Wonderful place wonderful hosts

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 30 Jul 2015
We stayed for a week in July and we were very pleased with our choice of accommodation. The house is a very authentic 19th Century country villa with huge charm and is lovingly maintained by the family. Each morning we were greeted with an excellent breakfast usually including many local products some from the farm itself. The highlight of the day was always the arrival of the wild horses and goats that roam the farm land. The owners were extremely helpful and hospitable and fell over themselves to provide information or advice. The rooms all have period furniture but bathrooms and swimming pool are very much up to modern standards. Overall I would have no hesitation to recommend this to someone who is looking for an authentic place to stay which provides a convenient base from which to explore a fascinating area of Italy.

We stayed three nights at the end of August and were extremely disappointed with the breakfast. Also being a farm there is a problem with flies and it would be more hygienic to have the food covered. Surprised that eggs were not offered as they do have hens, but on asking were told that my husband could have them but I had to cook them myself as Simonetta does not know how to cook eggs! The room was authentic with old furniture but didn't use the wardrobe as it smelt of mothballs. It was lovely to see the horses, goats and farm dogs.

The masseria is a beautiful old house, with its original furnishings. The bathrooms and facilities are up to date, but apart from that it's like stepping back in time. The pool area is in a beautiful garden, with lavender and lots of butterflies, but step beyond the garden and you'll find a herd of goats (complete with cow bells), or maybe you'll come across their wild horses. It's a great mix of old and new!!

Carlos and Simonetta were fabulous hosts, giving us lots of info about the surrounding villages and recommending different restaurants to visit. Breakfast was delicious, with lots of variety.

My only caution would be that this works better as a base to visit the area - if you're looking to lie by the pool and chill, then bring snacks for lunch, as the local town is a 15 min drive and there are no self catering facilities. Lots of opportunities to eat there in the evening though.

The atmosphere at Masseria Tagliente was that of a very relaxed houseparty in a lovely spacious and comfortable house. Simonetta looked after us superbly, from the excellent breakfast, the tour of the farm and its animals and the kitchen garden, to the very helpful advice on where to go and what to see in this area full of diverse attractions from old fortified towns and Baroque architecture, to trullis and caves. The reality surpassed our very high expectations. Our one regret: we did not stay longer!

The minute you set foot on this property you know it will be a fun, relaxing experience. Carlo and Simonetta are charming people who took good care of us and shared their farm with passion. Breakfast is delicious with authentic Puglian food. This is an authentic farm with beautiful horses, cows, goats, and pigs roaming in pastures and forest. The landscape is dotted with old stone walls, huge oak trees, and trulli built in 700 AD. The majestic farmhouse, which has four guest rooms with private bath, is filled with antiques that have been handed down for generations. You will love this masseria for its authenticity, warmth of the owners, and proximity to the gorgeous town of Martina Franca. We can't wait to go back!

Room tip: Any of the four room are lovely.

This is a country house built on a farm in the 1840s, and Carlo has been coming here every summer since he was a child. There are modern bathrooms but the house looks and feels the same as it might have done back then. The beautiful ceramic tiles on the floors, the furnishings and pictures all exude a delightful period charm. After an early morning swim in the pool at the back of the house we were given breakfast of fruit, coffee and delicious home baked apricot tart while Carlo and Simonetta showed us books and pamphlets of the local sights and told us in good English about everything there was to see and do in the area. When we came back from our trips in the late afternoon we could go for a walk on the farm which is very picturesque with its dry stone walling, evergreen oaks and a herd of some thirty dark brown Murgese horses roaming free.
