Butt of Sherry
Ranked #7 of 8 Restaurants in Mere
Description: We were in transit and it was mid-afternoon. On the off-chance we went to this pub-restaurant for a cup of tea and a sandwich. We were greeted warmly, and our request was met immediately with politeness and courtesy. How refreshing that is!

A friend of ours was travelling from London down to Dawlish to see her sister, she suggested that we meet for a meal on her way down. Where do you recommend? she asked. I don't know, I'll look on-line. I told her. Looking at the map the closest her route would take her to us was the town of Mere, in Wiltshire just off the A303. I rang her and told her of a nice looking pub called 'The Butt of Sherry' in Mere. Come off the A303 to a T junction turn right into Mere, on your right you will come across a Car Park, and opposite on the left about 40 meters further down was 'The Butt of Sherry'.
What an absolute 'diamond' of a pub. The outside was impressive for a country town pub in side you went into a small bar come dining room, tell you why in a moment, then through into the snug and yet another bar, there is a beautiful outside dining area, B&B was offered at very good rates. Small bar come...... The small bar area was for customers to bring their dogs providing they were kept under control. Hence ...and Toby came too..... Our friend had a little Jack Russell and we had our Yorkshire Terrier cross, both of whom are very friendly and well behaved.
The landlord was a very cheerful person. Helpful? To the point that nothing was too much trouble for you or you're little friends. The food for a small pub was simply 'divine'. Nothing fancy, just good wholesome food, like 'Gran used to make'. or as the locals say 'proper grub'. The food was tasty and plentiful, you didn't leave wanting more. The locals were very friendly and chatty that's if you are in the mood for banter.
I would thoroughly recommend this country establishment. If you are travelling along the A303 in Wiltshire, come off at Mere and see for your self, you'll not be disappointed. Oh!! and remember to take your little friend.

We were having our car serviced at the garage in Mere. We went for a wander not expecting anything to be open at 8am. We came across the butt of sherry towards the end of this village. The breakfast was fantastic , great value and using local suppliers. The lady who was cooking was knowledgeable about the area and made us very welcome. What a gem of a place to have in your village. We understand it has recently been taken over and hope that people support it. More places like this are needed. Good luck we will definately be back.

We went to the butt of sherry hoping for a meal. We had not been there before and decided to give it a shot. We knew it had recently been taken over so dismissed the previous reviews on that basis. The young landlord was very welcoming and polite, we were served in a timely manner with enthusiasm. We asked if they did food, which they did and roast beef was on the menu for the day (Sunday) perfect. The food was served quickly and cannot be faulted. Locally sourced produce, homemade horseradish, the beef was lovely and tender and the mix of veg was great, Yorkshire Puds to die for and great tasting gravy, nothing wrong with the food here. The pub itself is quaint, and is now being well looked after, although some things take time to fix, the chap running this pub , now been in there for 7 weeks to date now, is doing a very good job of restoring what the previous landlady had clearly ruined for many. Give this pub another shot, you will not be disappointed, but if you are then I would say the problem lies with you and not this lovely little pub. I would also like to add the locals that were in there at the time were also welcoming and friendly.

Such a shame a once lovely village pub has been slowly ruined by the current landlady.Without doubt the landlady is the one of the most odious persons I have had the misfortune to have encountered. Customer service is most definitely at the bottom of her priorities .For instance if you don't like her choice of beer or very poor and limited menu tough go else where. Without doubt the most miserable Drinking/Dining experience I have have had the misfortune to have experienced. No doubt Enterprise Inns are very happy at her attempts to close yet another village pub. Do Enterprise Inns really care about their customers ?
PS I now see that the pub is up for rent maybe Enterprise have finally seen sense by getting rid of the landlady before it has to close because of a lack of customers.
