Vertine is a fantastic small (very small) village up on the hill above Gaiole in Chianti, one of the famous villages in the wine region south-west of Florence. Two old towers and a few houses, surrounded by walls, all in whitish stone, very typical.
The relais is located in one of the two towers, dating XI (yes, eleventh!) century.
What we found extremely ok in this place, where we stop-overed for one night along a long trip, is that you can enjoy the life of a middle-ages castle as good as it could be nowadays.
The owner, Gioia, is very friendly and does her best to make you feel at home. And this is how you feel, the moment you understand you will sleep in the room that was Gioia's herself when she was a kid. Images from the owners' life are everywhere and the "artistic" vein is everywhere: statues, pictures, even a sculpture lab in the small building just outside the castle main entrance.
Quality of sleep is fantastic. Breakfast in the castle kitchen was five stars.
Do not expect luxury, just expect to be at your ease. As if at home. With the difference that you are "homing" in an eleventh century castle. Prices are ok.More
