I should qualify that title by saying 'this is the place to stay in Hondarribia if you can't afford the Parador." We stopped into the parador and looked around and it is gorgeous. That wasn't within our budget for this part of the trip, but Hotel San Nikolas pleased us in every way. The façade of the hotel is incredibly charming - painted brightly with balconies on all of the sea facing rooms and potted plants hanging. The value for the price is ridiculously good for the view and the location. The room itself was quite sufficient, with more space than a lot of other pricier places we stayed in Spain. Absolutely, absolutely, go for the sea view, as you look out across the square and the old parador. The reception staff were all very helpful and the town has a lot to offer in terms of dining and places of historical and cultural interest. We stayed on a Saturday night and on Sunday morning there was a Basque festival taking place where a bunch of children from the town were dressed in costume and marching through the streets with a band. They finally landed at the square just in front of Hotel San Nikolas and we ran up to our balcony to get a picture perfect view of their performances. Loved it all!
