in the rain at breakneck speeds.

Masseria Fumarola is ideally situated in the middle of a number of interesting and unique small towns - Ostuni to the east, Locorotondo and Alberobello to the west, and Matera to the south-west. We stayed for 3 nights in the Bosco suite which was in one of the trulli and impeccably clean and pretty. The common areas and the grounds of the property are beautifully decorated with rest and relaxation in mind - you might have trouble prying yourself away from the peaceful surroundings to drive and visit other towns! The nearby Martina Franca has many good restaurants and is also quite enchanting.
We had dinner at the Masseria one night and it was exceptionally delicious, I highly recommend it: lots and lots of antipasti vegetables, many types of cheeses and cold cuts, followed by the softest, most flavorful meatballs and pasta. Breakfasts were quite amazing and copious as well, full of many wonderful choices including sweet melons, yogurts, cheeses, crispy croissants and other freshly prepared pastries baked by Daniello the groundskeeper (who would also builds us a fire in the evening to sit next to in the common living room, thank you so much for that!!!). We were always pleasantly full until dinner!
This was our first time visiting the area and when we come back we will definitely stay at Masseria Fumarola again! Thank you for your hospitality!
p.s. if you get tired of driving, there is a train you can take for an outing from Martina Franca to the crown jewel of the area, Lecce (though I recommend visiting Lecce for a few days at least!). Also, do try the seafood risotto and custard cake with cherries at Trattoria La Tana in Martina Franca... so good! Then take a stroll through the town with the locals. Wonderful!

Room Tip: I think all the rooms are situated well and offer privacy. We also never heard a peep from any of t...

This is a charming small hotel with exceptionally helpful staff, a good pool and nice grounds.. We had a nice room, great bathroom, all very clean. Breakfast and evening meal (try it!) are good. We experienced none of the problems previously highlighted on TA; wifi was fine and the staff stayed up as long as we did. Our only grouse is that there are no price lists for the drinks. When we arrived we were told the beer was "about Eu 3.50". In fact they were 5.50 each! The wine list is just a collection of labels- and staff were equally vague about those prices.. That said this is a nice place to stay a few days
