“XMAS BREAK AT THE WHITE HART”
Reviewed 18 October 2007

My husband and I stayed here for a 3 night Xmas break in 2004. The overall experience was wonderful. The food was out of this world (rosette rated) and the staff were exceptionally helpful. Sean, the manager, was very friendly and helpful as was Robbie, the assistant manager, who made our stay very enjoyable. I should mention all the staff as they were all very enthusiastic and eager to please. Nothing was too much trouble. Robbie has now left and is running the Holcome at Deddington. Sean is still the manager, which is a good sign that things are tickedy boo. He is aiming to get another rosette, which is justly deserved. We are staying here again this Xmas and cannot wait, when we will stuff ourselves silly with all the luscious food and drink and go for lovely walks. The village of Dorchester on Thames is very pretty and amazingly quiet and the ancient Abbey is well worth a visit. Whilst it is situated on the main road that goes through the village, there is hardly any traffic as the village has been bypassed and so parking is very easy - either right outside or in the car park behind. The White Hart is definitely worth a visit, whether it is for an overnight stay or just a meal in the restaurant.

Stayed at the White Hart on business. I have to say, I was very pleased with the hotel overall.
The village of Dorchester is extremely pretty and the hotel is centrally located on the High Street.
A lovely old converted Coaching House, the hotel is tastefully decorated with lots of exposed beams, traditional furniture, uneven floors and winding little corridors.
Reception is nice and welcoming and the staff were friendly and helpful.
I was allocated a suite - the Abingdon. A lovely room at the top of the hotel (although access is up a steep staircase). A nice sized lounge with widescreen TV (just terrestrial channels) and sofas (not terribly comfy but do the job). There's a walk-in wardrobe, a good sized bathroom with nice shower and lovely bedroom (twin beds pushed together).
The bathroom blind was a bit dodgy and the loo had a very loud flush! But otherwise, no complaints about the room at all. It was cosy, clean and the bed was comfortable.
There is internet access available for guests in a small room just off reception, however it's quite an old computer and wasn't working during my stay, unfortunately.

The food was excellent. The restaurant is stylish and the food has won 2 AA Rosettes - and I could tell why! Lovely menu, lots of choice and it was delicious. Breakfast was also good. A nice range of cooked breakfast was available, including kippers, porrige and traditional fayre. Bit lacking on fruit, but generally, very good.

Overall, a very nice place to stay if you're in the picturesque upper Thames area - I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

  • Liked — The lovely old building and the great food.
  • Disliked — Room furniture was a bit uncomfortable for lounging around.

We won a weekend at this hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Dorchester-on-Thames is a very picturesque village and the hotel is located in the centre, a minute away from the Abbey.
We were a little disappointed with our room, as having been promised an executive room, we were allocated a standard room and were never offered an explanation as to why the room had been changed. That said, we had excellent service throughout our visit and the food (which has won awards) was excellent - we have found that on several occasions, the food in 3-star Best Western hotels has exceeded expectations and that the kitchens punch above their weight.

We have just returned from several weeks touring the Continent and England, spending two nights at the 'White Hart' whilst in Oxfordshire.
Dorchester is a charming little Village close to the Thames and is a handy base to tour the Cotswolds. We found the White Hart to be excellent value for money. The rooms were quite large and comfortable and ensuite facilities above average and more than adequate. The Bar and lounge areas were a delight with a roaring log fire providing a homely feel.
Being the middle of Winter the Hotel was relatively lightly booked and the staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. In this regard we must mention the assistance given us by the Manager Mr. Sean Harris. Sean treated us with charm and respect and we found him to be a personable individual with a willingness to assist with any request at all times. It is felt that the criticism of him in an earlier review is misleading and quite unfair. We feel that this particular review has been on Trip Advisor too long and should be removed in the interest of fairness to Mr. Harris. We would have no hesitation in returning to the White Hart in the future and look forward to doing so.

Pleasant hotel in a very pretty river-side village. Booked last minute for one night of a bank holiday weekend and was pleased to find a large, beamed bedroom with enormous bed and nice bathroom awaiting us. Staff were friendly (including the manager!) and unintrusive and dinner in the small, attractive restaurant was good enough even though the kitchen was being re-furbished at the time of our visit and only offered a limited menu. Very pleasant and what you would expect of a 3 star hotel, would return again.
