This was the second visit to G's and as before, the building, ambiance and food were all very good but the service was pretty disappointing. The staff just don't seem to be very interested in the customers and, with so many places to go in that area, the service needs to be friendly, attentive and knowledgeable to compete.
There was a mistake on our bill and even when rectified, the cost was about £45 per head which was a bit steep when we had only had a couple of glasses of wine each and not all of us had 3 courses...we didn't leave a tip which is extremely unusual for us but, as I've said, the service was not good enough for this kind of place.

We selected G’s as the venue for our wedding reception having eaten there many times and after our original venue cancelled on us. And I’m really glad they did!

After discussing the initial details with G himself right through to the day itself, the service we received couldn’t have been better.

The restaurant itself is set in the Old Naval Bakery and features many of the original ovens which give the place an historical theme. Simply decorated with a few candles, G’s looks stunning and provided us with an ideal wedding location. We had many a discussion with their wedding co-ordinator Sam and were invited down to sample the food and drinks weeks before the event. This reassured us that the food and drink would be superb on the day and I’m happy to report that they were. Sam was also very helpful when it came to organising table layouts and had lots of helpful hints and tips to get the best out of the space.

G’s had no problems with us bringing in a band for the occasion and indeed liaised with them directly to iron out the details for the evening. They also repeated this with the chocolate fountain company. When we informed them that we had hired a Rolls Royce and an old London Double Decker bus G’s did their upmost to ensure that we could get both vehicles down onto the front and outside the building (a residential area). This truly made our day and we got some wonderful photos outside with the bus.

Having booked the whole place out for the afternoon G’s opened early that morning to allow us to decorate and drop cakes off etc … where we were aided by the staff and chefs.

All in all we couldn’t have asked for a better reception, the food was great, the drink was plentiful, the place looked great, and the staff were more than attentive.

Thoroughly recommended. Looking back I’m thrilled our original venue cancelled!!!

We attended G’s Restaurant for a belated birthday celebration; having visited G’s on several occasions we thought the night would be a success. How wrong we were, on entering the establishment we were hit by how cold the place was, this should have been our warning sign to leave. After a pre-dinner drink we sat at the table on the belief being away from the main entrance we would warm up, in fact it was colder and this resulted in both the female guests wearing scarfs.
The first course turned up and this was the pigeon dish, which was served totally cold and also on an extremely cold plate, however the benefit of the doubt was given as this could have been the style.
The main courses were served and this included the steak and pork belly choices. The Chips served with the steak were totally burnt and extremely unpleasant to eat. The pork dish was extremely poor, not cooked correctly and two pieces of the meet still had some sort of bone still attached. The Lamb Shank dish was covered in an extremely thick and strong sauce; this resulted in the lamb taste being totally masked.
One guest decided to have pudding and this was the crème Brule choice. This turned up resembling a small dish of single cream with a sprinkling of sugar placed on top.
G’s is set in a modern location with excellent views of Portsmouth Harbour and the building it’s self is full of history.
It’s a total shame the meal was spoilt with extremely poor cooking and service and I felt upset when the final bill was presented as this was a total waste of money. And for those reasons I would not recommend a visit to G’s.
