“Very good hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 July 2014

Great service from staff and a hotel that knows how to take care of visitors.location is good in Modica Alta and is relatively quiet and local. Two restaurants service the hotel and both are very good. This is a small hotel but it has a boutique feel about it with people who know what their visitors want. Highly recommend!

We spent four nights in the amazing corner suite at Palazzo Failla. It would be hard to find a room of such size and atmosphere anywhere in Italy for the same price. The hotel is located in Modica Alta and while a steep walk of about 15 minutes up from the main centre of Modica, we liked the location as it felt a little removed from the hustle and bustle of main Modica and you are never far from a great view of the town. Some uphill exercise after cocktails and a big dinner in town is not necessarily a bad thing either.

Two restaurants (one Michellin starred) linked to the hotel are at your doorstep so you don't necessarily need to descend into town every night - we would particularly recommend the trattoria style restaurant. A very cool wine bar is a mere stumble from the front door of the hotel and seems to be THE place for locals a little later in the night.

I couldn't fault the service. English is only comfortably spoken by a couple of the staff, but this is Sicily and not a particularly touristy city. Guilia in particular is an amazing host, organising parking for our car and going to great lengths to suggest places to see and the best routes out of Modica.

It's a really beautiful hotel (feels like a stately home!) in a nice location, but we had an unfortunate incident that slightly spoiled the experience and shouldn't really happen in a four star hotel.

We returned from dinner just before midnight to a very warm room, and discovered that our air con wasn't working. Unfortunately, the hotel had left one person on reception, who spoke only Italian and wasn't the most resourceful character! After watching him spend several minutes just shrugging at the air con and saying "non functionado", I asked if it might be easier to just change rooms. This caused some consternation, but I think he eventually decided to phone the manager and we ended up in a different room. A single room, as it happens, since the hotel was apparently fully booked. To be fair, it was quite spacious for a single, with a small double bed, but it was nothing like the glorious double we'd been in beforehand.

The staff were very apologetic the next morning, taking 20% off the bill in recompense, but I'd expect a better initial response to the problem really. Leaving one person with limited language skills in charge of a fully booked, international four star hotel seems quite short sighted, and I dread to think what would happen if there was a real emergency overnight.

But, that said, it was a pretty exceptional incident and I'm sure most people will have a great time here. Our original room, and the hotel itself, was really beautiful, and the breakfast was a varied and delicious buffet. The (daytime) staff were great, even parking my car for me, and even the night-time guy was clearly trying his best to work through the considerable language barrier!

The hotel is located in a baroque palazzo and is personally run by Signore Failla and family. We had two rooms and spent two nights at the hotel. There was great disparity in the size and decor of both rooms. While most old buildings like Palazzo Failla present a challenge when it comes to offering consistent features and comfort, one of the rooms was not up to expected standards for its price. Common areas and rooms would benefit from updating to bring the hotel up to its advertised 4-star rating. The personal service was corteous and efficient.

what a wonderful hotel, what wonderful staff, what a great location. and the restaurant is fantastic, too. i cannot say enough good things about this hotel. we stayed for a few days while visiting southeastern sicily. it was a great location as a base. the room that we stayed in was amazing...a corner master bedroom that was indeed the 'jewel' that it was advertised as. and may i just say a special thank you to the staff? they were so friendly, so accommodating, and so gracious. it was a pleasure to stay here. i highly recommend this hotel.

We have just completed a driving tour of the Baroque towns of eastern Sicily, spending two nights in Syracuse/Ortygia, and one night in Noto, Pozzallo, Modica, Ragusa/Ibla, Piazza Armerina, and Catania - eight nights, and seven different hotels (23-30 April 2014). Our party comprised two adult couples (residents respectively of London and Paris) with exacting, metropolitan tastes. By general consent, the Palazzo Failla was by far the best of our hotels. The receptionist offered us a choice between a room in the hotel's "La Locanda del Colonnello" and a room in the main building (Camera 103), and we chose the latter; our friends were accommodated in a room next door. Other guests have posted photographs of Camera 103 on the Tripadvisor website; most of these photos fail to do it justice: it is an incredibly spacious suite, providing a degree of luxury for which one would expect to pay much, much more. We dined in the adjacent "Ristorante La Gazza Ladra". Like in the hotel, the service here is exceptional - but we gave higher marks to Ciccio Sultanos "Duomo" (Ragusa). The same, sparsely decorated room is used in the morning for breakfast. The buffet was the best we encountered during our trip. Hotel Palazzo Failla has our highest possible recommendation.

Styed April4-8, 2014. This family run hotel is fantastic!!! We arrived in Pozallo, the ferry station from Malta, and our car was reserved thru Hertz. The location was closed. We arranged for a taxi to take us to the Hotel in Modica. From there it was pure joy, between American Express Concierge service who did not do a good job and needing a geography lesson, the hotel and Amex got a vehicle for us and the Hotel owner himself drove me into Ragusa to get the vehicle the next day. The service is just fantastic, and the restaurant is a keeper as well has a Michelin Star and the chef personally checks on the dinners.
Would strongly encourage anyone looking in the Noto, Ragusa, Modica area to seriously consider this hotel.

Room Tip: The room we had was a period piece from the 19th-20th century and was roomy and lovely overlooking t...
