“A Chip of the block 😄”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2013 via mobile

Called in here at 8.50pm with my wife hoping for a takeaway, then noticed the resturant was pretty empty so settled in and ordered possibly the best lemon sole in the county! Chips were good and fish excellent. Smashing service from Simon the manager(?) very chatty with time to talk about the history of the plaice- I mean place.
Would recommend and will be calling in next time we are passing.

“Great”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 May 2013

I arrived in Budleigh at 8.30 on a Saturday evening during a bank holiday weekend. All of the pubs had stopped serving food by this time!!! Thankfully Premier Cafe was still open. I ordered Cod and chips which was delicious. The fish was cooked to order and was really fresh and very tasty. My dog enjoyed the extra 'been there too long' piece of fish that the proprietor put in a bag for her as it was almost closing time. Lovely service. Thank you! :-D

“Overrated”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 May 2013

Visited for the first time some months ago to meet a lady complaining that she had driven 15 miles to experience their "Award Winning" F&C. She said that it was a waste of petrol and at that stage we should have walked out before ordering.
The fish was small, the chips were terrible and the man frying said that his chip machine had broken down. Not really an excuse.
We were in Budleigh last week and though that we would give it a try again. This was another mistake. There were only a couple of people in there but the service was very slow, the cafe had no atmosphere and £8.20 was extortionate for a small piece of cod and a few overcooked chips that certainly would not win an award with us.
Finally when I went to pay there was a man complaining about his bill.
This was not a good experience.

“Good but not Outstanding”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 May 2013

To use current educational parlance the Premier Cafe is Good but not Outstanding. The fish is fresh and freshly cooked, the batter is reasonably tasty (which you can't always say) and the chips are well-cooked and fairly crispy - which again you can't always say. So why is it not Outstanding? Simple, because the best fish and chips are cooked in beef dripping - sorry vegetarians, but it's true. Why else does Rick Stein's expensive chippy on Padstow quay cook in it? Palm oil or any other frying medium automatically rules out five-stars, I reckon.
But don't get me wrong, for the south of England the Premier is definitely a cut above the average.

“Excellent in every way.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2013

My wife and I always visit the Premier Cafe when we are in Budleigh (at least once a year for the jazz festival - if you like jazz try it). We have never been disappointed - the food is excellent, the service friendly and accomodating. On our most recent visit we arrived as the cafe was closing, but we were made welcome, and served and treated like welcome customers.
