“Unbelievable setting...............”
Reviewed 5 July 2014

My wife and I were here 4 years ago for 3 nights....this year we stayed for 5 nights...there has been a change in the hotel.....the hotel is overrun with busloads of tourists arriving all day...the crush at dinner was unpleasant and the food was toned down....no carving station etc. in addition this is a relatively pricey hotel and one would do better to just eat the breakfast and then find other places to eat....incredible setting with a wonderful staff.....we loved our stay but the hotel has lost some of it's previous ambiance.

The best part of the stay is the view from the balcony. The room is a good size, but a little dated. The breakfast was good also with remarkable views. We had to check out by noon and wait for the express boat, but was able to read down at the "beach". So serene! Customer service was excellent. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view and balcony. You can't go wrong!

The original hotel where you dine and relax is a beautiful building in a stunning location. Behind it is a modern, monolithic hotel block which is where the majority of visitors presumably stay. The rooms in this block are all of a good standard, but it is clear from over-hearing other guests, and from perusing TripAdvisor reviews, that many people were disappointed as they thought they were staying in the chartacterful older building that you see in the brochures. You can of course pay a premium to stay in the old hotel, but we chose not to, so were quite happy with the room we were given. The new block is a right angles to the old, so whichever side you end up staying on, you should still have a balcony overlooking the fjord, if a little obliquely. One thing to look out for is the peculiarly Norwegian habit of having no coffee making facilities in the rooms, which is a particular problem here as they appear to have no fall back for those early risers who are up before breakfast.

The food in the hotel was very good - we had the buffet - and as individual bookers, we got a table around the outside of the huge dining area. The reason for me only giving the establishment four stars however, is that the entire central area (seating several hundred) is mostly given over to coach parties (of which there are many), giving it the feel of a large refectory. The overall operation is very efficient - it has to be to cope with the sheer numbers dining - but it does feel like you are part of some well-oiled military machine. You probably do need to stay here for the location alone, and the food and service are very good, but it isn't the experience many people probably envisage when the book - in short, it's a lovely hotel that to some extent suffers from the large numbers of coach party visitors it entertains.

Part of traveling is lucking out of various things-the perfect table at dinner, a room with a view, unexpected excellent service. Although I had reserved a room in the modern wing (not by choice but because of economics), we were surprisingly given a room in the historic building. We went to the room which turned out to be a corner room suite with a killer fjord view. The room was one of the most beautiful we stayed in on our Norwegian adventure. We had a shared balcony (but no one else ever came outside) and were entertained by an Austin Healey road rally group. Dinner buffet was quite good as well as the breakfast. Just wandering around the various common rooms looking at the furniture and photographs was relaxing. We walked around the charming town at 10:30 PM while it was still light.

Room Tip: Ask for room 128-corner suite with balcony, large bathroom.

We stayed at the Kviknes Hotel for 5 nights with our 4 month old baby. We loved the hotel and would highly recommend it!! We paid for a superior fjord view room in the new building and it was worth every penny: although it may not have the charm of the old building it was a large room (separate seating area) and our balcony have fjord views in all directions. You can enjoy the old building by having a drink in the beautiful parlours any time of day. Breakfast was very good and you can easily eat enough to avoid an afternoon meal. We had a few lunches and dinners in the Balholm bar and the food was excellent.

Service was exceptional (staff were all kind and extremely helpful. One of the few places outside the US that exceeds American hospitality expectations). Many services are not advertised but the staff are more than happy to accommodate (such as room service).

Only down sides were the slightly dated rooms and not many amenities in the room (mainly no tea/coffee facilities or toiletries provided).

We loved the Kviknes!

I am really torn:there is good and bad.
If you want to experience 'old charm' that this hotel is famous for, under no circumstances allow to put yourself in the ugly and drab addition wing built in 60s or 70s. Hallways and rooms are unattractive and shabby, ppl smoke in their rooms. so you will breathe in all that smog. Rooms have neither safe, nor fridge/bar, nor iron, nor even a coffeemaker! Beds are OK, pillows are horrendous. TV is on the side of the room vs in front of the bed. We had mountain view with a noisy parking lot in foreground

However, the front desk was very nice, they did send a kettle to our room after we asked. They could not find us a room in the old wing since the hotel was full because it was a long holiday and there was a wedding. So before booking, make sure there is no national holiday during your stay.

Even though the hotel is just a minute away from the marina, they send a van to pick up your luggage since the road to the entrance is a bit uphill.
Breakfast was excellent. I would also strongly recommend to try their famous dinner buffet; we loved variety and quality of the food. ,Thank goodness it was served in the old part of the hotel. Coffee on the outside terrace with the fjord view was spoiled by a helicopter that came to pick up a couple of guests.

Room Tip: Request a room in the old part of the hotel!

This hotel is in two parts.
The historic part and a later build East German block.
The first has the reception, bar and restaurant.
It is more a museum with in each room a different design(historic?)

The building where I had my room (862) looks like East German in the late 70's
Room big, a king bed, sofa, desk with chair and a couch for 2.
Balcony with 2 chairs and a table.

Bathroom renovated and is okay.

The room has a great vieuw
No coffee, tea fac.
No minibar
No safe
No airco but you can open door to balcony.
Free WiFi , free parking.

Service okay.
Had no diner in the hotel to busy with groups.

Breakfast is okay.

Garden around hotel is very nice.
At the back of the hotel you can sit at some benches and there the vieuw over the fjord is magnificent.

Room Tip: Ask as high as possible or in the historic part of the hotel.
