“What a wonderful experience!”

I can only write about my own personal experience of staying at Castello di Pastine as each self catering apartment in the Castello di Pastine is different. My 12 year old daughter and I stayed in the Mansarda apartment, literally under the roof at the end of July/August. It has one main bedroom with bathroom and then there are two more bedrooms with very low beamed ceilings with shared bathroom which are ideal and set up for children. There is a price difference depending on how many people stay. Despite the fact we experienced quite a few days of heatwave, it was still a most lovely experience to stay at the Castello. However, in regard to Mansarda, probably much more than the other apartments, late July and August are most likely not the best times of the year to stay there because of the rising heat factor; but having said that if you close the shutters during the day, the temperature in the apartment seemed to remain even at the hottest times in the 27/28 Celsius range throughout the heat of the day and it was lovely and cool in the early mornings and evenings when a welcoming cool breeze invariably appeared as the Castello is set high up on a hill. The most lovely feature of Mansarda is its very private roof terrace with wonderful 360 degree views of the breathtaking surrounding countryside. You can sit up there to eat, sunbathe, and take lovely photos of the stunning views at different times of the day. The Castello itself is perfect for a quiet, relaxing holiday. Only a few other families share the large pool with you and each apartment has its own shaded spot with lounge chairs around the pool. The Mansarda shade area is arguably the best because it offers the best views of the olive grove and the hills in the background. My daughter and I often found we were the only people using the pool at certain times of the day, especially in our first week there. Rules are flexible making our stay there even less stress free. There was only one occasion when we had to wait to use the tennis court, and the ping pong table was always free when we went to use it; both are quite a distance from the house down a hill, but the exercise even getting to it is good for you! You can walk around the grounds and explore rather quirky nooks and crannies, finding wooded areas with statues and quaint wooden bridges. Guido, the son of the owner, whose family usually manages the property, was away on holiday during our stay, but his remarkable and very friendly and informative father and mother were there in his stead and did a great job keeping us all happy. It was so much fun to meet all the family when Guido and his wife and children returned. All in all, we were made to feel so welcome by such a venerable family with their ancient Tuscan roots.
If you are looking for lots of bustle and excitement, the Castello di Pastine is not for you. You must be looking for peace, tranquility and exceptional beauty. Many of the finest cities to visit are in the region, such as Siena, Florence, Pisa and numerous captivating smaller hill fortress or otherwise towns, not least San Gimignano with its imposing towers, which can be seen in the distance from the Castello. Barberino Val d'Elsa is itself a small town with a pretty and ancient centre with church, perched atop a high hill with lovely views and number of good bars and restaurants. However, the night we enjoyed the most there was in its town square where the locals serve excellent pizza and other Tuscan delights to help finance town projects...great atmosphere and great value. All in all, Castello di Pastine can only be highly recommended especially to people wanting mostly peace and privacy during their precious vacation time in a truly exceptionally beautiful setting.

“Amazing place !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2012 for a stay in August 2012

Love it all; The view, the terrace, the rooms, the pool, the soccer field, Guido.
We were at unit 1A, 3 bedroom and two bath, all rooms included kitchen, dinning room and living room were very spacious and clean.
We were a family of 5, children 23, 14 and 7, and all loved it.
Very well located, 45 minutes from Florence, and closed to all those beautiful villages from Tuscany.
Guido makes us feel so welcome.
No Wi-fi, and loved it, we spent so much quality time all together, Guido don't put that wi-fi.

Will definitely come back.
