Convento de Belmonte was by far the best pousada of the six we've known so far. The building is not as grand as other monasteries converted into hotels, but that is precisely what makes it so special. The location is great, only a 3 minute drive from the centre of Belmonte, which has plenty to see - castle, museums, Roman ruins, etc. Don't expect it to be bustling with people at night, it's not a very big town. The pousada has a private car park, and is right in the middle of a walled forest. The communal areas are comfortable, nicely decorated and quite a few to chose from, so you'll aways find a quiet room to catch up with your reading. Staff always made sure the woodburners were fully operational, and the temperature was simply lovely. During our stay in that part of the world we did quite a lot of walking and sightseeing, and after a whole day facing the elements up in the serra, we always looked forward to coming back to the pousada for a warm drink by the woodburner. We felt right at home and we were so so sorry to leave. Breakfast was the best of all the pousadas we visited (the bread was simply gorgeous!), with good quality, varied food. The staff could not have been friendlier. At our request one of the receptionists phone the people up in Torre (Serra) to find out if we could drive up there. We really appreciate having been treated so nicely. Our bedroom was Frei Octávio just down the corridor, which was great for privacy. The view was stunning and all the bedrooms in that part of the pousada had their own balcony with table and chairs. Although the AC worked very well, we add two extra heaters at our disposal. The pousada is great if you wish to visit Serra da Estrela - it is strategically placed for those wishing to see Covilha, Sortelha (highly recommend a visit here), Valhelhas, Manteigas, and of course Belmonte. There are not that many pousadas we'd like to go back to, but this is definitely one of them. We did not have dinner at the pousada, as we simply cannot afford haute-cuisine, but the reviews we read from other customers in the visitor's book were all very complimentary, and the menu looked very nice.
