“Great!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2013

Just spent four days here - 2 couples. Everything was beautifully clean and comfortable. The owners and their cheery little waitress were most welcoming and accommodating. We enjoyed delicious breakfasts - the bacon was especially good - and super evening meals. The dining room is very elegant and comfortable with lovely views and the bar full of old world charm and interesting characters. Close to Hay on Wye and in striking distance of Builth Wells, we enjoyed exploring the beautiful countryside around.

Top quality in every respect. Owners Paul and Gerry bent over backwards to ensure that our stay was special, They more than achieved It. Service and quality was the very best. The welcome and food was outstanding. Thank you both very much. Nick and Diana.

The charm is with the building and surroundings. The owners are very pleasant and welcoming. To make a success of this place it needs to be taken more seriously. This was apparently the place to go to years ago and it needs building back up again.....lets hope these two can do it.

We stayed at this inn for 1 night in May 2013 for the Hay-On-Wye festival.

I was very disappointed with our reception - The Landlord was quite ignorant to the point of rudeness (<-- I've cut that from a paragraph to a sentence :P)

The building is gorgeous, and the room was very comfortable. It is a nice walk into Hay on Wye, but close enough for a taxi, if you need one.

Very hearty breakfast, with excellent locally sourced food and good service.

The landlord gave us more attention in the morning, and spared a few minutes to ask why he hadn't seen more of us. Perhaps he was just busy the night before ... or maybe we didn't spend enough in the bar.

Wouldn't go back for the price.

We booked a late lunch and were greeted by a very helpful waitress who took our order immediately. We were seated in a very pleasant area with a lovely view of the garden. The food was delicious and nothing was too much trouble for the attentive staff. Will be recommending to others.

My partners grandparents booked a table at the Rhydspence for a family get together, the table was booked for 1.15pm and we were still waiting for our mains at 2.30pm. The starter I had was breaded brie and it was dry and looked as though it was cooked several times before I recieved it all of the other starter looked fine think I made a wrong choice, when the mains turned up the beef was very overcooked to the point where the owner came and apoligised with a bottle of wine as the butcher had given her tough beef! The staff seemed dis-jointed there didn't appear to be any system in place, they came and took two empty plates from the table before the whole table had finished and one waiter kept saying excellent and sticking his thumbs up it seems to me that they just don't know what they're doing service is so important and not that hard to get right.

The Inn is under new management, they have been in for 11 months. The staff are all very welcoming and polite. Nothing is too much trouble. Paul and Gerry go out of their way to ensure their guests are well looked after but they respect their guests' privacy. Paul has a dry sense of humour and is willing to have a chat if that is what you want. Unlike a stay in a hotel you are made to feel included even by the locals who use the bar.
The bar is all you could expect from a building of such age, with a roaring fire, genuinely ancient oak beams and an excellent stock of spirits and a Hereford ale. Glorious!
The rooms are clean and well appointed with comforatble beds and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside, the en suite does not have a separate shower but instead you have a good sized bath with a hand-held shower. Fluffy towels and complementary toiletries are provided.
The food, prepared by Geraldine the landlady, is home cooked and locally sourced. The only problem we had with the breakfasts was the amount, a 'full english' is likely to defeat most people except perhaps for a 14 year old with hollow legs! The bacon is local and took me back to my youth when bacon did not shrink, it was excellent. We had an excellent evening meal.
We stayed here when visiting the Hay Festival, it took only 7 minutes to drive to the Festival car park.
This has to be one of the most civilized and enjoyable stays we have had in a hotel or inn.
We hope to be able to stay next year, if you want a memorable stay in a stunning part of the country I believe you would find it very hard to improve on the Rhydspence Inn.
