“Tuscan villa on a hillside”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 October 2013

We stayed here as part of our Northern Italy tour with Odysseys Unlimited. We had four great night here. Our fourth floor room had a living room with a small kitchen, sofa table with four chairs and flat screen TV.
Very big bedroom with window that looked out over the olive trees and the Tuscan hillside.
We had breakfast every morning with eggs and assorted cold meats and cheese. Very nice coffee machine that made all types of coffee.
We also had dinner each night in their restaurant.
We all felt that this villa was very nice.
Internet was so so and cost a few euros a day.
I don't know if we were treated any different from other vacationers because we were in a group but we all had a good time.
The grounds were beautiful and the pool area look nice but it was too cold to use it.

Spent 3 nights here in October, partly as an on line package deal. A beautiful building about three miles from the latest village, and places to eat and drink as this hotel's bar and restaurant were closed during our visit.
I don't think you could call this a hotel as it only offered bed and breakfast.
Surprised that what has once been a prestigious hotel could not offer a bar service for drink, soft drink or coffee at any time during the visit with no explanation. I think the hotel needs to revisit this policy as it will turn people away. The receptionist had little to do but clearly no one had the gumption to offer guests some refreshment when they returned after a day out.
Disappointed that the restaurant was closed, not enough guests apparently. The restaurants in the village were full, and this was midweek in October. On a plus side, a good room, and views.

Room Tip: Ask for a valley view

We stayed at the Villa San Filippo for 4 nights in September. I have never written a "disappointing" review before but feel that I cannot avoid it here if I am to be honest. We are not demanding but this place fell way short of our expectations.
We were first given a dark room near the lift and had to ask to be moved. The breakfast the following morning was very average. There was only one person on the buffet service during the whole of our stay. The coffee and juice machines kept running out, there was no decaf coffee when we asked for it and they kept running out of eggs. We have never experienced service like this before in Italy and we have been there three times already this year. The receptionists were not very friendly and had a very arrogant attitude as if to say "if you don't like it, tough". The swimming pools could have been cleaner and the pool furniture very outdated. One actual bed was broken. My partner had a bad fall from it and banged her head but when she told the receptionist about it she was accused of not knowing how to work the sunbed!!

On the plus side the views from the terraces were fantastic and the restaurant food/wine we had one evening was very nice with excellent service. The situation of the villa is very convenient for touring around Tuscany and the village Barbarina Val d'Elsa is stunning. We found a couple of lovely bars/restaurants here.

We, personally, would not return as we know that there are better places to stay that offer a much more friendly welcome than we received here.

Room Tip: Do not accept the room by the lift!!

This hotel is difficult to give an overall rating. It is in a beautiful location, the Tuscan hillsides are all around you with its olive trees and fields of grape vines. The villa is beautiful as well and away from the noise of a city. The room we had for four nights was very spacious and clean, with a kitchenette. Others at the hotel were not quite as lucky. Some had small rooms and some rooms were right off the reception area with constant noise. Every day we had to ask the receptionist to turn on the air conditioning from their computer, the controls in our room were missing buttons. We never got refills of the small bars of soap, shampoo, or toilet paper (which we ran out of). The glasses in our room were never washed, nor were the coffee cups from breakfast removed. Dirty towels were left on the floor, and some other guests said they never got clean ones (we did). There are no safes in the room. WiFi is present only in the reception area and there is a charge for its use. We asked for a bottle of wine from the bar and they acted like it was an imposition to provide it to us, nor did they ask if we wanted it opened. Luckily, we had our own corkscrew. The breakfasts had the usual stuff, but the coffee was terrible which came out of a multi product machine. I'm giving the villa an average rating based solely on its location and views.

Great hotel in a perfect location in the heart of Tuscany. Massive olympic pool (3 pools, actually) overlooking the beautiful area, perfect for watching the sunset while enjoying a bath :) All the staff were really kind and welcoming and the food in the restaurant was delicious (especially the typical Ragú!). Couldn't have expected more than that, I totally recommend it!

The Villa is a great retreat from the hordes in Florence, Siena, etc. You can spend a few days here regrouping. Originally a 11th century mansion/fortress it is now a large inn with a fantastic view of the rolling Tuscan Hills. A wonderful chef, who came and danced with some in our group.
A large swimming pool was refreshing just to look at. The rooms are comfortable, some with kitchenettes. Only problem was wi-fi reception which can only be had in the lobby, you pay E10 for 5 hours within 1 week. One of the best features of the Villa is the discovery of the small towns and wonderful inns/restaurants in the area like Certaldo, the birthplace of Bocaccio. Also close to San Gimignano. You are also in the middle of Chianti country. Beautiful vineyards and olive trees.

Room Tip: Check out the Classic room with French doors that open on to the back terrace.

We stayed at Villa San Filippo for a few days at the end of March to the beginning of April.
I am a very demanding person and the fact that I choose to quote as "excellent" my staying here is due to the fact that I found the place really excellent.
The place is superb, in the middle of the nature, very quiet and still only a minute or two from the road leading to all the beautiful places in Tuscany. Siena is less than 30 minutes away, so is San Gimignano. Voltera, Monteregioni and even Pisa (one hour and 20 minutes) are easy to reach.
We were two families (4 persons) and choose an apartment with two bedrooms everyone with en suite bath and a very large living room. And a large balcony (also the name of the apartment) with a superb view. The beds were king size with orthopedic mattress (one of them even with electronic commanded vibro-massage!). The baths were very well equipped and functioning and a small kichinette.
All of the rooms individually air-conditioned and working perfectly!
Plenty of accessories, extra pillows, covers, etc…
The people at the reception were extremely friendly and I want to thank again to Marcella for all the help she gave to us. From suggesting the trips, recommending delicious restaurants, to give us all the answers we need during our stay.

One single regret – our stay was not long enough to fully enjoy the facilities of the place. We hope to be back soon!
