Just a place to crash -
A friend selected this hotel during our visit to Assisi and we spent 2 nights here.
The hotel is only accessible by car. Our online reservation (and even Trip Advisor) claimed that they had a free shuttle to the closest train station (Foligno, about 15 minutes away) but instead, we drained our wallets coming back and forth from the hotel, taking a taxi cab to reach civilization (average of 20 euros per trip. Cab fare increases after 7PM)
The hotel is completely outdated. Old decoration on the walls, cigarrette marks on the furniture in the sitting area by the reception desk, dark hallways leading to the rooms, old carpets, bathroom tiles falling apart that revealed the OLD tile underneath! Old appliances in the room (noisy refrigerator, bulky old TV, ancient thermostat)
The room was clean and the bed was comfortable, but overall I was not impressed with this place. There was a concrete balcony outside the room but the view of the swimming pool was rather depressing (I realize we visited during winter and the pool was closed for the season, but the water was turning green... Either cover it or drain it! It looks bad!)
Breakfast was an interesting story: the 1st morning they didn't serve it in the dining hall; instead, my friend and I were asked to sit in the break area outside the big conference room and were offered leftovers from a function, the night before. (There was a presentation in the conference room when we checked-in, and the refreshments that they had were offered to us the morning after. The didn't event take the food away to the kitchen! Cakes were covered with some sort of towel, serving plates were left out too. It was almost like we were the only 2 guests in the hotel at that time and they didn't want to work too hard to make breakfast happen for us.)
On the 2nd morning, we were "upgraded" to the the dining hall. A varierity of pastries, cereal and canned fruits were available and we promptly found a spot at a long table, by the window. When I got up to get a refill in my cereal, a staff member (a waitress) asked me if I was part of "the group"... At this particular time there was no "group" in the hall, just 3 teenagers sitting at the end of the table next to ours. But the woman assured me that there was "a group" coming and we were to sit at a different table. If I were just arriving, I wouldn't have any problem with such request; or if the tables had a sign that says: RESERVED, it would give the guests a hint! But we were already half way through our breakfast! and it really bothered me having to collect spoons, cups, bowls and plates and balance them to another table while swallowing a piece of bread, under the vigilant eye of the waitress who was not there at the beginning, and didn't seem to be interested in helping us moving our things.
There were other things that made our stay rather unsatisfactory. Little details here and there (such as the fact that the reception desk didn't have bilingual staff in the evening that we arrived, thank goodness for Google Translate App! as the gentleman only spoke Italian. Other staff members we met during our stay did speak English so I guess it was just bad luck.)
No internet access from the rooms or dining hall (you have to go to the lobby in order to get some signal.)
The hotel has 4 or 5 meeting rooms, and it gives the impression of being a great place for a conference meeting; however, their "business center" is a sad looking desk located right in front of the main entrance. The keyboard had to be hammered in order to type signs of life back home, and the chairs were very uncomfortable. Is this their way of assuring that the hotel guests won't spend too much time there? On their defense, I must add that the keyboard was promptly replaced after we brought it to their attention.
Again, this place is OK for a quick crash after a long day, but if you have the option, stay elsewhere. Our choices were limited because we were using a special offer through my friend's credit card points, but I wouldn't recommend this hotel to a regular guest.
