“A real gem of a place”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

My wife and I and 2 other couples spent a week on a walking holiday in Chianti. We spent one night at this wonderful small hotel (but wished we could have spent more time here). Donatella was very welcoming and helpful and offered us tea or coffee as soon as we arrived. Our bedrooms were very comfortable, spacious and tastefully decorated and most importantly, a very comfortable bed! The hotel does not have a restaurant but we were booked into the restaurant in the village, where we enjoyed a very nice, Tuscan meal. The hotel offers breakfast in your bedroom but we in fact had it in the cosy lounge room. In summary, a wonderful, relaxing small hotel in a quiet village in the middle of Chianti country, what more could you want..!

After a day of wine tasting in the chianti region, Castellare de' Noveschi was a wonderful place to spend the night. It's in the remote and tiny village of San Sano- not in Gaiole as I had originally believed- so be prepared to find this little village nestled near Gaiole. The room we stayed in was absolutely gorgeous, with a big comfy bed and redone bathroom, a luxury in rural Tuscany! The staff was friendly and helpful, and the village cats are also friendly and so fun to photograph! The breakfast the staff served in our room was our favorite of our entire vacation, with the best cappuccino. If you're looking for a quiet, remote, romantic place to stay this is the place!

We originally booked for 2 nights but stayed 3 and it was a highlight for sure. Beautiful tiny wee village with this awesome Trattorie that served you whenever it suited, with such good value food and wine. Had THE best Caprese salad of our whole trip to Italy. We had the junior suite, with a 4 poster bed and stone walls it was a unique and romantic experience! Went to a local vineyard which was a beautiful drive. If you want an authentic italian meal make sure you eat in Chianti village you park outside and walk up a steep drive near the entrance to village and the owners speak no english (husband and wife) we had the most incredible tortilla with sage butter sauce and gorgonzola gnocchi and huge pizza on a rainy night. Donatella and Alice were so helpful, the breakfasts are huge!! I felt bad I couldn't eat it all! The shower was random and flooded a bit but I guess the plumbing is really old and we didn't care. Pool looked great but was too cold to enjoy it… we just relaxed drinking vino watching sunsets over the tuscan landscape. Highly recommend the Vino spa treatment!! Beautiful salts and oils in a huge marble tub with candles and wine, I'm sure you couldn't do that in NZ!!

Room Tip: Didn't see the other rooms, but the junior suite is beautiful and downstairs there is a lounge w...

What a charming and beautiful hotel in a lovely little village. We only stayed for one night as we were on a walking holiday, but the whole place and staff were so charming we wished we'd booked an extra night. I think we had a 'standard' room - there was nothing standard about it - spacious, comfortable, and beautifully furnished and decorated. We were shown to the equally stunning pool around the corner where I snoozed for most of the afternoon, and then ate in the only restaurant in town over the road - total relaxation! And the staff are LOVELY!

We just stayed here three nights as part of our honeymoon. We booked a junior suite, but when we arrived they upgraded us to the honeymoon suite. It was the most spectacular, old world, romantic room I've ever seen. Our hostess was so warm and welcoming. She recommended a restaurant and made reservations for us for dinner, which was incredible. They brought a beautiful breakfast to our room each morning. We booked the wine therapy experience which is a must do. This is a unique, quiet, charming Italian experience not to be missed. The trattoria down the road was delightful as well.

Our second visit 5 years on to this lovely quiet place in the rolling vined hills of Chianti in the tiny old village of San Sano. The staff are amazing - Donatella and Alice made the experience extra special - even put flowers and a card in the room for my birthday! The rooms are all beautifully decorated in medieval style with modern amenities. The terrace under the vines for afternoon prosecco is delightful and the breakfast lounge has many interesting art works. We extended our stay to 5 nights as it's the perfect place to unwind and use as a base to access other places in Tuscany for day trips. If you like the countryside with walks, excellent restaurants within a few kilometers and luxurious accommodation then this is the place for you. Take a peek at the wine therapy room too. Would not recommend for children as perfect for adult retreat apart from stairs/windows hazard. There are many village cats who add to the charm of the place. We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: Junior suites upstairs in the tower are 'fantastico'.

We only spent one night but wished that we had booked it for 2-3 nights. The room was fabulous and a classic looking Italian room. There isn't much to do in San Sano proper, but that's probably the point.
