One of our most anticipated stops in our recent trip through England and Scotland was the tiny town of Haltwhistle. We planned two nights there in order to visit various sites along Hadrian's wall. Based on reviews from Trip Advisor we picked the Ashcroft Guest House as our lodging. It was a perfect choice for our stay in the area. From the moment we arrived on the doorstep to the hugs goodbye at the train station, we felt pampered and appreciated. The hosts are absolutely charming and kind. They went out of their way to make our visit to Hardrian's Wall more than we dreamed.
Our room was huge with beautiful views of the lush gardens from two sides. We slept like babies on the expansive bed with luxury linens. The bath was sparkling clean and up to date with a lovely claw-foot tub, shower and all the amenities we needed.
Breakfast is served in a gorgeous room that overlooks more of the garden. Both food and service were exemplary. Everything was fresh and delicious and served with a smile.
The busses were not running for some reason, so we were a bit perplexed as to how to reach the sites along the wall, but our host kindly dropped us off at the Roman Army Museum the first day and then helped us obtain the service of Melvin's Taxis for the other day. It worked our perfectly and in very short period of time we saw not only the museum but also spent a morning at Vindolanda and an afternoon at Housestead Army Fort.
It was just a quick walk to the nearest pub, the Black Bull, where we enjoyed two dinners in a warm and colorful space.
We are already planning our next stay at the Ashcroft...it will be for more than two nights next time!More
