“Good but overpriced”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2014

Very good location, good buffet dinner, nice building.
On the bad side; VERY expensive drinks, wine and beer. Why??? No fridge on the rooms; so no help bringing own beer/wine.
Also only ONE norwegian speaking employer met by myself during the Friday to Sunday stay, but most of the crew was helpful and kind.

I had expected so much more! Walking through the hotel is a treat, seeing the old surroundings downstairs, the old furniture and pictures. And the staff are very helpful in all of your requests, although not too knowledgeable on everything that they should be. The view of the surrounding mountains should be breathtaking, but as you see it with the town just below and the two areas where buses are parked - the view is less than perfect. Except for the spectacular boat ride from Bergen this was a destination I would not return to.

Room Tip: All I can say is the newer section does have an elevator.

the historic part of the hotel is very beautiful, as well as the area around. And the view over the fjord and mountains are priceless.

When you are here you definetly should climd one of the high mountains around to really take advantage of the location in Norway.

The hotel has an O.K. service. It seems a little unorganized, but the employees are polite and helpful.
OBS: when ordering coffee at the bar: if you order an double (latte/cappuchino etc) they actually charge you double the price of a single, instead of single w/extra shot of espresso. This gets so expensive = 80NOK = $13 = 8 UK Pound. :/ this is not made clear at ordering.
The food is O.K.

ORDER A ROOM IN THE HISTORIC PART! if not you would be placed in a 1970-ish cement building in the back. The rooms in the cement building are very out of date, and not very pleasant. Many of them also smell like smoke.

The very modern conference-part is excellent.

Room Tip: HISTORIC PART is the only way to get a good room in the original hotel. Do not order a normal room.

Kvikne's Hotel was one of the most spectacular places we've stayed in our travels. Incredible drive to the hotel with fantastic scenery of mountains, waterfalls, glaciers, snow peaked mountains and beautiful valleys...THIS IS TRULY NORWAY! The Resort is filled with exquisite furnishings, art, wood carvings, tapestry. Hotel's elegant dining room with traditional Norwegian smorgasbord and excellent service. Rooms are quaint, clean and very tidy. Grounds are impeccable and surprised to learn about the strawberries grown in this part of Norway...so yummy! From Kvikne's take a cruise along the fjord to Fjaerland, then onto Jostedal Glacier (largest in Europe) then to village of Skei and descending to the beautiful Nord Fjord and Olden to visit world-famous Briksdal Glacier. So much to see in this beautiful country...but don't miss Kvikne's Hotel...it is a must!!!

Room Tip: Our room had twin beds with beautiful Norwegian quilts. Am sure there were larger rooms but we were...

This hotel has the most wonderful position on the fjord. It is a shame that the modern block is so out of keeping with the original building. However the room in the modern block, especially those on floors six to eight offer the most sublime views of the fjord from their roomy balconies. Being a large hotel it attracts large tour parties who tend to be there only overnight so that days spent in and around the hotel are wonderfully quiet and peaceful. The staff are very helpful, rooms spacious and the food good.

When reviewing this hotel, it is difficult to look past the stunning view offered from Balestrand across the fjord. I'm not sure I've seen anything quite like it anywhere else. The hotel stay is probably worth it just for that.

The hotel itself is all right. It's a bit dated, with even the "new" (1970s) bit looking a bit creaky. The staff do their best and can't really be faulted. The reception desk was very helpful with things like hiking maps.

Our balcony had an exceptional view and, though it didn't really get dark, the curtains did a good job of keeping out the light overnight. The buffet was good - but overpriced if it's not included in the room price. WiFi worked perfectly well.

Ultimately, I won't be remembering much of the hotel itself, it's the view you go for.

Stayed three nights in the historic part and well worth the extra cost that includes fantastic views over the fjord. The pubic areas are filled with historic artefacts and take some time to view. See if you can find Kaiser Wilhelm II seat? The restaurant evening buffet was top notch one of the best I have had, too much to describe but you won't be disappointed. Breakfast buffet also good. The room (Demi suit) was large with seating area and queen size bed. No safe, no tea/coffee making facilities & no iron but the view from our balcony made up for all that. A couple of cosy seats on the balcony was well used in the evening as the sun stayed late into the evening.
Efficient and quick check in/out. Friendly staff and a head waiter that can speak Welsh. Would I stay here again, yes without a doubt.
