“Magical”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

We stayed here recently with Trek Travel. This place is magical. The grounds are amazing and beautiful. You could walk around here admiring the views and flowers for hours. Great food too! The photos posted are an accurate representation; though they don't do it justice.

My husband and I just got back from our honeymoon and Catello was the third stop of our 17 day honeymoon in Italy. We were so pleased with the experience from start to finish. First of all, walking up to this hotel was like walking into a fairy tale. It was by far and away the most amazing place we and our favorite that we stayed the whole trip. The concierge was very welcoming and knowledgeable. The staff was so attentive and really caters to your every need. The room was just unbelievable. Beautiful canopy bed, nice and spacious, great bathroom. The view....like one you'll never see again in your life! When my husband opened the window, I got all emotional because of the breathtaking beauty surrounding us. It really was quite the experience. It is in a good location to go see Siena for a day of Florence. We ate at the restaurant the first night and the food was delicious. They have breakfast every morning overlooking the rolling hills and breathtaking greenery of Tuscany. We also used the spa which is brand new and has all kinds of showers, a Jacuzzi, steam room, Turkish bath...it is really nice. The pool is beautiful and right next to the spa. Know that this is definitely a spot to RELAX...very quiet, serene, one-with-nature kind of place. Best hotel we stayed in during our trip to Italy! 5 star from beginning to end! We would highly recommend!!

This hotel is everything you imagine when planning a trip to Tuscany. The grounds are immaculate and beautiful. Breakfast is served each morning overlooking the vineyards. The rooms are wonderful combination of rustic and modern. The staff are some of the best I have ever encountered; friendly, outgoing, and extremely accommodating. The location was great for day trips to Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Greve in Chianti, etc. Our 8 night stay here was the highlight of our 2.5 week Italy vacation.

We first visited this hotel 4 years ago and fell in love with the place so much we held our wedding reception here a couple of weeks ago. Best decision ever. The staff were FANTASTIC. No request was too much for them. The food was beautiful and the ambiance perfect. I highly recommend this hotel and I know my husband and I (and most of our wedding guests) will be returning soon.

We can't say enough about the wonderful five nights we spent here. The staff is attentive and professional. The grounds are beautifully landscaped. Old world charm greets you at every turn. Book a Junior Suite and be prepared to enjoy spectacular views of the Tuscan countryside. The housekeeping staff kept our suite very clean and we enjoyed the generous selection of toiletries provided by the hotel. Dinner in the dining room was exceptional and the continental breakfast selection was also appreciated. We spent most days exploring Chianti but we did enjoy one afternoon by the pool and it was very relaxing. Prior to our Chianti visit we spent hectic days sightseeing in Rome and Amalfi. Castello di Spaltenna provided a much needed break and it was definitely one of the highlights of our Italian vacation!

We can't say enough about this wonderful hotel. After a few days in Venice and Florence we were ready for a more relaxing experience in Tuscany. We rented car in Florence and drove about two hours to get there. We stayed three nights at this hotel and it was perfect.
The rooms were spacious, clean, and very charming. The bathroom was large and clean.
The service was to notch. They accommodated some minor requests we had and were pleasant to deal with the entire visit.
The food was great. The breakfast was quite nice and convenient. The on sight restaurant is top notch as well.
The atmosphere and location are amazing. The property is very well manicured and has a real rustic luxurious feel to it. The pool and gym are a nice perk to already stellar property.
The price is reasonable given the rooms, service, and location. We felt it was well worth it and a good value.
Overall it was a very positive experience. Highly recommend.

I selected this hotel after finding a trail of stellar reviews on Tripadvisor, and booked it a bit on impulse to coincide with a post-Venice 10 day excursion through the little travelled areas of Tuscany. After my impetuous booking I suffered a little buyers guilt and sought to reaffirm my decision by checking out other similar-sounding hotels in the region, which proved to be entirely unhelpful because it seems there are many fantastic castle-style rustic hotels in this area. But in hindsight I can honestly say that this place is incredible. Spectacular. Extraordinary. Supercalafragilisticexpialidocious. You get the point…

Once you find the hotel - just up the hill from Gaiole town - you’ll be struck by the beauty of it. You’ll pass the ancient chapel and bell tower – which used to be the parish church, but which today is only used for weddings – on your way to check in, and then be shown the excellent facilities, including the restaurant for dinner (the Michelin starred one), the restaurant for breakfast, the gym, pools and so on…I challenge you not to take at least a dozen photos en route to your room!

We were shown to room 31, which was at the end of a separate building that looked like it might’ve been part of the old stables, but which was both huge and beautifully appointed, and had its own patio / terrace overlooking the gardens, valley and surrounding hills. The best part was yet to come though, as we’d booked online for a fully pre-paid (and non-refundable) deal that in addition to a hefty discount also provided ‘free minibar’. I assumed this to mean water and soft drinks but it actually included a bottle of excellent Franciacorta (imagine superior Prosecco), a half bottle of house Rose, bottles of local & imported beer, and minis of Campari & Soda, Fernet Branca, as well as the usual juices and sodas. And these were all replenished daily. Nice.

We didn’t eat at the hotel restaurant, although we checked the menu and the extensive tasting menu at 70 Euro pp and 90 Euro with 4 glasses of wine looked fantastic and didn’t seem excessive. We opted to eat close by at Il Celliere in Castagnoli after reading excellent reviews of the place, but in hindsight (see separate review) I probably would’ve ditched Il Celliere and tried the hotel instead…

Waking up to the sound of birdsong and our expansive view was magnificent, but not as magnificent as breakfast, which is served in the most idyllic setting imaginable – on a high terrace overlooking the gardens and grounds. And the breakfast spread was just excellent; some of the best ham, salami and cheese selection we found in all of Tuscany, including a creamy ricotta which – coupled with fresh cherry tomatoes and rosemary and a slice of toasted ciabatta – was almost a breakfast in itself. Plus there were all manner of fruits, cereals, pastries, cakes and fresh juices to choose from. The only minor let down will be for the egg-lovers, who will only find some watery scrambled eggs pre made in a bain marie with a side of overcooked bacon…

But that’s not an issue as there is so much other excellent food, and the coffee is also fantastic - and no bother to order multiple double shot macchiatos from the friendly waiters.

We used the gym several times but it really isn’t a feature of this place. It’s a small cramped space that’s clearly been designed by someone who has never used a gym, and contains a treadmill (totally unnecessary in this part of the world), a 1980’s step machine and bike, plus a couple of combo machines that try to do everything but do nothing well. Free weights are limited to dumbbells, the heaviest of which is 10kg which means no self-respecting male lifter can get any kind of weights workout here. But no matter, we invented our own cross-fit sessions and used the lawn for some good high intensity workouts. I’m sure the outdoor pool is popular in the hotter months, although I don’t know who the large bland indoor hot pool appeals to…

The spartan little town of Gaiole is literally just down the hill and if you drive down and park to the left of the big black rooster statue (the symbol of Chianti D.O.C wine) then you can walk a short distance to the COOP supermarket for a range of good quality fresh produce to make yourself a handsome picnic. We did this twice and loved taking bags of fresh food and good wine back to our room and sitting out on the patio taking in the incredible view – entirely unencumbered and private - and just enjoying life. It just doesn’t get much better than this…
