Nestled in an apple orchard is this delightfully quiet eatery. The meals were creative and local, the presentation was perfect in hand made pottery plates and bowls.
The service was friendly and helpful. Find this gem just a pleasant walk down the road from the docks.

We made reservations and had an excellent meal at the Ciderhuset. The walk was a bit more (and a bit more uphill) from "downtown" Balestrand than we'd banked on, but the food was perhaps the best we had in Norway, and the ciders were impeccable. Less expensive than Kviknes, better food, and a good place for a leisurely meal. Service is slow by American standards, but perfect for a relaxed, excellent dining experience.

My husband and I had a fabulous meal here at Ciderhuset. The owner/waiter was very helpful and engaged in a long conversation about brewing (something my husband is involved in) and let us try his various ciders, wines, and liquors. They were all delicious. The food was fabulous and the ambiance was breathtaking. Like all restaurants in Norway, things are not cheap. But I thought it was well worth the meal.

in our month long Norway trip it is rare to find a place where stunning view, good food and nice serving people come together to make it a very special occasion.
we have had mediocre food on beautiful spots, and lousy food on lousy places.
But the Ciderhuset had it all right. Set between the orchards on the hill above Balestrand, it is a hidden jewel to discover.
Good food in an ecclectic style with a feel for tradition. A beautifull room and stunning view over the Sognefjord with a 180 degree panorama. And great biological cidre of own production. All served by dedicated members of the family. If you aree as lucky as we were the owner will also let you vist the cider production rooms and distillery!
And don't hesitate to take some cidre home as it beats most bad wine they sell at huge prices in the Norwegian state shops....

I see that many other users are enthusiastic about the Cider Huset. Unfortunately I must disagree with the global ranking. The place is actually scenographic and romantic and I must admit the food is quite good, while definitely not outstanding. I also appreciate the idea of serving local products and mixing norwegian and turkish cuisine. And, oh, the cider is really good. But the prices are way too high and the portions are "homeopathic". The starters: two cigarette-sized fried cheese rolls or two small fish balls in cider sauce. The main dish: two thin slices of mid-quality meat in cider sauce with a pinch of steamed vegetables as a side. Two glasses of cider and some water. One coffee. Total: 400 Kroner (more than 50 Euro) per person and we left the restaurant still hungry. A recomendation for the owners: 30 % more food, 20 % less expensive and the place would be almost perfect.

We take your comments on the price level and our portions as constructive suggestions. But there is one thing we need to comment more in detail. You mention a starter containing “fishballs in cider sauce”. This was actually scallops that in Norway and most other places are an exclusive ingredient. In our case one of the family members are diving and picking these scallops in the coast area of our county. One of these scallops costs 25 NOK in the grocery store. On our meny you get two marinated scallops in cider sauce for 60 NOK. We hope you had a great time in Norway in spite of the price level here and wish you welcome back to Ciderhuset.
