“Outstanding hospitality”
Reviewed 1 May 2012

We stayed three nights, on a walking trip to Hadrian's Wall, and our group (from Cheshire) had the entire hotel booked. The Manager, Christine (who also cooks) was exceptionally friendly and hospitable. Our half-board rate was good value.

The restaurant food was very good, with a wide choice of meat dishes plus one vegetarian option for dinner, and plentiful; and service (considering the size of our party) excellent. Breakfast was a feast, with pretty well everything you could ask for. There were no draught beers, but a selection of bottled ones and a reasonable wine list (the Black Bull pub below the market place has some great ales on tap if you are really thirsty). Haltwhistle also has a couple of supermarkets, a pharmacy and a visitor centre, and the hotel is within walking distance of the railway station.

Our room (2) was very spacious, though the bathroom was a little tired. Others in our party felt that their rooms (particularly those in the annex behind the hotel) were rather small, but everything was clean, and the towels fluffy and changed every day.

The parking area is rather cramped to drive in and out of, if you have a large car.

Room Tip: Room 2 (ours) is very spacious, but on the main street at the front. It has a spa bath but no separ...

My partner and I booked the hotel for my 50th birthday, two nights, saturday sunday. This is the second time we've stayed and it never disapoints from the rooms, the food and the real angel of the north , Christine !, she even baked fresh bread in the shape of the number 50 for our evening meal. The food is excellent and the breakfast choice amazing. The rooms are like mini apartments, lovely to come back to after a day on Hadrians wall. We'll be back again but wont leave it till my 51st.

We booked on a deal 3 nights for the price of 2 and thought it good value for money. The food was excellent although we had to restrict ourselves to just 2 out of 3 courses as the portions were so generous. The staff especially Christine were very pleasant and helpful.
True Haltwhistle has perhaps seen better days but it certainly didn't detract from our enjoyment of the area. The people were all very frendly and only too eager to put you on the right road if asked when visiting the Burn and upwards and onwards to Hadrian'is Wall. A walk by the river after crossing over the railway bridge is also very picturesque and well worth a visit.
We were so lucky with the weather which of course added immensely to our enjoyment of our short but enjoyable stay.
A short walk from the back of the hotel is a Sainsbury's so sandwiches , drinks etc can be purchased for a day out.

Room Tip: We had room 6 (in the annexe) just a few steps away from the main hotel. Although the car park is s...

My husband and I got a great air fare to Manchester and were able to pop over for a few days' visit. We were booked into Suite A which I believe is in the annex, just a few steps from the hotel's main entrance. It was like having our own apartment, with a separate lounge, spacious bedroom and modern en suite. We live in Washington DC and enjoyed having our own view of the market square - great for people watching!

The hotel was our base for an all-too-short visit in which we managed to see the Lakes, Newcastle, Vindolanda, Jedburgh and Durham Cathedral. So we came back exhausted at night, had a delicious meal and slept like babies. The breakfasts were also delicious, and on our last morning Christine even made a big batch of American pancakes for us. Suffice it to say we're checking the airfare sales and looking forward to our next visit. It's my home away from home.

Room Tip: Suite A is wonderful; we also looked in on suites B and C and they too looked clean and attractive.

This hotel is a wonderful place to stop over. Staff (especially Christine) could not have been more accommodating. I arrived from North of Scotland early ( 9 am) and was told that my room was ready, pleasant surprise after being up so early that morning. My partner had business in the area so I enjoyed my stay in Room 9, in the courtyard, which had my own personal sauna. I had a very relaxing day in this nice peaceful area. As you are at the back of hotel there is hardly any noise. We had dinner that night and it was absolutely fantastic. The service was impeccable. The portions certainly justified the price, I did overindulge. Our sleep that night was in the most comfortable bed and we awoke nice and refreshed. Breakfast was also a delight. Christine does not joke when she says that lunch that day would not be required! I have to say the room was very clean not as some recent reviews have stated. All in all it was a lovely stay in an historice building. I love these sort of quirky places. Would definitely stay again, if down in that area.

Room Tip: Rooms 6 - 9 are chalet type studios at the back. Although this is beside the small carpark you are n...

We booked hotel in order to visit hadrians wall.We arrived at Haltwhistle and soon realised it was a run down part of the area.We collected or room key and were taken down the grotty main street and taken up some stairs to a room above the launderette.Or was freezing cold (the excuse being they had just painted!?).Dirty torn carpet and no telephone to contact reception.Or of date milk,TV and lamp not working. We let and made other arrangements.

I needed a good hotel near to the Wall for 2 adults and we booked a twin room at The Centre of Britain Hotel, having seen favourable reviews on Tripadvisor. We had room 6 in the courtyard, a very comfortable room in all respects, warm with a hot shower, good facilities including secure parking. We are both veggy and Christine and the staff immediately made us feel very welcome and did all they could to make our stay enjoyable. You really do get good service and the tariffs represent genuine value for money, in an interesting and historic building. The standard of all the meals is very high.
This is the third time that I have stayed in the vicinity of the Wall and I'm sure that I will revisit this hotel in the future.
