“Good Value and awesome town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 August 2007

The Midtnes is located in the middle of a picturesque town. The rooms are basic, but very clean and have balconies with partial views of the fjord. No television, but around such beautiful nature, one should not need it.

Good breakfast, but not many restaurants in town.

Midtnes Hotel is a very nice place to stay in Balestrand, which is one of the loveliest little towns in the fjord country. The town itself is very quiet and peaceful, nestled alongside Sognefjord, and a great base for taking ferry rides on the fjords. We stayed here for three nights, and enjoyed our stay, though the hotel is not a five-star hotel by any means. The rooms are small but adequate and clean, but the walls are thin and sound carries from adjoining rooms. The breakfast buffet is quite adequate, but not as good as others we found in other locations. The hotel has a private dock on the fjord where one can bring a bottle of wine and enjoy an evening drink, as well as a lovely outside terrace. And, the hotel does NOT take bus tours, which is a big plus. The hotel was exceptionally good value in a very expensive location.

I have to agree with the others that mentioned that the web site description of the property is misleading.

The Midtnes is certainly a business of convenience, they have a captive market and know it so there is no need to do much for service. Breakfast is served between 8-10 despite there being regular early morning ferries (7:50, 8:05) either to Bergen or to the glacier museum.

The rooms are very utilitarian and exorbinately priced for what you get (but you can say this pretty much about the entire town). That said if you set your expectations correctly and aren't expecting to stay in the beautiful B&B pictured then it is OK.

Beds were basically a thick foam mattress on a board so not terribly comfortable. But it was very quiet and cheaper than the cheap rooms at Kvickne's which appear to be in a equally utilitarian building.

Warning - If you aren't planning to spend more than one night here its quite difficult to see any of the deeper sites because of the boat schedules. If it's just one night I would suggest to hike around once you get there and take the early boat out as the town itself can easily be walked in an hour or so.

Balestrand is a scenic town indeed, but really quiet. Make sure you have your dinner early, I didn't so I had to wait for the breakfast because there are no restraurants or fast food joints in this town.
At breakfast they had named seats, which I found a little silly. I woke up early (because I was hungry!), and I was placed to sit next to the only other person who had got up early. The hotel has nice feel to it. Unfortunately I couldn't get fjord view, though I had been promised one upon reservation.

I think Balestrand and this small hotel is worth a visit.

We stayed in Midtnes Hotel in August. I suppose this whole review is influenced by the fact that we thought we were staying in a different hotel.... if you look at their website there is a picture of a lovely wooden building - we booked that with a "balcony and fjord view". So according to us, as reflected in the photo, we were staying in an old white wooden building in one of the balcony rooms (see lovely looking balconies in photos on hotel website). When we arrived in Balestrand and walked to the hotel (about a 4 minute walk from the ferry stop) we saw an incredibly ugly Communist looking building and wondered how planning permission could have got behind the lovely white wooden old hotel. As we walked closer we realised that the entrance to the hotel was in through this building. Still, being the naive people we are, we thought we'd stay in the old building. We booked in, seemingly by the room cleaner, and said we had a balcony room with a fjord view and asked if that was in the old building. She said the old building was for family only (apart from the breakfast room). She assigned us our room, just before we left the owner arrived, saw the room she assigned us and changed our room. Thank God!! If we had stayed in the room she assigned the view would have been of the back of the lovely old building we wanted to stay in!
This part of the hotel is somewhat institution like- pure 1960-70's architecture with no charm whatsoever. Our room (on the 3rd floor) did have an amazing view of the fjord. The beds were twin beds stuck together, with no pillow cases for some reason. The room was clean when we arrived, however we stayed for a week and it was never cleaned in all that time. The bed was "made" one day (if you could call it that) but the bathroom was never cleaned in a week, we were hill walking and bringing in dust etc and the floor was never swept etc. The room is extremely basic. The bathroom is ok, its a wet room with a shower that wets all the rest of the bathroom when you have a shower. There was a drain on the floor that stank so we had to cover it up.

Good things- the breakfast was very good with a large variety. Seating is assigned and once or twice we were required to share our table with other assigned people.
The owner is very helpful if you ask him things and did help us out renting a car and also dropping us to the ferry.
It is much cheaper than Kviknes hotel(we know because we tried to change on our first night).
There is a lovely stave church literally on the door step.

We wouldn't stay there again though by choice. We do feel misled because the website makes it appear you'll be staying in this lovely old wooden hotel, and instead you stay in this ugly charmless building- I wonder how many people have been similarly misled?
Balestrand is a nice village but quite boring. There are few restaurants apart from the ones that sell cafe type food. We did the buffet meal thing in Kviknes one night which we really enjoyed. If I was staying in Balestand again (which I wouldn't unless passing through) I'd stay in Kviknes hotel.

One of the more affordable (for Norway) accomodations in Balestrand. A pleasant experience overall, breakfast buffet was good quality and variety (cold cuts, cheeses, cereals, breads, pickled herring, plus periodically refreshed hot dishes). Pay by the hour internet access via a shared computer. Jon the owner was very helpful, including picking us up and dropping us off at the boat terminal on arrival/departure (although the property is very close by, it's still a nice touch when one has luggage).

A caveat: many reviews will recommend paying extra for the balcony view, be aware that not all such views are equal, some of them are much more obstructed than others. The photo on the website is slightly misleading -- many of the balcony rooms are not in the white building, but in the beige one (left in the photo). That said, the overall view _is_ lovely, but then the entire region seems to be like that.

We stayed in this hotel recently it was comfortable the rooms simple, breakfast plentiful and well presented, usual Norwegian breakfast (but no toast for us British)
We booked through Fjord pass which was reasonable, however when Fjord pass was slow to get back to me with the booking I emailed the hotel for a price which was a lot more expensive than the price from Fjord pass, I waited for the Fjord pass booking to come through, so I think the pass is well worth it especially if you are booking a few hotels while in Norway like we did.
Balestrand is a charming little place only stayed one night a stop over on our way back to Bergen, there is a small cafe with seating outside, we had a coffee which was not so good, we didn't fancy eating there that evening, we went to the Kviknes Hotel they serve food in the bar which was very good the menu changes at 6pm, we enjoyed the food there, we ate there because we could choose what we wanted in the Midtnes hotel they only had a set menu which wasn't shown to us when we asked at reception what was for dinner.
Overall the Midtnes was good for the price that we paid, having said that the price which was given to me by email by the hotel was expensive, (not far behind the price of the Kviknes Hotel if this was booked with the pass), if you decide to book yourself into this hotel double check their prices first.
