“Great place to stay”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

This is a great family-run hotel with good service, clean rooms and reasonable rates in a spectacular setting. Unni Marie, a Balestrand native, can serve up excellent advice on Balestrand and the Sognefjord region. Delicious breakfast!

As others have noted, this hotel does not provide luxury accommodation. It's basic, yes, but it's clean, the beds are comfortable, and it has its own charm. The lounge area is actually really nice -- very comfortable place to sit and read or relax with a glass of wine. I followed advice from this site and booked a room with a balcony and fjord view: definitely worth the little extra money as we were rewarded on our second night with a double rainbow over the fjord! It was gorgeous.

The hotel owners (especially Uni-Marie) are very helpful with respect to providing information about sights, ferry times, and the area in general.

The breakfast is not fancy, but it's tasty and plentiful.

Balestrand is idyllic: peaceful, quiet, quaint. We stayed two nights and I wish we'd had more time there. We had a car and so were able to explore the surrounding area with some day trips. I recommend this, but it would also have been nice to take some hikes in and around Balestrand, which we did not have time to do.

Room Tip: Get a fjord view.

Hotel Balestrand is in the ideal setting--The view from the hotel is amazing. The family-run hotel offers a lovely sitting area with fjord view as well as lawn chairs in front. Unnimarie, her husband, and daughters run the hotel very efficiently. I think it is the best place to stay in Balestrand. If you plan to arrive by express boat, email the hotel, and someone will be waiting to drive your luggage to the hotel from the dock. It is several blocks uphill to the hotel. If I ever had the chance to return, I would do so without hesitation.

Room Tip: We were in a downstairs room on the end facing the mountain. It had a nice patio with two comfortabl...

The hotel at first may not look promising, but soon you will see why the dated decor is part of its charm. It may feel like you are back in your 70s childhood, but that is also why it feels like you are part of a family. The entire hotel is run by a family - husband, wife, daughters. They even eat at the hotel breakfast room. They are always there to help and give advice, and so helpful. The rooms are very clean, and the beds comfortable, but what you cannot beat is the amazing view! Our balcony had the most amazing view of the Sognefjord, and we just enjoyed spending time out there looking at the water. The location was good, close enough to walk to town, but peaceful. The hotel has a wide lawn on the fjord, where we played with our son, and watched the baby seagull.

Balestrand doesn't have a lot going on, only a few restaurants, and a few things to do. If you love to hike, you're in luck. However, I found that made it a relaxing place to visit. We didn't feel any stress or "FOMO" (fear of missing out) - you can just relax, enjoy the peace of this beautiful place.

I would also like to state that the modest Hotel Balestrand has the best shower we experienced in all of Norway. It was the only hotel where I could take a proper shower!

Breakfast was limited in selection, but very good quality. We enjoyed eating breakfast here more than any other place in Norway.

Room Tip: definitely "splurge" (it isn't much more) for a fjord-facing balcony room.

We got a room with balcony that faces the fjord. And the view is to die for!! This is the best view we've had in a hotel. The breakfast was modest but sufficient. Owner provides transport to and from the harbor.

Price wise it looks cheap but Compared to the other hotels in the area, it is high for what you receive. The family owned hotel is nice but UnniMarie may need the money for daughters private college. Very helpful upon check-in.

Stayed one night in this delightful hotel in a lovely little town
We asked and paid for a fjord room which had a lovely balcony on the 4th floor and fantastic views
It was lovely weather when we were there and could open the door to the balcony for fresh air
Beds very comfy with nice pillows and duvets
Bathroom had a bath which was great to soak in after a long day sightseeing in Norway
Also had a shower all very clean and enough room
We like our early morning cuppa and when I asked about this the receptionist (owners daughter) gave me a kettle and said take tea coffee and cups and milk to room if I wish
Which was great
They also have a lift which is great when you have suitcases as lots of old hotels and b and bs you have to carry up stairs
The breakfast was very nice usual things plus hot boiled eggs and as mentioned earlier no fresh fruit

Room Tip: Fjord room was lovely
