Stayed last night on way home from family break in Devon, we had a family room for myself, wife and daughter, and my mum had her own double room, first impressions were the rooms were huge and furnished a bit like your nan.s house, old worldly, but quaint none the less, good comfy beds and very historical and quirky, we slept well until the adjacent co op started getting its deliveries from 6am, the lady in the co op is a bit loud with her morning greetings its seems, but that didn't bother us too much, all in all we slept fairly well, the only thing i didnt like was to be asked to pay for the room as soon as we arrived??we dined in the pub area the night before and the food we enjoyed, including belly pork, shank of lamb, home made steak and kidney pie, was cooked and presented with expertise, it was the best meal we had on our entire holiday.
The breakfast was enormous and included locally sourced ingredients, it was the biggest and best breakfast I have ever had. If you are passing on the a303, take a detour and enjoy the food or indeed the stay at this pub, it's well worth it

Lovely friendly staff and great food - steak cooked as ordered, lovely chips and dauphinoise potatoes, great location in very pretty village, happy evening family meal out, thank you, desserts sounded tempting but we really had no room!

This is our new favourite place to stop and eat when travelling from Cornwall up to London. Just a short detour off the A303, its absolutely perfect for a restful break.

The food is absolutely fantastic, with a lovely menu to chose from and daily specials. The food is al lvery fresh and very well prepared. And if it happens to be on the menu when you visit, you have to try the raspberry & lemon charlotte, its amazing.

Its so easy to find, there is plenty of parking and the outdoor area catches the sun perfectly in the evening.

The staff are very friendly, welcoming and attentive and there is none of that ' stranger stare' when you walk in to what is obviously a very popuplar locals pub. Us strangers who pop in every now and then are made to feel just as welcome.

I would definately recommend here to eat, it breaks up our long journey nicely and we will definately be calling this our place of choice everytime we're passing.

Have just returned from a one night stay at The George, received a warm welcome, and were given the family room instead of the double we had booked so we did not have a room over the bar which would have been noisier.

The room was very comfortable, and the facilities good.

However, the meal we had on arrival was fantastic, hearty portions and beautifully cooked tasty fare, my only complaint would be that I couldn't eat all of my pudding! It was only surpassed by the cooked breakfast, which was the best we have had anywhere.

We will definitely return next time we are down that way.

We were visiting friends in the area and staying nearby. We ate at the George
three times during our stay and had everything from a sandwich to a Tourndeos Rossini . Couldn't fault the quality or value of what we had.
it's not a posh gastro pub and doesn't pretend to be.
What you get is good food and an excellent warm welcome from the staff.
A good bonus is that dogs are made very welcome.

I stayed at The George Inn from the 27th - 29th of May 2014 with my son and daughter .
1st let me say we had a very warm welcome from the owners Pat & Jan , our room was clean with a good amount of space , the beds were very clean but a bit shaky , secondly the hot water took around 4-5 mins to get hot for a shower but apart from that we had a great stay .
Breakfast was 1st class ! Hot and very tasty . We had dinner on our 2nd evening we had a very nice meal , the only let down is that our dinner was cold when it got to the table .
A beautiful place to stay and I highly recommend The George Inn .

Stopped for late lunch, childrens menu offered home made chips, straight from the frezzer, sausages, cheap mush just about cooked and beans. Yuck all for £5.00. My meal was chewy steak over cooked, nuked potatoes(cold in places) mushrooms cooked in butter, greasy, tomato cut in half and heated on one side, side salad covered in dressing and un washed leafs.... refused to eat it or pay for such discussing food. The cook (warmer upper) left as soon as served, no time it seems gor cleaning.

Response:
Thank you for taking the time and effort to type a review, we always welcome feedback no matter how negative; however I would like to respond to some of the issues you have raised.
I will take them in the order in which you raised them:
we do not offer homemade chips on any of our menus. We have an excellent reputation for the chips that we serve and this is the first complaint that we've had in the 2½ years that we have been running our business at the George Inn, Mere: however tastes are subjective and we can’t expect to please everyone all the time.
Our sausages on the, Younger Persons’ Menu, are indeed of a lesser quality that those we serve on our breakfast menu and in our made-to-order baguettes: however they are supplied by the same local butcher (Wincanton) that we buy the majority of our meat from (we buy the gammon that we cook for ham; bacon and eggs from the butcher in the village, a stone’s throw from the pub), but we rarely have visits from under 14 year old, food critics.
By “cheap mush” I assume you are referring to the mashed potato that you daughter’s sausages were served with? Our mash potato is homemade and due to the exceptionally wet winter, the Maris Piper potatoes that we use (again supplied by a local greengrocer) have been affected to point where they are difficult to prepare due to the problems of drying the potatoes after they have been pulled from the ground. That said, if there was a problem with the production, I will address theses with our Head Chef when she returns from her days off tomorrow (Friday).
As I understand it, you ordered your steak, medium well to well done: it is possible that the Chef may not have left the steak long enough to stage (relax) after cooking prior to serving. This might have been due to the Chef wanting to save my wage bill by not going over her hours, and this too, needs to be addressed; however the more a steak is cooked, especially the high quality local beef that we use, does have a tendency to become ‘tough’ if cooked ‘well done’.
The problem with your new potatoes is, I have to agree is unacceptable and does need to be address when the Head Chef returns tomorrow, and for that I apologise sincerely.
Our mushrooms are sautéed in a mixture of oil and butter and, as such, will appear glistening. The standard presentation for a steak garni in the classic French cuisine is: sautéed mushrooms; grilled halved tomato; and a dressed salad of washed baby leaves (again locally sourced, pre-washed, and always, washed again by us) – with vinaigrette, possibly we should have this stated on the menu to allow for customers to make their personal amendments.
You are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but I must say that berating the bar staff and upsetting other customers is, not acceptable. If you had sort out a senior member of our team (our Head Chef in this incidence) the matter could be dealt without resorting to a diatribe in the public domain.
