“Filled Yorkshire Puddings : excellent!”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

We made a late decision to eat here based on the menu boards outside. Inside we found updated menus with higher prices, BUT luckily we decided to go ahead. We ate in the bar. All 3 of us had Yorkshire Pudding : 2 filled with sausages (3) and the other filled with loads of Roast Beef ; all accompanied by loads of mash and we had a selection of fresh veg to share too. The meals were superb - as was the local Askrigg (Yorkshire Dales Brewing Co) beers (Ale & Bitter).
We were warned that there would be a wait as a large luncheon club party had just ordered, but we still got our meals in 25 mins.
Other reviews on here describe the landlady as grumpy / stern, but we found her really friendly and chatty : she just seemed another example of a bluff Yorkshire type, which should not be confused with being unfriendly.
Recommended : food, beer AND landlady!

“Good Food”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

We went with an open mind after reading some of the reviews. we went along to book a table an hour before we required it as advised from other reviews.. very stern landlady even though we were very friendly and polite! just about managed to say they could fit us in.
When we arrived back, we weren't greeted in any way, we hovered by the bar and she looked up and said your on table 13 through there, couldn't at first find the table as the number was covered by the menu.
The atmosphere was very dead, now I don't expect magician or dances just a smile from the staff.
The food was lovely and presented well.
Please up your game, you have it all on a plate, lovely part of the country but people won't return if you're not friendly.

“Didn't actually make it into the restaurant”
Reviewed 15 May 2014

We had planned to have dinner at the White Rose a couple of days ago. We went in to book and have a drink in the afternoon. We were so put off by the attitude of the landlady that we decided to go elsewhere to eat. She actually said to us "I can only do one thing at once"!!!

Afraid I can't comment on the quality of the food. There is no way we would ever go back.

“Lovely Dining Room, but Unappetizing Food”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

We stayed at a wonderful B&B in Askrigg and ate our evening meals at all three of the pubs in the village. The White Rose has the nicest dining room of them all with a view over the garden. We didn't try the chef's specials of the day but ordered from the regular menu. The food seemed as if it had been pre-prepared and warmed up and did not have much flavor. The standard medley of vegetables showed how little thought had been given to their preparation and looked very unappetizing. I'm afraid that the meal did not live up to the surroundings. Perhaps the chef's specials would have been more flavorsome. Be sure to book ahead if you are going to have dinner and be prepared for some brusque treatment from the lady owner.
