Convento de Belmonte was by far the best pousada of the six we've known so far. The building is not as grand as other monasteries converted into hotels, but that is precisely what makes it so special. The location is great, only a 3 minute drive from the centre of Belmonte, which has plenty to see - castle, museums, Roman ruins, etc. Don't expect it to be bustling with people at night, it's not a very big town. The pousada has a private car park, and is right in the middle of a walled forest. The communal areas are comfortable, nicely decorated and quite a few to chose from, so you'll aways find a quiet room to catch up with your reading. Staff always made sure the woodburners were fully operational, and the temperature was simply lovely. During our stay in that part of the world we did quite a lot of walking and sightseeing, and after a whole day facing the elements up in the serra, we always looked forward to coming back to the pousada for a warm drink by the woodburner. We felt right at home and we were so so sorry to leave. Breakfast was the best of all the pousadas we visited (the bread was simply gorgeous!), with good quality, varied food. The staff could not have been friendlier. At our request one of the receptionists phone the people up in Torre (Serra) to find out if we could drive up there. We really appreciate having been treated so nicely. Our bedroom was Frei Octávio just down the corridor, which was great for privacy. The view was stunning and all the bedrooms in that part of the pousada had their own balcony with table and chairs. Although the AC worked very well, we add two extra heaters at our disposal. The pousada is great if you wish to visit Serra da Estrela - it is strategically placed for those wishing to see Covilha, Sortelha (highly recommend a visit here), Valhelhas, Manteigas, and of course Belmonte. There are not that many pousadas we'd like to go back to, but this is definitely one of them. We did not have dinner at the pousada, as we simply cannot afford haute-cuisine, but the reviews we read from other customers in the visitor's book were all very complimentary, and the menu looked very nice.

Room Tip: Chose room Frei Octávio if you're looking for more privacy. The woods are right next to the balc...

After a long day's touring we arrived at the Belmonte Pousada, to be greeted by very pleasant staff.
The public areas are very tasteful, giving an ambiance of serenity. (Many interior designers could take a few lessons from this hotel!).

Spend time walking in the various lounges, sitting rooms etc. The gardens are large.
The valley below sparkles at night with lights from the various villages and homesteads in the distance. In the morning a mist engulfs the hotel and valley, until it lifted at breakfast time
The dining room is 'grand' where we had our best meal in Portugal, and must commend the waiter too.
The breakfast room is also a delight

Spoil yourselves, stay here for a few days and relax. An additional bonus is the reasonble price of both the hotel and our diner.

This was our third time at Belmonte - we drive from France to Lisbon, so its a great place to rest and see the countryside.
We have Frey Pedro - a large room (great for families, and easily large enough for five) it has an enormous balcony, though not the best view.
The restaurant is great and the service superb - our kids are learning portuguese and the staff loved it & encouraged them wonderfully.
Breakfasts are very good too.
There are plenty of beautiful mountaintop towns to visit - the landscape is fantastic.
Top tip: ring direct to get the best price.

Unfortunately, we visited on business and we're not able to fully enjoy this hotel, but it really impressed us on our short visit. Breathtaking view, great breakfast, friendly staff, big/clean/comfortable rooms and beautifully designed hotel. On our 12 days business trip around Europe, this was by far the best value! Nothing but praise for this hotel! I would imagine a weekend here would be incredibly relaxing :)

We've stayed at the Pousada, Belmonte 6 times now, on our return trips from the Algarve to the UK. The hotel is in a stunning location overlooking a valley and the Serra de Estrella mountains. Although at the end of a country lane, it is well sign-posted and easy to find. The staff are always very welcoming and the decor is rustic, but done by someone with a great eye for detail. It is very peaceful at night. We have only eaten in the restaurant once and thought the food was of a high standard. Normally, we have a simple bar meal (eg a toasted sandwich) and a glass of wine on the terrace and watch the sun go down behind the mountains. Breakfast is typical of the Pousada hotels and is probably its weakness if you like a comprehensive menu. It's a great place to stay if you want to explore the natural park of the Serra de Estrella.

Room Tip: All rooms have good views, the ones on the lower floor have larger terraces/balconies.

This was just an overnight stop for us en route from Algarve to Bilbao, but what a delightful surprise, though it takes a bit of finding around wibbly wobbly roads! Charming lady welcomed us and they made us a proper pot of tea - it was 4 o'clock and we are English! Breathtaking view from bedroom (and elsewhere around the hotel) and all manor of little nooks and crannies to explore.
I'm a bit surprised at the slightly negative tone of some of the restaurant reviews as we had a superb dinner, though it was quite expensive. Vowed we'd have a pizza the next night!
Highly recommended hotel in a beautiful area.

Room Tip: I think all rooms overlook the valley, but, if not, ensure you book one that does.

The Pousada is lovingly restored with lots of interesting corners and the views across the valley are beautiful, but the restaurant is overpriced and Belmonte itself has nothing worth making a detour for. The breakfast was disappointing with only canned fruit but the staff are lovely and friendly.
