“Definitely not my kind of place!”
Reviewed 23 August 2014 via mobile

For sake of honesty I must say two good things about this place: the scenery overlooking the main Terrace is really breathtaking and the rooms are big and accommodated our family comfortably. That is about it. There is nothing else good about this place. The rooms are poorly decorated, dark and basically modest with overused bedding and towels. There is no hospitality what so ever: no welcome, no service, no personal touch! The worst being the luck of self of security, demonstrated by the stuff's request to make sure we close well all the shadows at night for security reasons. This was definitely not an experience I would like to repeat.

If you are driving and looking for a lovely location in an old remodeled villa, this could be great. but keep in mind, it is several miles from the nearest town facilities (tho it IS in a perfect location for day drives to most Tuscan sites).
We were given a room on top floor with a small kitchenette and separate bedroom - bed was hard, but the room was very quiet. Even our top floor was only 2 flights up from lobby, but elevator was available. Unfortunately, we were on side away from the views, but from the grounds one had nice views; 3 nice pools were full but closed still for the season even in early May (one pool was about 25m).
Breakfast buffet mediocre at best. The restaurant provides 5-courseTuscan meals, with a nice variety of pasta dishes; unfortunately for us, in all meals the second course was red meat (no fish), and few veggies offered.

Dear Mr. Heund, thank you for being our guest and for the praise which gave us. Our restaurant “La Limonaia” serves local specialties and seasonal products prepared according to traditional recipes, capable of enhancing the local gastronomic heritage, for this reason are not offered main courses of fish. The breakfast service buffet (sweet and salty, hot and cold, light and tasty) prepared with the same intent offers a variety of wholesome foods, fresh fruit, pastries and bread daily.
Greeted her with pleasure, we invite you to come back.

Villa San Filipo is a nice, stylish Tuscan villa Hotel situated right in the Middle of Chianty region and
in a beautiful setting between vineyards .

The Hotel crew is very polite and helpful.Rooms are clean and comfortable.

The maintenance of the hotel is very good and you may enjoy 2 nice and large swimming pools during the summer season.

There are lots of interesting town and historical sites to explore in a convenient driving distance

Room Tip: Try to choose a room overlooking the Valley

We stayed here as part of our Northern Italy tour with Odysseys Unlimited. We had four great night here. Our fourth floor room had a living room with a small kitchen, sofa table with four chairs and flat screen TV.
Very big bedroom with window that looked out over the olive trees and the Tuscan hillside.
We had breakfast every morning with eggs and assorted cold meats and cheese. Very nice coffee machine that made all types of coffee.
We also had dinner each night in their restaurant.
We all felt that this villa was very nice.
Internet was so so and cost a few euros a day.
I don't know if we were treated any different from other vacationers because we were in a group but we all had a good time.
The grounds were beautiful and the pool area look nice but it was too cold to use it.

Spent 3 nights here in October, partly as an on line package deal. A beautiful building about three miles from the latest village, and places to eat and drink as this hotel's bar and restaurant were closed during our visit.
I don't think you could call this a hotel as it only offered bed and breakfast.
Surprised that what has once been a prestigious hotel could not offer a bar service for drink, soft drink or coffee at any time during the visit with no explanation. I think the hotel needs to revisit this policy as it will turn people away. The receptionist had little to do but clearly no one had the gumption to offer guests some refreshment when they returned after a day out.
Disappointed that the restaurant was closed, not enough guests apparently. The restaurants in the village were full, and this was midweek in October. On a plus side, a good room, and views.

Room Tip: Ask for a valley view

We stayed at the Villa San Filippo for 4 nights in September. I have never written a "disappointing" review before but feel that I cannot avoid it here if I am to be honest. We are not demanding but this place fell way short of our expectations.
We were first given a dark room near the lift and had to ask to be moved. The breakfast the following morning was very average. There was only one person on the buffet service during the whole of our stay. The coffee and juice machines kept running out, there was no decaf coffee when we asked for it and they kept running out of eggs. We have never experienced service like this before in Italy and we have been there three times already this year. The receptionists were not very friendly and had a very arrogant attitude as if to say "if you don't like it, tough". The swimming pools could have been cleaner and the pool furniture very outdated. One actual bed was broken. My partner had a bad fall from it and banged her head but when she told the receptionist about it she was accused of not knowing how to work the sunbed!!

On the plus side the views from the terraces were fantastic and the restaurant food/wine we had one evening was very nice with excellent service. The situation of the villa is very convenient for touring around Tuscany and the village Barbarina Val d'Elsa is stunning. We found a couple of lovely bars/restaurants here.

We, personally, would not return as we know that there are better places to stay that offer a much more friendly welcome than we received here.

Room Tip: Do not accept the room by the lift!!

This hotel is difficult to give an overall rating. It is in a beautiful location, the Tuscan hillsides are all around you with its olive trees and fields of grape vines. The villa is beautiful as well and away from the noise of a city. The room we had for four nights was very spacious and clean, with a kitchenette. Others at the hotel were not quite as lucky. Some had small rooms and some rooms were right off the reception area with constant noise. Every day we had to ask the receptionist to turn on the air conditioning from their computer, the controls in our room were missing buttons. We never got refills of the small bars of soap, shampoo, or toilet paper (which we ran out of). The glasses in our room were never washed, nor were the coffee cups from breakfast removed. Dirty towels were left on the floor, and some other guests said they never got clean ones (we did). There are no safes in the room. WiFi is present only in the reception area and there is a charge for its use. We asked for a bottle of wine from the bar and they acted like it was an imposition to provide it to us, nor did they ask if we wanted it opened. Luckily, we had our own corkscrew. The breakfasts had the usual stuff, but the coffee was terrible which came out of a multi product machine. I'm giving the villa an average rating based solely on its location and views.
