“Excellent base for exploring the fjord region ”
Reviewed 29 June 2014 via mobile

We stayed at the Kviknes Hotel for 5 nights with our 4 month old baby. We loved the hotel and would highly recommend it!! We paid for a superior fjord view room in the new building and it was worth every penny: although it may not have the charm of the old building it was a large room (separate seating area) and our balcony have fjord views in all directions. You can enjoy the old building by having a drink in the beautiful parlours any time of day. Breakfast was very good and you can easily eat enough to avoid an afternoon meal. We had a few lunches and dinners in the Balholm bar and the food was excellent.

Service was exceptional (staff were all kind and extremely helpful. One of the few places outside the US that exceeds American hospitality expectations). Many services are not advertised but the staff are more than happy to accommodate (such as room service).

Only down sides were the slightly dated rooms and not many amenities in the room (mainly no tea/coffee facilities or toiletries provided).

We loved the Kviknes!

I am really torn:there is good and bad.
If you want to experience 'old charm' that this hotel is famous for, under no circumstances allow to put yourself in the ugly and drab addition wing built in 60s or 70s. Hallways and rooms are unattractive and shabby, ppl smoke in their rooms. so you will breathe in all that smog. Rooms have neither safe, nor fridge/bar, nor iron, nor even a coffeemaker! Beds are OK, pillows are horrendous. TV is on the side of the room vs in front of the bed. We had mountain view with a noisy parking lot in foreground

However, the front desk was very nice, they did send a kettle to our room after we asked. They could not find us a room in the old wing since the hotel was full because it was a long holiday and there was a wedding. So before booking, make sure there is no national holiday during your stay.

Even though the hotel is just a minute away from the marina, they send a van to pick up your luggage since the road to the entrance is a bit uphill.
Breakfast was excellent. I would also strongly recommend to try their famous dinner buffet; we loved variety and quality of the food. ,Thank goodness it was served in the old part of the hotel. Coffee on the outside terrace with the fjord view was spoiled by a helicopter that came to pick up a couple of guests.

Room Tip: Request a room in the old part of the hotel!

This hotel is in two parts.
The historic part and a later build East German block.
The first has the reception, bar and restaurant.
It is more a museum with in each room a different design(historic?)

The building where I had my room (862) looks like East German in the late 70's
Room big, a king bed, sofa, desk with chair and a couch for 2.
Balcony with 2 chairs and a table.

Bathroom renovated and is okay.

The room has a great vieuw
No coffee, tea fac.
No minibar
No safe
No airco but you can open door to balcony.
Free WiFi , free parking.

Service okay.
Had no diner in the hotel to busy with groups.

Breakfast is okay.

Garden around hotel is very nice.
At the back of the hotel you can sit at some benches and there the vieuw over the fjord is magnificent.

Room Tip: Ask as high as possible or in the historic part of the hotel.

It's a place with history and you feel there like hundred years ago. It's location is great - directly at the fjord, with a splendid view around! The old building is like a museum with a lot of great paintings and old furniture - it's great to have a cup of coffee there or a drink. The buffet dinner is amazing. It's worth to be there to enjoy it - a lot of seafood, great meat dishes, fantastic desserts, everything according to Norwegian traditions. I'm really looking forward to return.

Room Tip: Rooms on upper floors of the new building have a fantastic, panoramic view. Rooms in the historical...

We loved that this was a historic building that had been in use since the 1870s. It definitely felt old and had charm. The floors were warped. The sink was outside the bathroom. There was no fridge. There was a TV with cable. We stayed for four nights in the old section of the hotel and it pretty much what we had expected. We had a balcony and a view of the fjord which was lovely. The balcony for the bar was just underneath our room so all of the weekend bar noise, invariably, drifted up to our room. But that was the only noise we heard--there was nothing from the other rooms. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful; it seemed like most of them were not Norwegian, though. The express boat to Bergen picks up right outside the hotel which was handy. Yes, it's expensive. But everything in Norway is crazy-bananas expensive.

Very good location, good buffet dinner, nice building.
On the bad side; VERY expensive drinks, wine and beer. Why??? No fridge on the rooms; so no help bringing own beer/wine.
Also only ONE norwegian speaking employer met by myself during the Friday to Sunday stay, but most of the crew was helpful and kind.

I had expected so much more! Walking through the hotel is a treat, seeing the old surroundings downstairs, the old furniture and pictures. And the staff are very helpful in all of your requests, although not too knowledgeable on everything that they should be. The view of the surrounding mountains should be breathtaking, but as you see it with the town just below and the two areas where buses are parked - the view is less than perfect. Except for the spectacular boat ride from Bergen this was a destination I would not return to.

Room Tip: All I can say is the newer section does have an elevator.
