“Great Hotel”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

I love the location of this hotel. It is right next to the Peneda Sanctuary & has a gushing waterfall behind it. The staff is very friendly, especially Katrina, & the restaurant food is excellent. They apparently have a new chef & the presentation of the food, as well as the taste, is great. We ate at the hotel the 2 nights we were there. There are walks starting close to the hotel as well as 15 mins drive away. The hotel room itself is a little dated & lack the usual amenities but could easily be requested through the front desk. The hotel also has a nice comfortable lounge with sofas & tv for hotel guests.

We stayed at this Hotel 2 nights and it was wonderful! Surrounded by mountains and beautiful nature, it is very well located to visit Gerês National Park. The hotel is the ideal place to rest after long walks in the mountains.
The restaurant is incredible with traditional portuguese food, but with a modern twist.
Thanks to all the staff that is incredible friendly, and professional.

I can't recommend this place highly enough, it has been one of the highlights of the 5 week trip I'm currently doing. If you feel the need to get away from it all, get back to nature, do some hiking or just look at stunning scenery from the car - but you don't want to 'rough it' - this is the place.

The experience starts with the mountain roads that offer breath-taking scenery and plenty of horses, long-horned cows and goats on the road to remind you that you are a long way from city hustle and bustle. My father was worried that I had booked us in to stay in a goat shed, but when you turn that final corner and see the hotel, it's quite a surprise!

The drive is absolutely worth it, the hotel has been beautifully restored on the outside and is very modern on the inside. Yes, there is no air-conditioning in the room, but with the windows thrown open for the clean mountain air it was fine. There is a waterfall that runs behind and then underneath the hotel and while it is stunning, it may make you wish you had earplugs when it's in full force.

The rooms are large and have very modern, but natural decor, use of timber prevents it from feeling sterile. The whole hotel feels comfortable, clean and welcoming. The lounge area is great on the days when you need to be indoors: fireplace, comfy chairs and sofas, books, games and home theatre style entertainment area.

There is very little/no mobile reception in the area (hooray) but there is free fast wifi throughout the hotel that works brilliantly.

The service we had from all the guys was fantastic, so friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet was great with a wide selection to suit everyone and everything was very fresh. We also had lunch and dinner in the restaurant on both days and was very impressed with the food. Good Portuguese food that is delicious, filling and unpretentious. I think the kitchen issues that a previous reviewer mentioned have definitely been fixed! The pork secretos (?) were so good I had to have it twice. Don't get me wrong - this isn't the sort of place that you have to dress up for dinner, but it is good solid food in a beautiful dining room with awesome views.

Also, the wine list is excellent - I had a bottle of white that was equal to the best sav blanc I've ever had (but a heck of a lot cheaper).

I stay in a lot of hotels (frequent stayer - novice reviewer) and I can't believe this hotel is only rated three stars officially, many "five star" hotels aren't a patch on this place. The value for money was incredible.

The hotel is located right next to the Peneda Sanctuary, inside the Peneda-Gerês National park.
It has very nice, comfortable and clean rooms, well furbished and heated, with a great view of the scenario.
We stayed for 2 nights and quite enjoyed the place. near by there are marked tracks and places to do climbing.
People at the hotel and around it were very friendly and helpful and it is near quite a few attractions to people who enjoy the outdoors.
There is no ATM machine, but the Soajo village does have one and, is not far (by car).
It's a great place to rest and walk in an amazing natural scenario.
I would go back!

What a beautiful valley this hotel is located in! Real Portugal with the long-horned cows and wild horse by the side of the road. The hotel is a very friendly place with really helpful staff. We decided to eat in the hotel restaurant and it was very nice! Really tasty steak and a fantastic Chocolate Mousse to finish with. The lounge upstairs has a lovely cozy fireplace and you have a big sofa in front to curl up in. What about the price too! A great bargain as the rooms are simple but clean and with an excellent bathroom. You get an old-style key which just adds a bit more romance to the trip. I really liked this place and if you´re into climbing and all that activity stuff it would be a great base. It really is an oasis of tranquility in our stressful world!

The hotel is situated amidst a magnificent valley, and every morning, as the sun lights it up, it feels like a little miracle. The solemn and soothing sounds of the waterfall above and underneath the hotel may wash away all the troubles of the stressful world outside the valley.
The views are simply breathtaking, the hikes are a must.

I'd like to point out some practical considerations to be had: in the low season, there is not much of a choice of places to eat, apart from a couple of cafes (closed at 7 pm) and the hotel restaurant. So bear this in mind if you look for variety. In that case, you wouldn't want to look at the hotel's breakfast, to be honest. Another restaurant opens in the village only for the high season. Alternatively, you may want to try the restaurants in Castro Laboreiro (17 km away).
Please make sure you have some extra cash in your purse and plenty of petrol in your car, since there are no ATMs or petrol stations nearby. No food shops either.

So plan ahead and enjoy your peaceful stay at this hidden-away place.

Peneda Hotel is the perfect place to stay away from the big cities rush and be in the middle of a incredible natural park. The rooms are simple, clean and not to small. The sound isolation between rooms could be better, unfortunately it's something I experience more and more nowadays. There's no mobile phones coverage but the internet is very fast, with extraordinary coverage throughout the hotel rooms and other areas, and it's free! The only option for food is the Hotel restaurant, which is good and not very expensive. However, you can take a 15min drive to Castro Laboreiro, a small village with plenty of options. I highly recommend to visit Castro Laboreiro's small castle, it's a 25min climb but the view from there is breathtaking.
