Went for mid week evening meal, so not as busy as some of the Sunday lunch comments. Staff were very pleasant and friendly and the food was excellent - will definitely go again next time we are in the area.

was i really in the same pub as mindboggler as the lady behind the bar couldnt have been more helpful. With the wonderful range of real ales available , she offered samples so we could choose the one we liked . All this on a sunday lunch when it was very busy. We were dining with friends who joined us a little later , they too were treated with courtesy and a smile. We ordered the food at the bar and were served by a lovely chap and ehjoyed a lovely meal . i would highly recommend the crown for the excellent food and wonderful service.

And the winner of this year's worst welcome and least bothered bar person goes to the dreadful, cold, monosyllabic (if you're lucky) character on duty this Sunday. This was a pity because the roast beef lunch was obviously home-cooked, ample and good value, served a by a very pleasant young man with humour and courtesy. But dominating the whole experience was the ghastly presence behind the bar, bored stiff, standing with arms folded or with hands in pockets of jeans. The final straw came when a severely handicapped lady clearly required help with the doors to the loo. Although there were no customers to serve and clearly nothing to do, the spectre just gazed vacantly into space completely indifferent to the lady's needs. Fortunately I and another lady customer were able to assist, but one wonders how on earth anyone would employ such an awful person. We can only assume it must come with the building. Otherwise, the pub is perfectly adequate if rather basic and lacking much character. A sign outside says it is dog-friendly but I doubt this applies to the dreadful bar person.

This is one pub meal you don't want to miss. The steak pie is legendary my family go for this every time. The menu is varied from sandwiches to full meals, they do a smaller portion for those of you that don't eat too much, never been my problem!, but a good idea nevertheless. The puddings are all homemade and are delicious. They do a special every evening it could be pheasant, trout or something similar and the prices are more than reasonable. Definitely the best value in the dales, put this on your 'must go to list'
