“An okay meal”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 April 2014

3 of us had sunday lunch here this weekend

we each had a different meat - one lamb, one pork and the other beef - the highlight was definately the vegetables served with the meal. There were at least half a dozen different vegetables and they were all fresh and tasy. The meats were okay but nothing special but then at £8.95 a plate one's expectations should not be too high. I would go again but it would not be my first choice.

“Friendly pub in Budleigh Salterton”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 March 2014 via mobile

Initially called in for a beer as recommended in the good beer guide and the beer (Dartmoor Jail Ale) was very well presented and very tasty.

Decided to have a spot of lunch and had a sausage and bacon panini which was cooked to order and was well worth the wait.

The staff were friendly and welcoming - the pub is a bit dated but don't let that put you off.

“Should do so much better”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 January 2014

We have been visiting the Salterton Arms for many years with elderly, local parents. The landlord has changed in recent months but sadly the service and food has not improved one iota. I have always found service basic, no welcome or recognition shown despite frequent visits, food bland, at best. Why have crab on your menu when it never appears available? Have been requesting crab sandwich or salad for years, but have never yet had it! The fishermen are a couple of hundred yards away. Since the new landlord has taken over a TV has been installed upstairs, in what had been a fairly quiet eating area. No more. It is disappointing that a town the size of Budleigh has this as its main public house. Certainly not an attraction for the area. Could do so much better.

“Not the best at all”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 December 2013

We arrived cold after a walk on the front with wind howling around on a very stormy evening at 5.15pm. Welcome at the bar was great as was the warmth and olde-worlde feel. Then the owner/manager?? came to tell us the seat in the window was reserved but that we could still sit there but had to be away as the bookers were arriving for a 7.30 start. As we wished to dine and service did not commence until 6.00 we moved to another table, sat down, only to be approached again, 'that is reserved', bringing a reservation sticker with him!! We ended up on a table right next to the toilets, were given the menu and told chef was there so we could order early. Dining was quick, not particularly pleasant and I have never ever had chips that were totally but totally tasteless. We were out by 6.15 and wished we had never gone there. TIP - be a regular and book - but don't bother to dine.
