“Lovely Bed & Breakfast in the heart of Askrigg”
Reviewed 29 April 2014

Lisa & Keith are very welcoming and chatty, they both made time to have a chat with us on arrival, which on a Friday evening was busy with other guests checking in at the same time. We had booked the Herriot room, which Keith showed us to - a lovely room with a nice feel to it overlooking the village square. The property has been very tastefully furnished to keep period features, but had a lovely modern en-suite bathroom ( a nice bath is so much better than a shower after a day's walking!). Breakfast was very good - with plenty of choices and good quality ingredients. Lisa & Keith made us very welcome and we will certainly visit again.

Room Tip: The Herriot room with views overlooking the village.

Having read the outstanding Trip Advisor reviews written about Skeldale House we had great expectations. Sadly, overall we were disappointed with our stay.

We realise that we are going against the glowing reviews previously posted but as they say in Yorkshire - "we speak as we find". Please take the following comments as our honest reponse to our genuine experience.

We booked our room by telephone the night before and Keith told us that no deposit was required as it was such a late booking.

We arrived around 15.30 and a lady answered the door and immediately said "Hello, are you for the Farnon room?". She speedily took us up to our room and en route brusquely told us where breakfast was to be served and at what time. Upon reaching the room (which was very cold) she offered to turn the heating on. We were amazed that the room was unheated for our arrival as the weather was poor and cold outside. Once the heating was turned on, I asked her who she was and she replied "I'm Lisa the owner". I then offered my hand and told her our names as she had not asked us up to that point. We made polite conversation with Lisa, asking her about Skeldale House and her business. We found it unusual that Lisa failed to enquire about anything that related to ourselves. For example, have you come far? how was the journey? was this our first visit here? etc...etc... We were trying to put Lisa at her ease instead of her making us at our ease.

At no point was Lisa in any way rude. However, we were truly disappointed with the brusque and impersonal welcome. The way in which a guest is greeted is crucial in setting the tone of the stay. We certainly do not want formality or indeed a red carpet, we simply expect a warm and professional welcome.

The Farnon room is lovely as is the rest of Skeldale House. We previously noted in the Trip Advisor reviews how clean the rooms were. We have to say that we were somewhat disappointed with its lack of detailed cleanliness. When we walked in the room the first impression was excellent but looking closer we found that there were cobwebs above the central light and on two walls. Also, the window ledges, frames and struts were dirty and needed attention. Our expectations were high, we felt disappointed with the detailed standard of the room. Please don't forget that Skeldale House charge at the higher end for B&B. For this premium rate we should expect a premium service.

Our preference is for a firm bed mattress. Unfortunately, the Farnon room sprung bed and mattress were very soft which for some people would be ideal. However, for us it was very uncomfortable. Fortunately, the Farnon room is so big that we were able to put the mattress on to the floor. This gave us the firmer support we personally needed to get a good night's sleep. This is not a criticism in any way, it is simply for other people's information and a reminder to ourselves to ask about the mattress when we book any future accommodation. We must say that the bed linen was faultless, exceptionally clean and felt wonderful to the skin.

We found it wrong that the central heating was timed to go off during the night. Surely, in a premium end B&B it should be down to the guest to determine if they wish to have heating during the night particularly at this time of year! As we said earlier in this review the room was cold without heating and the weather was sufficient to make our breath condensate when breathing outside. Lisa offered us a small fan heater to supplement the heating which was inadequate for the very large room. However, it rattled so much that it kept us awake so we could not use it during the night.

Just after 8.30am we went down to breakfast and entered an empty dining room. We turned down the volume of the music player on the mantlepiece as it was playing quite loudly. As no-one was around we helped ourselves to cereal and juice. Our table top was sticky, which we wiped. There was a wait after which a man came out of the kitchen and simply said "Hello". We had to ask who he was, he told us that he was Keith, Lisa's husband. Once again we were disappointed by the warmth of the greeting and welcome provided. A simple introduction and handshake would not go amiss.

The breakfast was lovely and well worth having.

My husband had need to urgently use the ground floor toilet. He was frustrated to find that there was utterly no loo paper and no paper hand towels. It was very fortunate that he had sufficient tissues in his pocket! When he next found Lisa he told her of the problem who once again brusquely informed him that the loo had already been re-stocked. Lisa gave no apology for his real inconvenience.

Later that morning, as Lisa was busy Keith checked us out. We offered to provide him with the feedback of our stay - both good and bad. He listened to what we were saying but we came away with the distinct feeling that he didn't truly hear what we said. We do hope that we are wrong in this as the comments we gave were both honest and genuine.

Oddly, we had to remind Keith that we needed to pay for the night's stay - he had clearly forgotten!

Skeldale House B&B is a good business. With a change to the way guests are greeted and treated; and an increased attention to detail it could be a great business. Lisa told us that Skeldale House is to be awarded a Michelin rating for B&B, we are delighted for Keith and Lisa but suggest that their game needs to be raised to live up to this new status.

Keith and Lisa, we wish you all the very best for the future and hope that you take our comments on board without taking them as personal criticism.

It has taken me a while to decide how to respond to this review but on reflection, as it started with the great Yorkshire saying "We speak as we find", I would like to end with one "There is always one!"

Our 2 night stay at Skeldale house was excellent, we stayed here to be close to a wedding at nearby Bainbridge. We don't normally stay at B&Bs preferring hotels, but Skeldale House was way above our expectations and previous experiences.
Lisa and Keith strike a perfect balance and the gorgeous house is more like a good hotel than a B&B with the advantage that they are both very welcoming, friendly and helpful. On arrival on the Friday we asked about a taxi for the Saturday wedding, being in the moors of Wensleydale, Lisa said there was very little chance of booking one and immediately offered to give us a lift, the following day as requested, Keith was outside the door ready to take us to Bainbridge - Many thanks Keith.
The village of Askrigg and the surrounding area is beautiful, and well worth a visit
As for the Skeldale House breakfasts, the full Yorkshires were gorgeous with plenty of alternatives.
Many thanks Lisa and Keith for a lovely weekend.

Room Tip: The Herriot room 1st floor is beautiful with good views of the village

We have just stayed at Skeldale House - sadly only for one night. We will know better next time and book for longer. We had the Darowby Room which was lovely.Great to have enough room for a big bed and a sofa , we always love to have somewhere other than the bed to sit. We were way too early to check in as I had thought it was 2pm check in however Lisa very kindly let us in.
A really stylish room, lovely breakfast and great hosts this is somewhere to recommend.
We ate at the King's Arms in the evening and had a light snack at the Crown In at lunch time. Both had roaring fires. The King's Arms is a great place to let the time slip by!

We are very much looking forward to another visit to Skeldale House.

Room Tip: Try the stylish Darrowby Room.

Wanted to stay here as I'm a fan of All Creatures Great and Small and this is the house featured in the programme. We had the Farnon Room right at the top of this beautiful building. The room was huge, spotlessly clean with lovely views. Very comfy bed too. Breakfast was delicious and set us up for the day. We had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay here. Lisa was so helpful and friendly and gave us a great recommendation for The Kings Arms, we ate there both nights. This pub was also featured in All Creatures Great and Small.

After staying here I totally understand why this place is rated so highly. Thoroughly recommend to anyone visiting this area.

Just had a two night stay at Skeldale House, lovely B & B. We stayed in the Farnon Room with lovely views, so spacious, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was lovely with good quality produce. Lisa was extremely helpful and friendly, entire stay was a joy. The Kings Arms was a great pub, went both evenings for steak night and pie night, would recommend, good quality food and reasonably priced.
