“Balestrand Hotel”

Balestrand Hotel was perfect for our stay in the Sognefjord area. The room and balcony were very nice, clean and well maintained. The fjord view from the balcony was awesome. We stayed in the hotel while that region was going through an unusual hot spell, the stay was very comfortable even though the hotel did not have AC in the rooms. We really enjoyed the tranquil atmosphere of the hotel and area. The hotel served an excellent breakfast and the harbor was just a few minutes walk away.
Personally, the thing that impressed me most was the assistance I received from the Owners and Staff. Ms Unni-Marie went out of her way to provide guidance and assistance from the time I started to think about the trip to the time I stayed at the hotel. Her tips came in really handy before and during the trip.
I would go back there any time.

Room Tip: Awesome fjord view from fjord facing room.

As a part of the package deal we've stayed for three nights at the Balestrand Hotel. We were lucky to have a room with 'fjordview'. Which delivered an amazing and overwhelming experience. The hotel itself was straightforward , run by a Norwegian/Californian family. The hosts were very friendly and straightforward. The services were ok although the breakfast was quite simple. And for a lunch or dinner you had to go elsewere. I'll bear this Californian dream at the Sognefjord forever in my mind.

Most important:

The owners helped us with our travel plans. They spent a good hour on the phones for us getting our boat trips straightened out, and it was my error that had caused the original problem. These people will bend over backwards to help you.

Also...if you are taking boats with tight deadlines, they will pickup and drop off your suitcases at the dock so you can just grab your stuff and go. Awesome service!

A superb full breakfast is included with the room, and you get all sorts of stuff...not just rolls and coffee.

Overview:

This was a reasonably priced hotel (for Norway), and it was much less expensive than the fancy place about 200 yards away. We saved a bunch by not getting a fjord view (all we did was sleep there one night) and walking around to the other side terrace to view the fjord. This hotel did not have AC (to my knowledge, you won't get AC in Norway unless you spend really big bucks, and you rarely need it) and it was unseasonably hot, so the owners loaned us a fan. I spoke to others in a more expensive local hotel, and they roasted and didn't get fans.

Highly recommended.

This hotel was perfect for our stay in the Sognefjord area. It had some charm and character, the room (and especially the bathroom) was immaculate, and the service was very good.
Long before we arrived Unni-marie answered questions to help us plan our travel once we left. Once there, we learned she was a wealth of knowledge about the town, the fjords, the local services and even the tours.
Our room was on the back, without a fjord view, but luckily for us on the first floor so we had a little private patio to sit on. If we wanted to gaze on the fjord we had only to walk to the sitting room, the front patio, or the lawn across the street.
We stayed three nights which gave us a nice amount of time to explore the town, take some day trips and relax and enjoy the tranquility.

Room Tip: If not going with the fjord view, ask for one of the rooms with the little patio.

We enjoyed our stay at Balestrand Hotel very much. The small hotel is family owned - only open in the summer when the family comes over from California. We paid extra for the fjordside room and I was so glad we did. Our view was so pretty and it was wonderful to have a balcony to relax on. The hotel was clean, the breakfast was excellent and the hosts were helpful and friendly. They even drive your bags to and from the ferry stop. We stayed two nights and I would have happily stayed longer!
Balestrand is a small, quiet town. Just three hotels, three restaurants, two markets, a small aquarium with bakery inside, a place to rent bicycles. Not much there and that was the beauty of it! Quiet, peaceful, relaxing and beautiful.

Room Tip: Fjordside rooms are great and have balconies.

Pros:
- we got off the boat from Flam and our luggage was taken directly to the hotel (pleasant surprise!); our walk to the hotel was five minutes
- checkin was fast, friendly and efficient
- dinner menus of local restaurants were in the lobby which helped us in making dinner decisions
- after dinner, we could sit on chairs overlooking the water and have a beer
- we had a room at the back of the hotel so very little outside noise
- comfy beds

Cons (more related to the physical structure of the hotel and not a reflection on the great staff)
- bathroom shower is part of the bathroom: there is a shower curtain but that's it so the water gets under the sink
- really really hot water: it would be very easy to scald yourself so be really careful
-quirky door system: there are two! One is your regular door to the hallway with a lock on it, etc; but, there is another one on the same doorframe inside the door with no lock (you have to go through this one first and then through the regular one to get into the hallway); I went inside and shut the first door and spent a few minutes trying to figure out how to lock the darn thing; it was only then that I saw the second door with the look on it - duh!
- the walls are a bit on the thin side and you can hear noises from other rooms; we were lucky in that we had fairly quiet neighbours
- price is good

Overall, I would stay here again.

My wife & I recently stayed at the Balestrand Hotel for unfortunately only 1 night! The community is very quiet and located on an extremely beautiful section of the Sognefjord. Our 2nd floor balcony room with an unbelievable view of the Fjord made us never want to leave and was well worth the small upcharge. The owners and their daughters made you feel very welcome and comfortable from them originally meeting us at the Ferry to carry our luggage to the hotel, to their personalized service at the nice included breakfast.

This hotel, scenery and location was a highlight of our 3 week visit to the Baltic countries and we really want to return here badly. You can't go wrong staying here, for as long as you can!
